“Professor,” Harry asked at the end of one of their Patronus lessons, “what does a corporeal Patronus look like?”

“It depends on the wizard,” Remus replied as he broke a bar of chocolate in half and handed one piece to Harry. “Each wizard’s Patronus takes a different form. Although not all wizards can produce one, of course.”

“Can you make one?”

Remus hadn’t made a corporeal Patronus in years. “It’s not always necessary,” he hedged. “Often, a noncorporeal Patronus is all you need.”

“But can you?” Harry asked eagerly.

Well, Remus had never been able to say no to James, so it made sense that he wasn’t able to say no to Harry either. “I can,” he said, and he pulled out his wand and murmured, “Expecto patronum.”

Silver mist erupted from the end of his wand and solidified into the shape of a wolf. Not a werewolf, but it was close enough that Remus had never liked it. Just one more reminder of his condition, as if he could ever forget it.

“Cool,” Harry breathed, sounding awestruck. “Does your Patronus mean something?”

“What do you mean?”

“Do people have different Patronuses for different reasons?”

“There are some who believe that,” Remus replied. “I don’t know that it’s ever been proven, however.”

Harry admired the glowing wolf for another moment. “Well, it makes sense that you have a wolf.”

“Does it?” Remus asked mildly, his heart pounding in his chest. Harry couldn’t… No, surely he didn’t know…

“Yeah,” Harry said, looking up at Remus and smiling. “You’re both cool.”

Remus blinked. For an awful moment, he thought he might cry. “Thank you,” he finally said, and for the first time, he thought that having a wolf as a Patronus might not have been so bad after all.

Even at his angry words, Mrs. Crouch knelt in front of him and put her arms gently around him. 

Mrs. Crouch: We’re going to get you home. I promise.
