Tea Cup Ballet was photographed in 1935 by Australian photographer, Olive Cotton.
“…this picture evolved after I had bought some inexpensive cups and saucers from Woolworths for our studio coffee breaks to replace our rather worn old mugs. The angular handles reminded me of arms akimbo, and that led to the idea of making a photograph to express a dance theme…” Olive Cotton.
Tea Cup Ballet was exhibited in the London Salon of photography in 1935, the first of Cotton’s works to be shown outside Australia.
The photograph was featured on an Australian stamp in 1991 commemorating 150 years of photography.

Visited Defiance Gallery today to see Kyle Murrell’s ‘Always at Every Moment’ painting exhibition. Great to see this almost sold-out suite of new works. Pictured are 1. Afterlight, Landmark, oil on canvas and 2. Sunflower, oil on panel (above) and Thrum, oil on panel. The exhibition closes on Saturday and is highly recommended.

Home’s 14.05.25 exhibition closes this weekend.
The gallery will be open Saturday 2-5pm.
Come along to see Phosphene Dream Machine video work by Jason Gee.
Phosphene Dream Machine is a sensory exploration drawn from processed television white noise and stroboscopic flicker.
Inspired by the original Dreamachine developed by Brion Gysin and Ian Sommerville, the work uses pulsating light to stimulate the optic nerve, activating the brain’s natural rhythms. This neurological interaction gives rise to kaleidoscopic patterns and visual hallucinations.
