Life lately.

I’ve always had a thing for the artistic style of these retro travel-destination posters. I wonder if the style has a name like googie or art-deco. 

Coronavirus Tourism Bureau California-based designer Jennifer Baer has created a set of COVID19-themed posters promoting travel within the home.

The Decline (2020)

Watched a pretty pertinent and timely movie today that almost felt like an indie project. That was probably only because I watched the dubbed edition; the original being shot in French on location in Québec, Canada. 

It’s a pretty slow burn up until the 30ish minute-mark; after which it is nothing but edge-of-your-seat tension/action; and not necessarily the good kind. Not to say it wasn’t enjoyable, but only marginally so. 

The gore. I looked up the movie on iMdB, hoping to find the Parental Advisory section informing me how gruesome or gory this movie is but since it’s fairly new, I was greeted with a blank, informationless page. So let me tell YOU, expect to see a fair amount of blood. Its not a horror flick, nor is it really shot like one; but we’ll call it a slasher-thriller. If you enjoy paranoia mixed with equal parts hysteria, this movie is for you.

Perhaps my favorite segment was the final fight scene, shot in the cabin. Though it may have been longer than necessary, it was wholly satisfying having been in sitting in a twisted knot for the last 40 minutes.

My Rating: LOW RENTAL

Murder Mystery (2019)

To my recollection I’ve never watched the same movie twice in a calendar day; today being the exception. I watched Murder Mystery earlier today not expecting much but liked it enough to watch it with my wife a second time (her first) before bed.

Critics are known to be notoriously harsh graders on the subject of comedy and as soon as they detect the slightest ‘tinge’ of cheap satire, they seemingly pull out their red-ink-dipped-quills (because yes, they’re of high society) and begin scratching their scathing remarks. In the favor of full transparency, I wasn’t much different. I’ve been scrolling past this on my Netflix marquee thinking, “yeah no un-sophisticated comedy for mine eyes. If I want a murder mystery, I’ll hit up Knives Out.” (Which I’ve still yet to see)

I’ve had good and bad experiences with Sandler movies; and I’ve seen my fair share. Come on dude, who catches a fish between his ass-cheeks 3 minutes a movie??? So needless to say, the bar wasn’t set high when I clicked play. 

But I was pleasantly surprised. The movie had my rapt and utter attention just after the introduction of the French detective, a character I thoroughly loved. I was invested; to the tune of $70 billion. After that it was enjoyable plot twist, followed by mild and delightful chicanery. 

My rating: HIGH MATINEE

Also, you’re in a pandemic induced self-isolation, please brighten up your day by watching this hidden gem.
