Buying Australian Flags - What You Should Know
So you've decided to buy an Australian flag. You Google "Australian Flags" and you see a staggering number of flag sites. The prices are all over the map and the descriptions leave you confused and ensure you are making the best choice for your particular situation.
You've come to the right place. In this article, we'll quickly tell you what you need to know to make the best choice and to get a flag you'll be proud to own and proud to fly.
Buying an Australian flag comes down to four main considerations:

Let's first look at the country of manufacture. For most people, this is a cut and dried issue. Australian flags are available from many countries. And, as you may have guessed, China is a huge manufacturer as is Mexico. But for most people, purchasing an Australia flag that was made in another country is downright unpatriotic. If you are looking for the very lowest price, a Chinese-made flag may be the right choice for you. Otherwise, for just a little more money, you can get a flag that is made right here in Australia.
Materials
Next, let's look at materials. The three primary materials used to make flags are cotton, polyester and nylon. Each has specific advantages. And, depending on where you plan to fly your flag, some materials may be more appropriate than others.
Cotton - cotton is a beautiful fabric. It is the preferred choice for flags that will be displayed indoors. Colors can be rich and vibrant. And because of cotton's "body," the flag may have gentle flowing folds that look wonderful in an indoor setting.
Nylon - nylon flags are ideal for outdoor use. Nylon is lightweight and flies easily in slight breezes. It can also be very durable. SolarMax by DuPont is the most popular flag nylon. Other nylons may look the same but are not necessarily as durable or colorfast as SolarMax. Nylon flags will have a slightly translucent appearance which may detract very slightly from their appearance.
Polyester - this one's tricky. Polyester flags can be the cheapest, OR the toughest flags you can buy. How can this be? It all comes down to weight. Usually, if a flag is an inexpensive polyester, it will clearly say "Lightweight, printed polyester". The two keywords "lightweight" and "printed" tell you all you need to know. For indoor display purposes where quality is not important, one of these flags may be fine.
Size
Size is the one area of your purchasing decision that strictly depends on your individual situation. In general, if you are considering a flag for residential display, you will want to choose a 2.5' x 4', 3' x 5' or 4' x 6'. Most flag pole kits that you attach to the wall of your home will take a 2.5' x 4' or 3' x 5'. A 4' x 6' flag will be too large for these poles.
However, if you are raising your flag on a residential in-ground pole, a 4'x 6' may be great. Of course, if you are replacing a flag, it's a good idea to simply measure the one you are replacing and get that size. Indoor flag poles generally take a 3' x 5' flag.
For commercial,in-ground poles, the size of the flag will be dictated by the height of the pole and it's a strength. Flag poles differ in the thickness of the material used in their manufacture and this may affect the maximum size of the flag that is flown from them. Check with your manufacturer. In cases of doubt, nearly all commercial flag poles can take a 3'x 5' or 4' x 6' flag safely.
Price
Price is the last consideration. When buying flags on the web, it's tempting to simply buy the least expensive flag you can find. But this approach is laden with pitfalls. As we described above, the least expensive flags are usually made in countries like China or Mexico. In addition to being made in other countries, these flags may not provide the wear life or colorfastness that you want. Many times you will purchase 3 or more of these low-quality flags to equal the wear life of a well-made flag from Australia.
