Unpopular(?) opinion: Learning about languages is just as much fun as learning to speak languages.

being bilingual is just *knows meaning of word in your language but not the other* *cant explain it* *mental pause* *words that exist only in one language but not the other* *mixing languages mid sentance* *as you get better in one language you get worse in the other* *mental pause* *confusing meanings* *speaking both languages badly*

It gets a little bit easier once you realize you can accomplish things at your own pace and that’s okay

People who practice and post stuff for corrections in their target langauge(s)? Incredible, inspiring, forces of nature, I aspire

Apparently I’ve reached the “maybe I should brush up all my rusty languages” stage of the pandemic.

Honestly my absolute favourite thing as a language learner is when I say something as simple as “hello” or “thank you” to someone in their native language and it makes them smile

It really doesn't matter if you only know three (3) sentences in your target language, that's already three (3) sentences in and it's impressive! Other people don't know how to say those three (3) sentences but you do. Keep going! Learn that fourth (4th) sentence~

To everyone learning a language, who is getting frustrated and impatient and maybe even thinking of quitting: remember how far you have come (not how far you have to go), remember why you started and remember how fantastic the end product will be. Learning a language is difficult and the journey can be long but it is rewarding and it opens so many doors. You are capable of doing this, you can do this… don’t quit now

“The more familiar two people become, the more the language they speak together departs from that of the ordinary, dictionary-defined discourse. Familiarity creates a new language, an in-house language of intimacy that carries reference to the story the two lovers are weaving together and that cannot be readily understood by others.”
— Alain de Botton, On Love (via mesogeios)

I just spent like an hour or something translating a bunch of text and let me tell you translation is simultaneously the worst and the best thing

Unpopular(?) opinion: Languages of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the indigenous languages of the Americas are still very underrepresented in the langblr community.

the most awkward part of learning a language is when you are able to understand a sentence but you have no idea how to make that sentence

“You must constantly reflect on your learning and your lifestyle and reevaluate your choices, schedule, methods, techniques, and materials. You cannot mindlessly follow any path to success in language learning. You can learn from people who have met success, but ultimately you must discover your own path, your own techniques, and your own habits.”

you know what’s really cool about learning a new language is that little by little you start understanding things and it’s not just “ksndlandowodbsla” when you hear someone talking in your target language it’s like “jdksdk-usted-foelfje-puntos-fjsodkspks-esta bien” and soon there won’t be any “jdksodld” it’ll all be smooth.
