This post is very interesting, and I'd like to provide another perspective (respectfully!)

First of all, let me say I absolutely agree with you on the fact that Newt is canonically gay (which you can't really disagree with because that's just a fact). Personally, I can't see him with a woman & I'm a hardcore newtmas shipper!!

I also think it's important for people in the fandom to know that he is canonically gay, because indeed, we shouldn't just ignore his sexuality. It's just as much a part of his character as everything else, so in the sense of talking about his character (in canon), this is something that shouldn't be forgotten. Good of you to point it out and make it known to the fandom!!

What stood out to me in your post was the statement that if Newt was a real person, you wouldn't just ignore his sexuality (which I assume means you wouldn't get involved with him romantically), and therefore your reasoning is that the same principle applies to fanfiction: you shouldn't ignore/change a (gay) character's sexuality, so ships & fanfics should be in line with said sexuality. (Or at least, that's what I think you meant by that comparison?)

You say you are cool with people shipping fictional characters with anyone, but then proceed to say why you think it's not okay (even homophobic) that people ship Newt with female characters. So I don't really get what you're trying to say— is it "totally cool" or is it "disgusting", as you put it?

Personally, I don't think there's any harm in it.

For me, the thing about fanfiction that makes it so amazing, is the freedom to create whatever you want with the characters that you love. Yes, sometimes that means there's some pretty questionable content... some stuff way more morally questionable than gay characters turned straight. But still, does that mean it's inherently wrong to write about it if that's what you want? I've always agreed with the "don't like, don't read" mentality.

Because doesn't it happen the other way around very often? When canonically straight characters are gay in fanfic? Take wolfstar (marauders) for example— in canon, Remus is married to a woman, but in the fandom, everyone ships him with Sirius and Remus is often characterised as gay. If we apply the same principle as before, and look at "real life", this would be wrong. In real life, if someone is married, you wouldn't actively ship them with other people, right? And if a man was married to a woman, you wouldn't say that he's gay, right?

And sure, you could say he's not canonically "straight" just because he's married to a woman, and it's never explicitly mentioned that he only likes women. And ofc JKR is shit and therefore people often disregard the canon relationships/sexualities (and that's valid because fuck her).

The point I'm trying to make is: fanfiction is freedom, and that means for everyone. I feel that because most people on ao3 & tumblr are part of the lgbtq community, the majority of the content consists of queer relationships, often because they lack in canon. So it's only natural that we want to protect the few canonically queer characters & relationships we have.

But we shouldn't let that stand in the way of the creative freedom in fanfiction. Just like we have tons of fanfics where canonically straight characters are queer, canonically queer characters can be straight too. One isn't better than the other (and I'm not saying that's what you said, because I'm sure you didn't mean that!).

So if you get annoyed by the x fem reader fanfics, I'd say: don't interact with them. And if you want to protect Newt's status as a canonically gay character, I'd say: post about it!

Sorry for this massive paragraph (I guess I got carried away...) But it's a really interesting topic and I love discussing different views on this! Also please don't see this as an attack or something— you make a great point, and I get where you're coming from😊

In honour of pride month and me seeing one too many x fem reader fics on this website, I'd like to reiterate something to the Maze runner fandom.

Newt is a gay man.

We get it. Thomas Brodie Sangster was hot as Newt, I don't disagree. But OH MY GOD, personally it really disgusts me how much people ignore his sexuality for the sake of their own desires.

To clarify, I in no way want you guys to stop shipping yourselves/sonas/ocs with fictional characters, I think that's chill and totally cool

But PLEASE, stop ignoring the fact that Newt is a CANON GAY MAN because you want him not to be. This has been getting on my nerves for a while. You can try and walk around the topic all you want, but point blank, you're *kinda* being homophobic here. You're ignoring a character's sexuality and that's not okay.

If Newt was a real person, would you do the same? If Newt somehow existed in real life, and was a gay man (because HE IS A GAY MAN), how would you act? Would you ignore his sexuality?

Idk, I felt the need to talk about this. Its been getting on my nerves.

LET. GAY. CHARACTERS. BE. GAY.

HOT PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO NOT BE INTERESTED IN YOUR GENDER. YOU NEED TO RESPECT THAT, FICTIONAL OR NOT.

THE REST OF THE CHARACTERS WITH AMBIGIOUS SEXUALITIES ARE RIGHT THERE.

In my mind Newt is bad at math— not because he can't understand it, more because it doesn't interest him and therefore he doesn't feel like putting in the effort

Also I imagine Newt deliberately acts like he's bad at math so he can ask Thomas to explain it to him. Thomas (naturally) lights up at the question, and starts explaining the problem with great enthusiasm— not noticing that Newt is staring at him instead of the textbook

Alright I have question for all tmr people.

Is Newt the kind of person to be good or bad at math?

It came to my mind like a week ago and I still can't decide, but I kinda like the idea of him being more literature smart and Thomas being math smart, so they could explain and teach each other stuff they don't understand.

when you just wanted to figure out your shit at this stupid boarding school your parents sent you to and suddenly that cute theatre guy forces you to come to his poetry meetings

Okay but this sparked an idea in my head about his backstory:

Todd had a girl best friend at his old school, his only friend really, and they were so close... Until his friend made a move on him and confessed that she liked him— Todd freaked out at that and panicked (naturally), stammering some vague answer (that wasn't really an answer) before leaving.

He didn't want to turn her down because she was such a wonderful girl and he was awful at saying no. But he didn't want to be in a relationship with her either because he's gay and just didn't like her like that.

The result? Todd avoiding confrontation like the plague until the situation would solve itself. He closed off completely, avoiding her, hoping she'd come around and say it was just a joke.

But she didn't— she just kept trying, because she could not ignore the love she held for him in her heart. Until she realised it was no use, so she stopped. And after a while, the longing ache in her chest didn't burn as hot anymore, and her crush faded to the background. Just like their friendship, which at this point couldn't be called that anymore.

I am of the opinion that Todd didn't really have friends at his old school, but I think it would be really funny if he randomly mentioned/introduced someone from there to the poets and started talking about how they were like best friends meanwhile the poets had no clue this person existed

Their telepathy? (In the book) because they’re twins. Ever heard of Twin Telepathy?

Thomas knowing he has a strong connection to her and not being able to tell why he has this strong urge to protect her even though she can handle herself? He’s the older twin.

Teresa and Thomas both wanting the same goal but going about it in completely different ways and both are desperate for the other to see their side?

Fuck. It would’ve been so much better than “yeah they’re in love” like NO!!!! What about sibling love??? You’re all each other had your whole lives and one would do anything to get their sibling back 😭

Hi guys!!

So bc I've been gone for a while, here's a quick life update— I've graduated!! And I somehow managed to score a 9,1/10 average on my exams which is literally insane... Idk how I did that😭

I also got accepted at uni so I'm studying psychology, starting in September!! So very excited about that

Other than that I'm enjoying my summer break rn and I plan to be more active on here and in the DPS fandom :) I'm also thinking about making this a multifandom blog & just share some crafts and stuff on here, because I've got too many interests to stick to just DPS—

I truly think there's never a complete analysis of this movie. There's always something new to find and talk about, which is just amazing!!

Also overall I love this post, I've never noticed these parallels before!

Details I noticed on my rewatch

These scenes are parallels. We have the poets sitting more or less in the same positions, and Todd where Neil sat, and Charlie and Neil smoking vs Charlie and Todd smoking (hourglass plot save me…). Someone tries to blow the smoke away when they hear someone coming, and the one that comes is Mr Perry/Cameron (who their anger is directed towards. In the first scene, Charlie is angry at Mr Perry, in the second scene, Charlie is angry at Cameron). Charlie just standing there, not doing anything vs Charlie fighting with Cameron and throwing a punch. Todd just standing there not talking (not to Mr Perry, not to the poets) vs Todd talking. The beginning vs the end.

(They also sit like that while in the cave)

The many sexual references. References to boobs, to sex, to virgins, to naked bodies, one that I interpret as a dick reference, and even non sexual scenes like kissing. In a time period such as the 50s where sexuality was pretty conservative, and specially in Welton which was somehow even more conservative and sexless (it was an all-boys school, so no heterosexual sex, and obviously gay sex was forbidden), this many mentions are rare. Sexuality was very restricted, and yet the poets talk about it freely, and so does mr keating. Another way he’s liberating them, just like taking them out of class to teach (taking them out of closed spaces) this sex references are also a way of helping them be free.

The “tradition” banner being visible in this scene (and the clock, and white and black pictures of students I think, reminiscent of Keating’s first lesson)

The term “madman” appears before, Todd didn’t just pull it out of thin air. While they’re in the cave telling stories, they mention a madman.

“the face of a demented madman” -Neil

“and there's a madman on the-” -Cameron

It makes me think than Todd saw Walt Whitman, associated him to poetry, and when thinking of poetry that night at the cave was what first came to him. That’s so cute ngl.

Since we talked about Neil/Todd and Charlie smoking just now, Charlie smokes a lot, Neil smokes since the first scene (it’s only him and Charlie the ones smoking). I’m talking cigarette, not pipe. Neil’s mom is a smoker (one thing he has in common with her, alongside not really having a voice when his dad is concerned. Neil and his mom…), but so is Todd’s! A little similarity with Neil’s parents and Todd’s, quiet smoker mom and dad that does the aggressive talking.

Oh and these scenes right here? Parallels

Can you see in the second picture how there are two gaps? One for Neil and one for Cameron? :)

How do I know these scenes are parallels? Or, well, contrasts? I mean, the positions are the same, and they’re wearing the same coats (you can’t see it in the photos but just trust me). Except one is at night and the other at morning, one is happy and the other isn’t. In one they’re on the right in the other on the left, dark blue and light blue. And in both they’re sneaking out of their rooms.
