Photo

“Vought F4U Corsair, of a U.S. Marine Corps fighter squadron fires a salvo of eight five-inch rockets at a Japanese position in southern Okinawa, circa early June 1945. Photographed from the observer pod of a P-38 Lightning by Marine Corps combat photographer Lieutenant David Douglas Duncan, USMCR. The photo plane, only about 40-50 feet behind the F4U, was knocked out of control by the rocket blast and nearly crashed.”

XB-70 wing folding and landing gear retraction gifs. The Valkyrie's wingtips, each the size of a B-58 Hustler's wing, folded down to take advantage of a principal called Compression Lift, which allowed North American's great white bird to reach Mach 3.
To allow the plane to carry as much fuel and bombs as possible, the main landing gear were designed to rotate, fold and fold again to take up as little space as possible. The sequence took 30 seconds to complete.
