The Darkness
You can distract yourself in the day,
Dance around, and smile.
But in the darkness you’ll never be okay.
The sadness will overcome you by a mile,
You will always revert to the darkness,
No matter how you mask it in the light,
Your soul is a mess,
And fatalism just feels right.
You try to be loud and happy
But deep down you just know
“That is not me.”
Your head hangs low
In the chambers of your mind
You try to rewind
To the times you felt true joy
But the memories are like a toy.
Plastic and fake, inefficient.
So there you sit, watching the darkness
Consume you to a hundred percent.
You must give in,
Rebellion will only prolong it.
You must play along,
Until the darkness is no longer an act.

Trying
“Haha I didn’t even try on that, so it’s fine”.
I don’t try.
Or at least, not anymore, not for years
Not since I figured out I’ll fail anyway
At least this way, the humiliation will be dulled
With that simple statement:
“I didn’t even try”
Well, yes.
If you didn’t try then that wasn’t your real result,
But what if you did?
What if you toiled, studying, working, trying
And still you fail?
What level of mortification would that be?
How terrible would that be?
You would never be able to live that down,
No one would let you.
You would always be stupid.
The one thing you were ever good at would be out of the window.
Remember when you were smart?
You were like a child prodigy.
Remember how proud they were?
You will never feel that again.
That sense of usefulness.
Oh you stupid, stupid girl.
You have no purpose now.
Not like you ever did, anyway.
The mask is off now and people will see you for what you really are:
A waste of space; useless; unnecessary; unwelcome.
Don’t try.
You have no incentive to try.
So just don’t.

Beauty
It is unconventionally attractive.
The beauty of life, it twists and turns,
Never waiting for anyone.
Most love it, some hate it.
But all are attracted to it
Either the absence of it, or the sureness of it,
People will always be drawn to it.
It is unpredictable
Sometimes playing into your hand
Or sometimes turning away from you
Petulantly, sardonically, mockingly
Talking to you, saying
“Not today, the lady of luck is not yours to have”.
And there, you must resign.
For if it is not life’s will,
Then it is not to be.
That is the charm of it; its stubbornness.
Its petulancy will oft bend itself
In the opposite direction of your wishes,
Showing you that you are not in control.
You never will be.
Whenever you think you have outsmarted life,
It will twist and turn, mocking you.
Life attracts all, though many people do not understand its beauty.

And suddenly I look up
And realise the look of blood against my skin
Has never before been so alluring

However, I have burnt for too many years without reaping such rewards.

The streams will cease to flow
The clouds will cease to blow
The winds will cease to fleet
The heart will cease to beat
For all things must die.
