Interviewer: ...Yes he did just that (??? I don’t know what he did, it doesn’t say) but now we’ve dragged him up here where there’s some, should we say, blue skies to look at. We’re on the roof of the broadcasting center, and Mads Mikkelsen this if the first time you’re at Wimbledon [...]. How was that experience?

Mads: It was fantastic! I’ve been watching it ever since I was a child on TV, It’s a whole another pace, there’s a whole another strength in their hits when you’re standing, watching them live, it’s... I think she played really great out there today, Caroline.

Interviewer: There are probably a few people out there, watching, thinking “Why on earth does Mads Mikkelsen suddenly show up at Wimbledon, watching tennis?” Why is that?

Mads: Well it wasn’t planned, I’m over here working in London at the moment, and had a day off. So I called a guy up, to hear how one would get a ticket. And he knew a guy, who knew a guy, and then suddenly I was sitting in Caroline’s box. It was a... It was a very big experience.

Interviewer: And tennis. How deep does that run with you? 

Mads: Well I don’t play an awful lot of tennis myself, but since the Björn Borg days, my generation has been following it. And Wimbledon has always been the best of best, so to be here today is an amazing experience. 

Interviewer: And you’ll be seeing more tennis, in a minute you’ll see another double (match)?

Mads:  Yeah first I’ll watch a bit of a Morris match, and them I’m heading over to see Caroline’s double match, and hopefully clap once more.

Interviewer: We’ve had this little inside joke in the editorial office that both our presenters have kinda long beards, especially Ken Karlsen is starting to grow a beard. We’ve been teasing them that it might come from the hockey playoffs. Is it the same beard Mads Mikkelsen is sporting?

Mads: Yes, I started growing it two years ago, so I hope that she (Caroline) will enter the finals this year, so that I can shave it off.

Interviewer: Or you’ll end up looking like Gandalf.

Mads: That won’t do. Or, I don’t know, there’s a lot of money in that stuff.

Interviewer: Mads, thanks for your time.

What’s with this salt liquorice thing?

Mads Mikkelsen: “We are just brought up with that in Denmark and we are astonished no one else likes it. We bring it everywhere and make everyone puke and look at us as if we are idiots. It’s just something you miss when you’re not home – like your Guinness. No one else understands that – who is going to drink a dead beer besides you guys? It’s an acquired taste.”

What’s your daily workout?

Mads Mikkelsen: “I jump on a racing bike or I box or go out and play tennis. I’m very much into finding a perfect backhand. Sports are my escape. I forget myself when I play tennis. I can easily play for a couple of hours and not notice.”

“I play the character, I am never the character. I’m very fan of coming back home and my kids calling me my real name and not the character’s name. I think people who do it has to see a doctor. But I take my job extremely serious, but it’s also for me about getting into character fast and getting out of him really fast, just like… a lot of good things in life.”
