When you think of traveling through Europe on a budget, chances are you’ve stumbled upon EasyJet. It’s cheap, it’s orange, and it's everywhere. But let’s get real — low-cost doesn’t always mean low-stress. So when I booked a family trip from Paris to Edinburgh, I was curious (and a bit nervous): Would this budget airline make the journey memorable or miserable?
Spoiler: It was smoother than expected — but only because we prepped everything. Here's my experience flying EasyJet and the 9 things you must know before you book.
1. Understand the Fare Types Before You Book
EasyJet isn’t just “cheap.” It’s a choose-your-own-adventure pricing model. You can book a bare-bones Standard fare, or upgrade to FLEXI, which includes extras like a checked bag, large carry-on, fast-track security, and premium seats.
Pro tip? If you’re a regular traveler, skip the FLEXI and just add what you need. We went with the Essentials bundle — it gave us a seat assignment and one 23kg checked bag per person. Cost-effective and stress-free.
2. Choose Your Seats — Especially with Family
Want to sit together? EasyJet doesn’t guarantee it unless you pay for it. You can risk it and check in early (up to 30 days before), but it’s a gamble.
We shelled out €10.99 per person for seat selection. Worth it. We sat together, avoided stress, and enjoyed the short flight without musical chairs at boarding.
3. Bags Matter — A Lot
This is where most people trip up. EasyJet is strict about size and weight. Even your under-seat “personal item” needs to fit within 45 x 36 x 20 cm.
We bought new backpacks tailored to EasyJet’s dimensions. Nobody checked our bags at the gate, but everyone seemed to know the rules. Don’t risk it — the fees for oversized luggage at the airport aren’t pretty.
4. Check In as Soon as You Can
You can check in 30 days before your flight. Do it. We printed our boarding passes before leaving the US, which saved us a headache in Paris.
And bonus: If you're flying during a busy season, EasyJet sometimes allows evening bag drops — a godsend when you’ve got an early flight.
5. Arrive Just on Time for Bag Drop
Unlike chaotic airports that make you guess when to show up, EasyJet tells you exactly when bag drop opens. Usually 2 to 2.5 hours before your flight.
We arrived right on time, breezed through check-in and security at CDG (Paris), and had time to eat, shop, and relax before boarding.
6. Book Early to Save Big
EasyJet fares rise as your travel date approaches. We watched prices climb steadily over the months. Booking about 4-5 months in advance is the sweet spot.
Schedules are released 7-9 months in advance. Set an alert and lock in the deal.
7. But… Expect Schedule Changes
Budget airline = budget flexibility. Be prepared for flight time tweaks or cancellations. If that happens, European law has your back. You may be entitled to a refund, rebooking, or even compensation.
Check your emails regularly after booking, and always have a backup plan.
8. Bring Your Own Everything
There’s no free water. No snacks. No entertainment. We stocked up on food at the airport, filled reusable bottles post-security, and downloaded shows before the flight.
Don’t rely on in-flight options — they’re pricey and limited.
9. If You Fly Often, Look Into easyJet Plus
For £215 a year, easyJet Plus gives you elite-style perks like seat selection, larger carry-ons, fast-track lanes, and priority boarding — without the add-on charges every time.
If you're hopping around Europe frequently, it pays for itself quickly.
Final Thoughts: Was EasyJet Worth It?
Honestly, yes. Our flight was on time, the crew was polite, and we had zero drama. But it’s all about how well you prep. Think of EasyJet like a DIY airline: you pay only for what you need — and it’s up to you to make the experience smooth.
Would I fly them again? 100%. But I’d bring snacks, check in early, and always read the fine print.
