Mukesh Nita Ambani’s Billion-Dollar Home – Antilia in Mumbai A report by Fly Abu Dhabi has valued Antilla at $2 billion and named it the 12th most expensive building in the world. A staff of 600 maintains the property, which is located in South Mumbai. Owned by Reliance Industries’ Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Antilla is deemed the second most expensive residential property in the world after the Buckingham Palace. The 4,00,000 sq. ft. building is located on Altamount Road in South Mumbai. Fact # 1: Antilia is named after a mythical island in the Atlantic Ocean. Fact # 2:  This 570-foot tall skyscraping home for five is built on a 49,000-square-foot plot and consequently has more floor space than the gigantic French Palace of Versailles. Also, there are 9 elevators to take family and guests to their destinations. What’s interesting about Antilla is that no floor is alike, whether in design or even materials used – all at the request of Mukesh’s wife Nita Ambani. Fact # 2: Every whim of the family is catered for. The Ambani home is equipped with a health spa, a salon, a ballroom, a 50-seat movie theatre and multiple swimming pools, yoga and dance studios and ice cream room. Fact # 4: Mukesh Ambani has devoted six floors to his beloved cars which can house 168 cars, including his Rs 5 crore Maybach. He even has his own car service station on 7th floor. Fact # 5: It might be a skyscraper, but Antilia still has a garden. The smartly built mansion’s garden lies in the space that holds the ‘W’-shape beams that support the upper floors. The hanging gardens are not just for show though; the plants are energy-saving devices that absorb sunlight keeping the interior of the house cool. Fact # 6: It reportedly takes a staff of 600 to maintain the world’s most expensive home. But Mukesh Ambani makes sure that his employees are taken care of as well. There’s also an entourage room where security/body guards and other assistants can relax. Fact # 7: It is a 27 story building. Ceilings of several floors at Antilia are double-heighten,thus making its height approximately equal to the height of a standard building of 45 floors. Fact # 8: The mansion has 3 helipads on the roof.

Fashion entrepreneur Kalyani Chawla’s artistic home in New Delhi Kalyani Saha Chawla’s work in fashion has given her razor-sharp insights into the world of style—her love of art, a strong sense of aesthetic. Towards the end of a narrow road in south-west Delhi’s Mehrauli neighbourhood, a pristine, white, double-storeyed structure encloses within it vibrant art, and its even more colourful owner, Kalyani Saha Chawla. Kalyani is a fashion entrepreneur, Luxurista, a luxury consultant, and a lover of art. Growing up in Kolkata, the daughter of an idealistic, passionate, and intense family, she spent her most impressionable years in a rambling, joint-family mansion on Acharya Jagdish Chandra Bose Road. She has memories of black-and-white chequered marble floors, patterned and trellised glass doors, and art everywhere.

Alia Bhatt’s classy home in Mumbai Alia Bhatt is a proud home owner of 4 bhk home. Alia has moved out of the Bhatt residence and has shifted to her apartment along with her sister Shaheen Bhatt in the house designed by Architect Richa Bahl, who also happens to be Alia’s film Shaandar director, Vikas Bahl’s wife. She was very clear about what she didn’t want. “I told Richa I didn’t want it to be too modern. I wanted it to feel a little old, with a New York loft kind of feel. And I didn’t want anything overtly glamorous, like chandeliers, or marble floors.” She purchased the house two years ago, choosing it over two others she had seen, because of its closeness to her parents’ house. “It was really a no-brainer for me,” she says. It helped, perhaps, that Alia’s grandfather is an architect, and her mother, a self-taught interior designer—obviously she’s inherited more than just her mother’s cheekbones. The renovation took around a year and a half, and the space’s four bedrooms were reconfigured to three. Richa fashioned Alia’s dressing room into a separate space to ensure the rest of the house would be private, even if the actress was in the midst of fittings. “You know, when she’s getting ready it’s not just her. There’s the stylist, the make-up artists, the spot boys, the ironing guys… it’s like a mela in there,” says Richa. A lobby now separates that space from the large living room, which has turned out to be a cosy mix of New York loft and Swiss chalet, with white walls, comfortable sofas, concrete-tiled floors and expansive windows. The one thing the sisters insisted on in the home was a “tea bar”, because apparently, they’re both “really into tea. Just totally obsessed,” says Alia.

Hrithik Roshan’s stunning seaside home in Mumbai Around the time that Hrithik Roshan was looking for the perfect blue carpet for his living room, he was also spending his days on the sets of Ashutosh Gowariker’s Mohenjo Daro, in which he plays an indigo farmer. The blue of the sets spilled over to the blues of his home. “While washing the pigment off from my hands one day, I realised that’s the colour I’d been looking for… not cerulean, not turquoise, something in between,” says Roshan. Detailed instructions were despatched to architect Ashiesh Shah, who had the task of commissioning a carpet first to a Turkish company and then to one in Jaipur, until his client was pleased with the results. Roshan has been similarly exacting about every element in the house designed by Shah, which he moved into with his two boys 10 months ago. “Building this home was about discovering myself. I wanted to explore what would manifest on the outside if I went by what I felt inside,” Roshan tells me over coffee and the small eats I’ve been asked to pick from the Roshans’ home menu—a restaurant-style list that he got made for Hrehaan (10) and Hridhaan (8), who’re presently jumping off a perilous pile of floor cushions as a sort of mid-afternoon game. THE BEACH LIFEThe Roshan home is a breezy affair—and it’s not just about the salty air wafting in from the Arabian Sea. In the sprawling den adjoining the living room, where the lives of the three Roshan boys intersect, there’s a foosball table, a billiards table and a vending machine that dispenses chocolates. While it has the actor’s home office with a stack of bound scripts and tomes on moviemaking, it also houses a life-size graffiti by Daku—who Shah calls the Banksy of India—on a whitewashed brick wall where Roshan projects movies on weekends. It is here that I see the lion’s share of the weird and wonderful quotes spread around the house. For instance, a patch of wall near the billiards table has “There are two sides to every story” printed back to front such that it only reads straight in the mirror. These quotes are spread through the house: from Latinate aphorisms to quirky one-liners penned by Roshan himself. If the home is an expression of his inner self, is Hrithik Roshan a funny man? He responds with a generous laugh. “There’s a child in me… I love to be interrupted when I’m thinking. When I think, I tend to walk a lot. So when I’m stuck in a loop, I’ll read something and switch my train of thought. It’s terrific,” he says. The Roshans have one house rule: the family doesn’t have a fixed dining spot, never mind the dining room with the swanky Astrolab glass table by Roche Bobois and an imposing Raza. Instead, a foldable table is set up wherever the children fancy. “Sometimes, we’ll have breakfast right in the middle of the living room or we’ll have it on the terrace or in my bedroom,” says Roshan, adding, “It’s my way of telling my children to think outside the box, to imagine endless possibilities.” FAMILY CORNERThe design and palette of the home is inspired by the sea, and the idea of travel and family. For the larger furniture pieces, Roshan made a couple of expeditions to Dubai, to stores such as Aati, Nautica and THE One. Many others were bought from his former sister-in-law’s eponymous home store, Simone. The accents are all nautical, whether it’s the driftwood-and-acrylic stools from the French brand Bleu Nature, the delicate corals or the wooden sailboat he found in Mauritius. Despite the art and artefacts—a Desmond Lazaro quadriptych, a panel of vintage architectural blueprints among others—it is most visibly a child- and pet-friendly home. The all-white bar in the far corner of the living room might spell ‘bachelor pad’ but taking pride of place right beside it is a moveable grid with family portraits shot by Bharat Sikka. “I love it when people mess the place up,” says Roshan. “A home tied up in rules is not really a home. A home is about people feeling like they can be themselves, relax, kick off their shoes.” I ask about his sweet spot in the house. For Roshan, it isn’t one chair or room, he insists it’s the whole house that calms him down. “That’s what homes are supposed to do—make you feel safe and secure. I trade my comfort and my privacy on sets and locations, so I have this to come back to. Like a bird that gets its little twigs and builds its nest…” he trails off. For someone like Roshan, the home is very much a work in progress. The long entryway needs a runner; the dining room needs another artwork on the wood-finish wall, he tells me. He is only slightly embarrassed that his year of home decorating has led to apps like Better Homes and Gardens magazine and Mansion Homes being permanent fixtures on his iPad. Mohenjo Daro, a movie about rediscovering the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, is scheduled to hit theatres this month. I ask Roshan what he thinks has remained the same when it comes to man and his habitat. “It’s the feeling of being safe,” he says, especially poignant in the light of his personal controversies taking up much newsprint recently. “It’s about building your inner world that is about yourself. Mohenjo Daro is the story of someone discovering his true home, and I filmed it while I was building mine.”

Shahrukh Khan’s sea view home ‘Mannat’ in Mumbai. We are talking about his luxurious mansion ‘Mannat’, which he had bought in 2001 at Bandstand in Mumbai’s Bandra West. ‘Mannat’ means ‘vows to the God’ and it has been the dream of every passer by. Shah Rukh Khan’s Bandra bungalow Mannat is Gauri Khan’s baby. She says it took around four years to get to the point where everything looked just right. The superstar and his entrepreneur wife opened doors of their home for Architectural and the view of insides is just breath taking. SRK and Gauri’s abode Mannat has always been the talk of B’Town. Firmly nestled on the banks of the Arabian sea in Bandra, the mansion boasts of five bedrooms, multiple living areas, a gym, a library and every other thing that a celebrity home comprises of. From the photographs you can see that the interiors are very dramatic. The furniture in the house was bought by Gauri from London and Milan. Everything has Gauri’s personal touch added to it and it is just amazing.

John Abraham’s Arabian sea facing Duplex Penthouse in Mumbai
John Abraham along with his brother Alan Abraham of Abraham John Architects broke the stereotype of a typical celebrity house by building the most serene and luxurious penthouse for the actor in Mumbai. The penthouse, aptly named ‘Villa in the Sky’ is mesmerising to say the least. All 4,000 sq.feet of it.
It was designed with the theme of minimalism being of utmost and it being complimented by rustic hardwood beams and plant life to create a space that looks both modern and aged at the same time.
The highlight of the property on the 7th and 8th floors is undoubtedly the spectacular view of the majestic Arabian sea and it can be noticed how the design was maximised for the view.
This included putting in floor to ceiling windows wherever possible, including the massive new master bedroom. In fact, these sea views are now visible from every room of the house.
To combine the two apartment spaces, all internal walls were taken down and a new staircase, cantilevered off the interior columns, was added to connect the floors.
The design of this luxury penthouse reflects the modern minimalist style of the Architects & the needs of the client.
The open plan concept called for integrating indoor & outdoor spaces, maximising the benefits of the site location (sea side) and the climate.
The hi-tech glass walled media room on top, complete with a large size projector screen, AV & automation, blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors to expand the home’s sense of space: it overlooks the ocean as well as a spacious wooden deck with a skylight & a luxuriant garden terrace.
