Just been alerted to the fact that Reece, Mark & Steve are recording a play written by Jeremy for Radio 4!
SP: It's always been about the friendship between us and that's why I think we're still friends and we're still kind of working together. Not all four of us all the time, but... Jeremy's just written a radio play, actually, and this is an exclusive and myself and Mark and Reece are all going to be in it. So that's nice, yeah CH: Oh wow! When's that coming out? SP: I've no idea. We're going to be recording it some time in the next 3 or 4 weeks. It's on Radio 4. But we just love each other's company, we make each other laugh, and I think there's something about collaboration which has always been at the heart of everything I really enjoy.

Robin Finck in Cirque du Soleil

GG: And so, from the outsider’s perspective, it seems like the Cirque Du Soleil is this magical, beautiful experience of joy, but what is the reality for a person in the band playing those shows?
RF: Well, it was a magical and romantic period for me: all was made new, it was joyful, colorful, playful, it was challenging, and I got to experience the stark contrast of being in a sort of blue-collar environment relative to where I was coming from in the NIN bubble, you know. The band in the Cirque Du Soleil are not the shining stars of the troupe: we’re there to support the downstage acts, and often in the dark, etc.

(...) It even kinda got me a tambourine solo in the show, one that I really didn’t even want! I was upstage in the dark during a rehearsal in the chapiteau, in the Big Top, and it was stage lit, it was dark in the bleachers. Empty bleachers, which is where Franco Dragone was, the director of the show, revered and fabled by the cast, you know? I was pretty sure he didn’t know my name, but we all certainly knew who he was. He had a wireless mic in the grandstand during rehearsals and just the glow of the cherry of his cigarette in the dark. We’d hear his voice through the PA, the god-mic. We were working on some act, and it was mostly dark, stage lit and I guess it was supposed to be quiet. I was kinda clowning around with this tiny little tambourine drum-thing, and I hear – we all hear- the voice of god, and the glowing ember of his cigarette:
‘ROBEEEN?’
And my heart stopped! I thought I’d broken his concentration and he gonna, like, haul me out! And so, he calls me down, center-stage, and the stage is in the round, you know? A circular stage. ‘Center stage please’. I at once had to grapple with the fact that he can see me, knows my name, and now he’s calling me center-stage. Is he going to, like, berate me in front of everybody for breaking his concentration? Or I dunno: I was starting to get a little defensive about this! (laughs) And I was kinda slump-shouldered, walking toward center-stage in the dark and he follows up, he says: ‘bring your little drum’. And so, I turned around, I bring my little drum. ‘Stand center-stage’ and then he says, ‘Okay, let’s do it again.’
GG: Wow! Hahaha!
RF: He liked what I was doing! And it had been now written into the mise-en-scene, that little scene, forever!
GG: Forever! So, does that mean somebody else is doing that nowadays, all these years later?
RF: Yeah, I guess! (laughs) I ended up having to do that ten times a week! Eventually, the tambourine was velcroed to my back for my entrance (laughs). I walked out with a guitar, played a little guitar and then out came the tambourine.

This clip means so much to me. And I haven't seen a post about them yet so let me tell. Trent gave him a helping hand when Clint was starting his career as a film composer after leaving PWEI. Prior to that, Pop Will Eat Itself were signed to Nothing Records and released one album, Dos Dedos Mis Amigos. The band was performing with Nine Inch Nails in Further Down The Spiral Tour and Nights Of Nothing Tour. So here are a few pics of young Clint:

Now Clint Mansell is one of the most famous film composers with such titles as Black Swan, High-Rise and Requiem for a Dream. And about the last one. A Special Thanks block from credits:
Mansell used Nine Inch Nails music in the Man On Fire and credited Reznor as a 'musical consultant' for the Requiem for a Dream. Mansell also remixed You Know What You Are for Doom. In fact, I believe they were close friends. Trent is not someone who easily trusts other people. So either Trent was just really friendly with Clint, or he saw a lot of potential in him. Which eventually turned out to be reality.

It's a pity that Clint is not announced as a participant in the Future Ruins festival this year. Maybe it will be next if the Reznor and Ross's fest is organized again. P.S. Clint and Trent remixed one of the singles of Atticus Ross's "12 Rounds"

In a recent post, I wrote about feeling nostalgic for Russia, where I have lived a few times over the years. I specially wrote about a dive bar in St. Petersburg called Стирка 40.
(Me reveal: that’s me in the bar’s bathroom, in the 6th grid post on this screenshot of my old Instagram. The second to last photo is of a shoehorn, which I found oddly ubiquitous in Russia.)
I had mentioned that at Стирка, I met a girl who would go on to become a close friend. Her name was Anna (Anya). She was a young single mom who always brought her son, Moses, to the bar. He’d sleep in a stroller in the corner. After a while, I began babysitting him. That’s him in the photos. He’s mostly obscured, so I think it should be ok. (There are also several photos of him on the bar’s Facebook page. He’s like a little Easter egg to find!)
I also wrote about how my last memories of St. Petersburg were of taking shots of homemade moonshine in Anna’s apartment before catching my flight. That’s the second photo, with New Order playing on the laptop behind the shot glasses.
These memories are now behind a firewall for me. They are on my old, personal, private Instagram account that I lost the password for years ago. (Apparently I have bad karma with Instagram.)
But I had sent my post to another old friend, and she went into my account which she still follows and sent me a few moments I had mentioned in my post.
(There are many, many memories on there I want to retrieve, and will someday have to endeavor to get them all back.)

I never knew the name of the photographer of this and other iconic PHM photos. But today I learned his name was Jeffrey Silverthorne. He died in 2022.
I looked up his photos and was struck by the parallels between this photo of Trent and another shot he took.
He is also well known for a series of art shots of deceased bodies in morgues. They’re strangely moving, if not a bit difficult to look at. Just thought some of you might be interested to view them or investigate his other work.

And forgive me for the emotional non-sequitur but it occurred to me that in this shot, it looks like Trent is bothering Richard and Chris in a bathroom stall.
