some of yall arent americans so reminder that japanese americans down to one-sixteenth japanese ancestry were rounded up and imprisoned under executive order 9066 (alternatively described in some cases simply as having "one drop of japanese blood") so if we're going to HAVE the conversation about how japanese is japanese enough to be worth recognizing as japanese, there's your fucking answer tbh

i completely agree with everything jason said here. like jill, i'm a mixed white sansei and just because white people don't clock me as japanese doesn't mean i'm not japanese or that it wouldn't be fucking racist to pretend like i'm not. this is nightmarish. i honestly don't have much to say except that i cannot believe we're still having "who is japanese enough" discourse in 2022 and honestly it's ridiculous to say that jill was made japanese purely as a marketing ploy. she's still a japanese character written by and for japanese people, which is actually... wow, maybe that's important or something. maybe it makes her seem more relatable because it represents the heritage of the audience and artists somehow? could representation be an important concept in media?
Honestly what makes it sillier is that it is literally a common trend in Japanese marketing to make the characters partially Japanese so they're more relatable to the home audience. Its why Big Boss in MGS was originally 100% American in the 1st game then in MGS3 they retconned him to be half Japanese.
Jill was only been mentioned as being of Japanese/French descent in the original RE1 (it was a literal hype thing at E3 1995) and it has never come up ever again in the series. Plus, absolutely none of her face models have ever reflected it either.
You shouldn't be bullied because you use a faceclaim that doesn't match it lol, Neither her 2002 faceclaim or her 2019 do either, so??? What's the issue?
TIMES A BILLION.
if i hadn’t read the RE wiki page about her i wouldn’t have even known that she was supposed to be japanese . it’s not mentioned in game like at all ( if i’m wrong please show me!! ) and she doesn’t look japanese . i chose my fc based on her looks and what i wanted for the character .
and what’s more , this is a canon divergent blog !!! it’s my right on my blog to make her whatever race i want. japanese , portuguese , i mean she’s fucking african american in welcome to r.accoon city for goodness sakes .
#ooc#not to mention that actually i would argue the disconnect between japanese nationals and japanese diaspora#is the REASON her race was ignored later on#which makes it doubly valuable to recognize and revisit that aspect of her character

my most self-indulgent hc is that ada has a 1987 boston whaler 170 montauk named anna may that she mods herself. original wood detailing that's her baby. she doesn't use her for high-risk work, but sometimes when she needs a real dependable boat she'll bring her out. mostly though she just goes fishing and puts higher and higher horsepower engines on

𝖈 onsciousness returns slowly, acrimoniously, and all too late. first she sees her shoes – or rather one of them, below the fluttering of her dress. the other one seems to have fallen off and been lost somewhere on the ground far… far below. it’s a good thing she isn’t scared of heights. she grunts softly as she blinks, trying to get her eyes to focus. there, down below, is leon. she’s always had a natural talent for picking him out in a busy scene, and now… it’s apparent from a glance that there’s nothing more she can do for him. what’s left of him isn’t much to look at, anyways, so she averts her eyes. work the problem – no point in getting emotional.
what a headache – literally and figuratively. she doesn’t need to struggle to realize that she’s been tied up; lengths of rope are wound tightly around her waist and wrists, from which she presumes she’s hanging. that’ll leave some bruises. surely she isn’t going to be left up here to die, there would be no use in that, but she isn’t one to wait and let the next big thing find her. while there’s not much a butterfly can do in the spider’s web, she starts to test the range of motion her restraints allow. if she can somehow reach the knife strapped to her leg, or the heel of her shoe… cold wind whips her hair and bites at her skin as she makes deliberate, balanced movements like a strange aerialist, trying not to disturb anyone or anything particularly mutated and irritable.

albert doesn’t consider himself a temperamental man; maintaining a strict air of impassivity at all times is a natural skill that he has honed into something of an art form over the years. ada’s facetious little diatribe only burrows under his skin because he knows that’s what she’s trying to do. and still, he remains stony-faced as ever— though, albert does allow himself the small pettiness of noting, ‘ inappropriately preoccupied with personal appearance ‘ as his next note.
then, ada’s one-woman play comes to a close with her pressing her face against the mirror, and albert’s expression misshapes itself into a snarl. nothing in him can articulate exactly why that flippant display is what sets him off, but it does. he stares at her, eyes boring into the glass, hoping she can feel his contempt. and then, with the suddenness of a light being flicked off, albert relaxes. reassumes his position in his chair, legs crossed neatly— ada isn’t worth his ire, he decides. if she wants to parade herself around like a fool, even if she believes it to be at his expense, that’s her prerogative. all the animosity from just moments before has been drained from his voice entirely when he leans into the microphone once more and says, “ please step away from the glass, miss wong. “
he studies her without the caustic heat of anger coloring his view, and albert determines that, yes, she is not worth hating. ‘ attention-seeking behavior, ‘ is written down as well. “ let me remind you once again— since i suppose it bears repeating— that this is simply a formality, “ he says dryly, “ the theatrics are wholly unnecessary. nobody else is watching you, so if you’re quite finished, we can continue. “ albert gives pause, leaning back in his chair and bringing the microphone with him. the more casual posture makes him feel settled back into his own skin. “ have you calmed yourself enough for the next question, or should i give you more time? “
𝖆 cold, sick feeling slithers down her spine– hard to say if she really does feel the odium he’s directing at her, or if it’s something carried in the posture of the silhouette she can just barely make out. okay, too far. he clearly isn’t amused. ada always forgets until she’s at this point that as fun as it is to annoy wesker, there’s something deeply disquieting about actually pissing him off. it makes her feel like she needs to kill something.
not that she’d let it show; she refuses to recoil, as much as every instinct tells her to. her heart racing, she lets her hands fall to her sides and takes two steps back when instructed – she plays it like she’s just doing as she’s told, like she isn’t glad for the excuse to put that extra space between herself and the violence he was radiating just moments ago. maybe it’s best to respect the fourth wall. she does, however, break the cardinal rule of the performance by turning her back to him, cutting herself off. a necessary moment of concealment so she can find her character again.
she uses it as an opportunity to pace back to her primary set prop, ensuring her body language remains languid and confident, before turning once again downstage and pulling herself up to sit on the table. like him, she reached her boiling point in a flash, and it dissipates just as fast. “ well, how am i supposed to know who’s watching if i don’t break curtain a little? fine, fine. ” a slow, dramatic inhale is followed by a slower and more dramatic exhale, and then she takes a shuddering breath as if coming down from a bout of hysterics– which she’s sure he’ll claim she had. a brief performance of recovery satirizes the real emotional one-eighty she just made, then: “ alright, i’m ready. "

waugh veronica got me thinking about ye olde compare and contrast with ada and krauser. any krauser fans out there correct me if i'm wrong  but ummm i'm thinking about (gesticulates dramatically) very similar plots and roles but vastly different Paths, wherein i would describe krauser's narrative as driven by power, and ada's as driven by the self. eg krauser chooses the path of power by infecting himself, chases power, and is ultimately driven mad by power; while ada is never infected in any game she appears in and her primary obstacles and conflicts with others come from her refusal to compromise her self by abiding by others' rules or, like, being loyal to any cause. which is the same essential conflict that permeates a lot of the villains of resident evil because of how it's reflected in infection; bows are given near-unlimited power at the expense of the self.
it reminds me of the central plot & diverging paths of sundered which is one of my favorite games ever by my favorite developer, wherein throughout the game you're given a series of choices between utilizing and destroying sources of power; if you utilize them (the "embrace" path) you gain really useful powers while being incrementally corrupted, and if you destroy them (the "resist" path) the game is significantly harder. while it is established that corruption is the wrong thing to do, there's no immediate or apparent material consequences and it literally fucking rules and makes the game easier, and only at the very end is it revealed that you have completely lost yourself via a boss fight with your own abandoned humanity and the realization that all you can do upon winning is spread the darkness in you throughout the world.
basically i can't say anything as well as wesker put it when he said "sure i'm not human anymore, but just look at the power i've gained" and krauser basically represents that "embrace" trajectory within re4. and ada is the true polar opposite of that, which is not necessarily the Forces Of Good, but essential humanity and the foresight to do things the hard way rather than accepting power and its inevitable cost. also i love sundered

It's possible that I'm underestimating Saddler. But in all honesty, he doesn't take up much space in my mind. His motives and behaviors are reliable, and I appreciate him in that way. I can consistently expect him to play his part. Still, I shouldn't get too comfortable. He may have a few tricks up his sleeve yet.

Some days it's hard to leave him. Sometimes I look in his eyes and think about how precisely I can read him, in the ways that matter. And this fear rises in my chest when I imagine that he can read me too. Still, I'm leaning in. It's exhiliarating, I'll admit. The way he trusts me feels like holding a baby; something so fragile and important. It isn't foolish, either. He's never been an idiot. I respect the active choice he makes, and I'll prove him right in making it.

Surely, he knows that he deserves more credit than he gets.
Tough. This is intelligence. Nobody gets into the game to see their name in lights. Of course, despite his resignation to a life of obscurity, he's still quite the romantic. The world is grand and terrible in his mind, which makes it easy to guide him from the shadows as long as I present him with an epic narrative. So I know I never have to worry about his various entanglements in my business. Like I told Wesker, he isn't a concern.

Unfortunately for us both, Wesker's interest got in the way of my purpose, and I couldn’t allow Umbrella to develop las plagas. I understand the consequences of that decision. I've gone up against him once before, and it isn't an experience I'm excited to repeat. Undeniably clever, it's quite likely that he will spare little expense in tracking me down and extracting the location of the Dominant-species sample from me. When it becomes clear he can’t get it back, he will kill me. That is, if he does find me. I will use every tool he's given me to ensure that never happens. There are times I'm bold enough to think that he and I are equally matched... in the type of game we like to play, not physically. Having received a few messages from him since my little European vacation, it’s entirely possible the chase hasn’t begun yet, but it’s a time bomb I can’t see the countdown on. He may well be trying to lure me into a false sense of security. I need to be more vigilant than ever.
