it's not 100% in response to the misogynistic thing but it was definitely on my mind (and I didn't know about the lesbian cop trope! just from the sound of it I can see why people won't like it)

no, but Caitlyn's arc in s1 seemed to be going towards realizing how corrupt the enforcers are and being disillusioned with Piltover, which I think would be relatable for many people. I think lots of people would relate to wanting to help but realizing the way they're doing it is actually the exact opposite. The problem is that it got completely derailed in s2 and never hit the landing, because this is still the League of Legends show and she Has To Be The Sheriff. At least Jayce's similar arc about realizing how shitty the council is ended with him saying "I don't give a shit about the council." And then he fell into a ravine so there weren't many chances to contradict it. Anyway, both Cait and Vi got fucked over in s2

Also as an east asian I just get disappointed with east asian cops lmao. If there was a plaque of the model minority in some government office, it would have a picture of an east asian cop.

(why are all of the prominent cops in Arcane POC? The more you think about Arcane the more you realize that it's a good show at first experience but it completely falls apart the more you try to analyze it. At least half the reason why the fandom is so insufferable is because of the ways the writing is messy imo)

South of Midnight is a great game and its traversal skills are so generic it's actually making me wonder if it comes with the engine. Every time they show me a new mechanic I'm like "yes, I have played FFVII Rebirth and/or Star Wars: Jedi Survivor." They're all on Unreal Engine. Does that engine genuinely just come with double jump, wall run, and grappling hook?

The upside to this is that, in all ways but story-wise, I have already played this game, so there is no learning curve. None of the chase sequences or platforming challenges are difficult because I did the fucking Jedi Survivor platforming challenges.

the downside is that I don't think it fits thematically with the story, but props for them for trying. And, hey, it's an indie game. If it comes with the engine, you might as well take it

long ramble ahead:

lots of people in the jayvik fandom are latino and/or physically disabled, which is interesting because by this metric I should be really into caitvi. I mean, I like it, i'm east asian, caitlyn's... kind of east asian. the thing is, Caitlyn's a rich asian who loves shooting and Viktor and Jayce are low to middle-class engineers who feel like they don't fit in* and have a foolhardy desire to make the world a better place. I think I actually grew up in a financially better place than Jayce in s1 act 1**, but I'm certainly not rich, and I can relate to being an engineer with a foolhardy desire to make the world a better place. It does make sense that the ability to relate on a personal level is more important than just looking like someone. Most disabled people would be able to relate to Viktor on experience and feelings, not just appearance, and I've rambled about the Jayce immigrant narrative in the footnotes. It never felt like Caitlyn didn't fit in Piltover, more like she didn't fit her parents' expectations. Like, she had a role that fit in her society, and she didn't like it and wanted to break out of it, but she had that role and no one would look twice at her for it. She had to prove her competence, but not her right to be here at all***

You know what 'looking like someone' affects for me, though? How I feel about violence towards those characters. Was barely moved re: Viktor's death(s). Quite liked seeing Jayce suffer in the ravine because I like angst and torturing my blorbos. Every time I see an East Asian die in fiction I hate it. Even if it's a random extra. idk.

(I'm a profoundly boring only child who grew up middle class, I can't relate to Vi at all in any way. She's my second favourite character. I would die for her.)

Viktor being from Zaun and going to live in Piltover (even though in the show it's likely seen by Piltover as moving from the slums to the fancy part of town), his accent. Jayce's whole journey through a snowstorm as a child. Jayce's entire s1 arc has a very 'person seeking better future goes to America, becomes successful, gets corrupted by politics, realizes the American dream is a lie' vibe.

** Jayce is not rich (before hextech). if you think Jayce grew up rich you need to re-watch the show and actually pay attention this time. This man grew up middle class at best. Also he has supplementary information where he said he only can afford his studies through a scholarship and the sponsorship ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
