This past weekend I had my sixth and final interview on the different topics that I mentioned in my research paper. Last week was the most stressful for me because I did three interviews with four different people. Four because one of the three interviews had two people simultaneously which made it even more meaningful. This individual was appointed by an executive that runs the Bobby Benson Center of Hawaii. This individual works with our youth that have had substance abuse in their lives and works to help each student/patient to heal. It was nice to have a conversation about how he and the company worked through the pandemic and even how they do things to not just help kids, but also the community that they are in. 

What is happening this week:

This week is crunch week. Editing all my videos and writing individuals scripts on what I like from each interview. Working on sending them out for review before posting on my website.

Hiccups/Hurdles/AHA moments

The biggest Hiccup was doing all three interviews last week. It brought a rollercoaster of anxiety about getting everything that I wanted to ask for. Leading up to one of the interviews, I never got a cancellation until the very time the interview was to start. That individual however did send the answers to the question I had prepped ahead of time. I was stressing about what to do with just the answer to the questions. I reached a professor to see how to work through this. Thank you Jeff for helping me work through this hurdle.

At 8 o'clock tonight, I did an interview with an individual that works closely with the homeless community. She works as a case manager at Ohana Ola located here on the Waianae coast. She's been working with Ohana Ola over 2 years. It was amazing to be able talk to her about her experience and what she's done for the homeless community.

Yesterday, April 5th 2022, I did a double interview with these two individuals. Ella is the woman in brown and Genia is in green. Each individual has oversees different programs within DVAC. Ella works with mostly Native Hawaiian Programs, families, and individuals. Ella has worked with DVAC for over 5 years. 

Genia works with a hand full of groups. Genia works with the LGBTQIA community, Multicultural support groups (Micronesian/Korean/Tongan/Japanese/Filipino), and even a youth program that starts at the age of 12 called Tap808. 

Their experiences in careers and also personal made this interview hit close to home. We laughed, we cried, and even got down and personal with how we came to this meeting.

Coming up this Week 4/3 to 4/8

I am editing all my videos and recording some of my parts. This Tuesday I have a meeting with two amazing individuals from DVAC of Hawaii. One of the individuals works with a large group of Native Hawaiians. She will be answering a few questions for me on what she does for DVAC. Her coworker/ colleague works with the LGBTQIA community. Both communities are very largely affected and I figured that showcasing both individuals with their different professions is very important. 

I am having issues with getting someone to talk to me from an organization that works with youth and substance abuse. I have tried three places that I looked into and they all are recommending that I go work with Bobby Benson. Bobby Benson has not gotten back to me for a few weeks now. I have tried calling their facility number and sent emails as well with no reply. I hope they can do an interview with me by the end of this week in person.

Update for March 28th 2022

Whatʻs been happening for the past 2 weeks?

These last two weeks I had scheduled to meetings that did not completely go as plan. One meeting went well, but that meeting was over Google meets which came with a few complications with internet connection. The internet problems being on the person I was interviewing end. 

Whatʻs going on for the next 2 weeks?

During the next two weeks, I will be doing an interview with two individuals from DVAC (Domestic Violence Action Center of Hawaii). They just got back to me to do an interview with them, but there are tight time restraints on both myself as well as the facility itself. We do have a back up planned to schedule a Zoom on the Weekends because DVAC into is closed over the weekend.  

Hiccups/Hurdles/AHA moments

The Growing number of Homelessness portion of my project has not gotten back to me after giving them dates in regards to what works for me and then. I believe that is one of my biggest hurdles. I also believe that another thing that I consider to be a big hurdle would have to be that I only have half of my interviews done and it is causing a toll on where I was supposed to be with editing and such.

I am behind schedule which is really concerning me both physically and mentally. My goal was to have all interviews done by this week, but I don't have even half of them. I do hope to at least have five of the six done by the 1st of this month so that I am able to do all my editing next month.

So Today I was supposed to have to interviews and both got rescheduled. For the educators portion we will be filming tomorrow morning 3/25/22 at 8 am. Today was a busy day for both of us. As a Teacher/VP she had a lot on her plate with students on campus so I totally understood.

For the individual who works with homeless in our community she is the higher up for the company and was stuck in back to back meetings and rescheduled for next week. 

With my project, so far, I have learned to role with things and adjust to individuals as well because they do make time for me out of there days to do their interviews.

It is 12:13 am on 3/23/2022, I am sending out a rough cut of the first interview that I did with Dr. Taketa. In the rough cut, I have placeholders for portions where I need to still record my portion (Intro to the topic, a transition from Negative moments to positive, and finally the information to reach individuals/conclusion of this portion of my project.

Weekly Updates 3/22/22

Education Portion: 

This week I will be interviewing an individual from Kapolei High School. She was previously a teacher a few years ago and found the need for a reliable vice principal in her community. She is currently in the process of formally becoming a vice principal. With her interview, It will be done online to ensure the safety of herself as well as individuals on campus. For the B-role, I will need to ask to film on their campus with no individuals in the video to avoid extra paperwork. 

Homelessness Portion:

On the same day, I will be working with an individual from my community who works in housing families and individuals who are or were previously homeless. She is one of the leads who works with multiple individual companies to insure that people are housed and can maintain income to stay in their homes/apartments. With this individual, I will be filming on sight at Kahumana located in the Waianae area. I have done B-role prior and I have pictures of families that they have previously housed in the last year or so.

Aha Moment

Well editing my project on Adobe Premier, I had an Aha moment looking back on my research paper that I did last semester(Fall 2021). In my research the forms of Mental Abuse that happens amongst individuals. In the interview that exact research was elaborated by real-life case scenarios that Dr. Taketa elaborated on a bit deeper. I thought was an amazing thing to share that I discovered about my research and my project.

Mini Update:  3/15/22 

Today is a full editing day for me. Here is a very small snip from the hour session that I had with Dr. Taketa when we did his interview. It is really rough because I need to add openers, check the audio, and adjust some b-role clips.

On 3/13/22, I finished the basic outline for my project website. All I need to do is add the videos after I edit them and receive approval before posting. Within Spring Break I will be editing both Dr. Taketa and Senator Shimabukuro. I will also be collecting content from the senator’s social media that she gave permission on. For Dr. Taketaʻs interview I will be using the b-role I collected the day of filming his interview and some of the content his student workers sent over. 

For my website, I added a drop down series option so that both phone and desktop users access it. In the drop down portion it has the topics that will be in my project. I also added the comment section to the bottom of each episode for individuals to comment on my videos.

This is how my website is looking so far. Using pictures of Native Hawaiian individuals that I worked with Pre-C word. On my website, I will have an area where it says series meaning the episode. I will order the series in the way I wrote my pre-capstone paper below I will have a comments section. With the website, it will be accessible by a computer as well as phone. When using the website on the phone it will have a different format as shown in the last 2 photos.

Mini Update 03/11/22

I am currently creating a website as a place to put my project after getting approval and editing minor things. I will post the website here as soon as both those things happen hopefully during spring break.

After the website is public, please leave a comment in the comment section on what you love about my project or what you think might need adjustments. The feedback that I receive helps me to improve on my end.

On March 4th, 2022 at the University of Hawaii West Oahu: Academy of Creative Media Building, I did an interview with Senator Maile Shimabukuro. Rep. Shimabukuro is the Senator for district 21:  which encompasses Kalaeloa to Kaena Point on Oahu's leeward side.  For this portion of my project, we talked about Government and the way they impact our lāhui. In particular, we talked about the way she as a senator impact her constituents. 

 Rep Shimabukuro has many roles in different committees in the capital. We discussed further the things that she and those committees have done. Same as Dr. Taketaʻs interview, I saw a portion that will intertwine with my interview that I will be doing within the next couple of weeks with the Growing number of homelessness portion of my project. 

For this interview, we had 3 point lighting: natural backlight from the window, key and fill in front of the Senator. I borrowed the tripod from ACM and I had my sound equipment to record the audio that was needed. For this location, I was able to be secluded from the public by doing the interview in the Incubator space in the building. This made this interview go well and smoothly. My camera cuts off after a given amount of time of recording, so we took a pause and continued with the recording. We did this within the time frame that I gave the Senator and it allowed her time to have to talk to us about where we see this project going.
