This is what made me fall in love with Worldcon (the World Science Fiction and Fantasy convention) and subsequently SFF literary cons in general. Comic-Cons and the like are so often outright commercial events where the guests are either there to promote a thing or do some anodyne panel that's more or less fanservice.
At community-focused conventions, the panels are held by fans (and, by my preference, academics) on any kind of subject that they're passionate about. It's sooo much more interesting and gives so much more to me.
Though of course that kind of con also has many flaws related to internal politics, organizer peculiarities, and so on and so forth. They're just a lot better!
If you don't know anything about what goes on at SFF conventions and want to know, page 15 to 114 of this PDF has the preliminary programme of the largest con of last year, Glasgow 2024.
I'll be real? Dashcon 2 was a lot of fun. I attended virtually but I have to say out of all the conventions I've been to Dashcon 2 had the most fun panels I've ever seen. I mean no shade to anime conventions but once you've been to enough of them, the panels get very samey - it's all how to draw anime and voice acting 101, which aren't bad, but once you've seen them you've seen them. I've never been to a convention before with panels about Warrior Cats war crimes or startups to make the internet less lonely or meme history or just about being disabled in general - disability acknowledgement at events like these is very rare in my experience. At anime conventions these days I find myself wandering the halls because the most interesting thing is socializing. But in the internet age, you want to keep the panels fresh too, and I really do think we should take a leaf out of Dashcon 2's book for that. It took me back to my first conventions, I had a whole day planned out. I haven't done that in years.
Thank you Dashcon 2. Whether or not it continues, this was really the redemption that you and tumblr deserved for a long time coming.

This is coming from a man who has been struggling with mental illness for most of his life and comes from a long line of severely mentally ill men, the problem around discussions about ‘men’s mental health’ is that everyone is dancing around the fact that a lot of mentally ill men don’t want to get better.
I don’t mean they enjoy being severely depressed and unhealthy. I mean they have zero desire to try to get better. Not just a fear of seeking treatment due to ‘stigma’, men are less likely to be compliant with medication and treatment and therapeutic methods. This is what gives rise to things like the incel movement, choosing to do anything but attempt introspection and try to improve. And so many mentally ill men develop the crab in a bucket mentality where they try to drag people down with them, where they’re hurting so they hurt others and put the burden of their mental health on them.
You hear stories of 45 year old men who blew their brains out alone in their apartment and weren’t found for four months and you think ‘oh my god, no one was there for him’ but in all likelihood that man pushed everyone out of his life long ago. They cut ties with him for their own health and wellbeing. He felt deeply unpleasant so he behaved deeply unpleasantly.
I’ve seen this spiral in the men in my family and it is part of the reason I keep trying and I refuse to give up. I try different medications. I try different therapy and thought techniques. I try to recognize when I’m in a bad headspace and choose my words more carefully. It is my responsibility. Sure, I can ask for help and love and guidance from my loved ones but it is ultimately my job to keep trying. And many mentally ill men, especially cishet men, simply will not take on that responsibility.

i walk a fine line between “i’m asexual and i hate how much the world revolves around sex” and “sex is way too stigmatized and people should be able to be more open about it if they want to”

Hello and welcome to my blog <3 Right now this is mainly the place where I rant about Korean GL series Friendly Rivalry, but it might replace my old all-purpose GL blog in the future. I also make fan music videos sometimes.

Exactly this. Having a one mystery per season means it's like five episodes of false leads, characters being dumbasses, and the enemy needing to be a super genius. It makes me so tired, and like the op writes, it's often paired with a miserable grimdark story where people start unhappy, then become more unhappy, then resolves unhappily.
Mystery-of-the-week lets you show the many ways your protagonist can solve a situation, how they deal with lots of different people. Then you can lead up to a bigger arc that draws on previous experiences!
i really could write an essay on how shit is that we’ve completely abandoned the monster-of-the-week episode format even when rebooting shows that relied on it to replace them with grimdark edgy plotlines where nothing feels good or accomplished at the end of the day
