When In Tacloban
One of the perks of working in a corporate company is the opportunity to travel to different places. This was what got my heart racing (both for joy and for nervousness) when it was announced that we would be doing plant visits during the month of August.
Already travelling just 1 month into a new company! Eek!
The main purpose of the trip was to engage with the end-users at the plant. But of course, a little R&R after a meeting wouldnât hurt. I mean, itâs not everyday you get to visit other parts of the Philippines. So, with the short time given until the last flight home to Cebu, we got to go to the San Juanico Bridge, remnants of the Yolanda Typhoon and bought some Tacloban delicacies from Downtown. As much as we wanted to, we didnât get to drop by the McArthur monument because of time constraints. If we did, we wouldnât be able to make it on the flight home.

First stop was the remnants of a boat that was dragged into land during Typhoon Yolanda. This was conveniently cut, repainted and turned into a tourist spot and reminder of the devastating storm. A Lola sat near the entrance with a guest book where one can list their names as visitors. No entrance fee, just a guest book. Although it sat calmly at the side of the road, it makes you think of natureâs power but at the same time we remember how we are taken care of the God who created nature. Thoughts like that canât be bought or paid for.

We stopped in the middle of the bridge to take some pictures. I guess people from Tacloban are used to tourists doing that (if you consider us tourists. haha). The bridge shook occasionally every time a heavy truck would pass, but that didnât stop us from taking some amazing pictures. Me, being the camera-shy type, took the scenic route and took pictures to showcase the bridge itself (ha!).
Right before rushing into the airport, we dropped by a small pasalubong store in the city to bring home some treats. Although we couldnât find mazapan de pili (as mommy requested), I bought instead some moron, binagol, and some pili nuts. Nuts seem to be all the rage here.
The trip itself was fulfilling. To be able to share in a different culture of an island that is just a 30 minute flight away makes you question and appreciate a lot of things in life. Add to that the fact that the people of Tacloban were able to rebuild their lives after the typhoon disaster, and you have a hearty island visit. Tacloban breathes a calm, island life with its citizens having slight caution over their surroundings. I have to admit, Tacloban feels like the old Cebu before it became bustling with tourists, businesses and popular culture. Its cleaner and more disciplined in Tacloban compared to Cebu â Kudos to the government and itâs people! Makes me want to come back an really experience the island life since what I got was just a taste test.

144-Year-Old Japanese Pink Wisteria Tree
Covering an area of over 2,000 square meters, this tree has been part of the Ashikaga Flower Park in Japan since 1870. Because of the nature of Wisteria trees spreading, itâs heavy branches are now supported by metal structures allowing tourists to get amazing photo opportunity below its canopy. (Source)

Avatar State and Spiritual State by dCTb
Companion piece to Spiritual State that I did last year. Coloring and lining this was too much for me and my laptop. I really like how this came out but this style was very challenging so I know a lot of little things couldâve been better if I had some more experienece. Despite how difficult this was for me to do, Iâm already thinking that I should do another similar piece for Aang!

A song about Peeta Mellark ( Character from the Hunger games trilogy ) written by a swedish artist ; Jonathan Thulin. I love it. It should have been in the soundtrack
Well let me imagine this is the truth , but really it âs so PeetaÂ
Wait ⌠I read somewhere it was really written for Peeta Mellark after all!! oh myÂ

The last song âPeetaâ is also very impacting as Jonathan sings about freedom and fighting for what it is ours. Based on the book and movie series âThe Hunger Gamesâ (which I have not seen or read!), this metaphorical and abstract pop radio friendly tune brings a smile to my face as this track encourages me to stand up and defend my beliefs.Â
Jonathan Thulin - Peeta Lyrics
Artist:Â Jonathan Thulin
Album:Â The White Room
I wanna live, bake the bread and pour the wine. I wanna love all the world and all thatâs mine. I wanna dream precious pearls and everdeen I wanna fight for the right I know is mine. And go where the wind blows, and go where the wind blows. Donât you wanna go? Show them what youâre made of, Anywhere it takes us, go, Following the war drum, anything for freedom. I wanna bleed, bleed the blood of harmony. I wanna shout so all can hear my battle cry. I wanna break all the hands that hold me down I wanna fly to that district in the sky. And go where the wind blows, and go where the wind blows. Donât you wanna go? Show them what youâre made of, Anywhere it takes us, go, Following the war drum, anything for freedom. May the odds be in your favor tonight, As we show the world, change the world. May the odds be in your favor tonight As we show the world, change the world. May the odds be in your favor tonight As we show the world, change the world. May the odds be in your favor tonight As we show the world, change the world. Donât you wanna go? Show them what youâre made of, anywhere it takes, Letâs go, following the war drum, anything, Donât you wanna go? Show them what youâre made of, anywhere it takes, Letâs go, following the war drum, anything for freedom. Anything for freedom.
