The Perfect Bar Path — Snatches and Cleans — TechniqueWOD 142 w/ Doug Larson
youtube
Having good technique on snatches and cleans is all but impossible, if you don’t have a good start position and first pull.
Often people are taught to use their lats to pull the bar toward their body throughout the first and second pulls. This is correct… You should do that… But it’s a small component of keeping the bar close to your body.
The rest trick is to rock toward your heels on your first pull. When you do this the bar will automatically shift toward you putting you in the best position possible to explode on your second pull.
Watch the video to see what I mean, practice this week, and let me know where you have trouble and I can make a follow up video.
Enjoy!

In this episode of Building A Badass, I talk about having confidence in your own work and knowledge, and what you can give the world by being who you are. I tell you how I unexpectedly became a writer through living my passion and being curious about the world.

Real Chalk  — Maternity Expert, Entrepreneur & Certified Boss Ass Bit*^ w/ Nancy Anderson  — 43

This episode is peppered in with all the things; how to start and grow an online business, follow your dreams while answering to no one, raising the standard of care for pregnancy and post pregnancy women, debunking pregnancy fitness myths, nutrition chat, and so much more.
Fitness and nutrition expert, Nancy Anderson (M.S. Kinesiology) has paved the way for women to be less scared of “ruining” their bodies from pregnancy, training hard during pregnancy (Crossfit anyone?!), prioritizing self care, and being the breadwinner in her family. Gender norms? WTF is that? She gets raw, real, and down and dirty to how she moved her training business from the gym to online and is on her way to almost a 10x year in her second year of business.
In this episode, she chats about how she did it, her tips for others who want to start their own business, finding your passion, and how to stand out in an industry that is so inundated with the “kardashian effect” as she calls it – meaning seeing through the ‘fake-ness’ on social media.
Mom of 2 (both c-sections), Nancy trains over 1,000 moms every month online helping them train for pregnancy, train during pregnancy, heal their bodies and bounce back post pregnancy without any of the fluffy pink dumbbell bullshi*t. Real programs, real workouts, real results, based on real science.
Listen here for all of this and more plus a few f*bombs. Sorry in advance!

Archer Pushups — TechniqueWOD 141 w/ Doug Larson
youtube
I often want to do heavy pressing, but don’t have access to a bench and weights (traveling…). When this happens I usually choose to do variations of one arm push-ups; archer push-ups are one of my favorites.
They’re not quite a true one arm push-up as you’re still getting support from both arms, but the loading on a prime moving arm is much higher than it normally is during a standard push-up.
Depending on how strong you are you may only be able to do sets of 3-5 reps making it a great option for developing your pressing strength.
If you’re stronger than that, then true one arm pushups may be a better option. If that’s way too difficult, then you can stick to regular pushups or do one of the scaled options seen in the video.
Enjoy!

Aaron Hinde is Co-Founder and President of LIFEAID Beverage Company, a leading manufacturer of premium, healthy, and convenient nutritional products designed to boost performance and speed recovery for people pursuing active and healthy lifestyles.
Aaron’s passion for athleticism and his ability to equip people with the formula to perform at maximum capacity has played a major role throughout my career. After earning a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College, he served as Clinic Director at Hinde Chiropractic Sports Injury and Pain Center for over ten years. As one of the top practices in Santa Cruz County, he helped over 5,000 individuals, including professional athletes, erase their pain and return to function as quickly as possible.
Being immersed in the health field, Aaron noticed a genuine need in the marketplace for clean and effective sports drinks without the sugar and artificial flavoring. In 2011, he co-founded LIFEAID to provide individuals with specially formulated, low-sugar, high-value natural supplement beverages.
In this episode, we talk about the future of Fitaid IPO, growing successful companies inside CrossFit, throwing the baddest CrossFit Games afterparty, steroids in the CrossFit Game season, managing the messaging between sport and health in CrossFit, and more.

Great Article With Plenty Of Insights About Baseball
The great thing about baseball is that its appeal really does span all socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures. With hard work and the right information, baseball is a sport that is accessible to all. Keep on reading to discover how to get the most out of playing baseball each and every time out.
Whenever you hit the ball in fair territory, run at full steam. Even if it appears like an easy out, you’ve got to give it your all. It may be that the opposing team misplays the ball, or it may take a tricky bounce giving you just enough time to reach base.
Always hustle to first base, even if you think you have made an out. You never know what could happen with fielder; he could drop the ball or throw it away. By running as fast as you can, you may be able to get a base hit you did not expect.
Always wear protective equipment when playing baseball. Just like any sport, injuries happen in baseball. Especially when batting, you need to protect your head. That means you need to wear a helmet whenever you enter the batter’s box. One poor pitch can mean a fastball hitting you in the noggin. That’s at minimum a ringing headache with the potential for a concussion or worse. Be safe.
When coaching baseball, there are a few things you will need to have close at hand. Be certain you keep a good first aid kit, properly stocked and at the ready. Bring along plenty of water and electrolyte drinks to help players avoid dehydration. Have your practice plan ready for each day with detailed drills and broken into manageable time segments. Naturally, you must be certain of having all the right equipment.
Make sure you stay aware of where every player is located on the field. If you know where everyone is, it is easier to avoid collisions. Head injuries are possible in player collisions. The best way to prevent such accidents is to alert others anytime you go for a ball.
To improve arm strength and gain a steadier swing, purchase some bat weights and practice with them regularly. By working out with a heavier bat than you will use when at the plate, you will able to boost accuracy, refine your batting abilities and become a key contributor to your team’s fortunes.
To be a better player in the outfield, you have to be moving. If you stand in the same position too long, your legs can get tight and you will not be able to run when a ball is headed your way. The best way to stay moving is to take a few steps between pitches.
Keep an eye on the signs from your coaches as you are running bases. You should focus on the bases and the base coaches because they can see the entire field. When running bases, concentrate on the base, not the ball. Your coaches can help you see. When your base coach gives you the signal to stop, stay on the base. If they tell you go to, sprint.
Don’t be afraid to get your uniform dirty. Baseball is a game played in grass and dirt. You aren’t playing to 100% if you come out of any game with your uniform as pristine as it was when you first put it on. Make it a goal to get as dirty as possible.
If you are playing an outfield position, you need to choose the correct pair of sunglasses. These glasses should not distort your peripheral vision. The best styles are those that are frameless. The sunglass lens should wrap all the way to your temples to help keep the maximum amount of sunlight from your eyes.
To keep your fingers from getting hurt while bunting, make sure to keep them on your side of the bat. If you wrap them around the bat, the pitch can hit them. You end up with a painful bunt, with no control over where the ball goes, instead of a nifty sacrifice.
To prepare yourself to throw out a runner, when you are catching, hold your throwing hand behind your back. As the pitch approaches, move it up behind the glove, so that you snatch it out of the glove and throw it as quickly as possible, while you jump up to a standing position.
Practice bunting, even if you are a power hitter. Bunting is a bit of a lost art in baseball. The idea is to simply tap the ball into play, taking the infield, pitcher and catcher off-guard. This is a smart tactic to move a teammate over from first to second or to even score an infield hit. A power hitter bunting is so unexpected that it really can be effective.
When pitching, you cannot forget that after the ball is released it’s in play. It will often go into the catcher’s mitt and then back to your glove without a play being made. However, you have to be at the defensive at all times as soon as you touch the ball, and you need the ability to react quickly.
Help your kid become a better pitcher or baseball player by helping them better their arm strength. They can do some light tossing and light dumbbells. Tube exercises are also very beneficial for this purpose. Long tosses are very important, but you need to make sure they are under control.
Baseball gloves are not cheap, so it’s important to take care of your glove. Routine maintenance includes keeping your glove clean and dry and storing it in a cool, dry area. Occasionally, you should condition your glove. If your glove accidentally gets wet, allow it to air dry and apply leather conditioner to soften it.
Baseball is beloved in all corners of the globe and has fans of all descriptions. Given the relatively small amount of equipment required to play, it is open to nearly everyone. Keep the above tips handy, and it will be possible for every aspiring ballplayer to learn the skills necessary to play successfully.

Feed Me Fuel Me  — Shrugged Collective w/ Doug Larson  — 106
youtube
To whom much is given, much is required. Or so they say. Doug Larson sees it a bit differently, as he has been given much in the way of coaching and mentorship, so he has made it his mission to give as much, if not more, as he has received. Doug is the cofounder of Barbell Shrugged, one of the longest running podcasts in the fitness space and still going strong.Doug has understood the value of coaching and mentorship since his adolescence, when his coach took him under his wing and introduced him to the world of strength and conditioning. He would go on to play football in college while building proficiency in mixed martial arts and jiu-jitsu. As his education flourished he followed his mentor to Memphis, Tennessee where he would attain his Masters in Movement Science and meet his eventual co-hosts and business partners Mike Bledsoe and Chris Moore. Together they would train together, run a gym, and start one of the most prolific fitness podcasts ever.
Join us this week as we dive deep into the journey of Doug’s evolution from student, to teacher, to master. Find out why Doug has made it his mission to pass on as much knowledge, through as many mediums as possible (ebooks, seminars, podcasts, etc…), reciprocating all that he has been fortunate enough to receive. Doug truly is the embodiment of the abundance mentality and we can’t wait to share his message with you this week on Feed Me Fuel Me!

Kettlebell Bent Press  — Overhead Strength — TechniqueWOD 140 w/ Doug Larson
youtube
Barbell overhead pressing gets old. There are many other ways to get stronger overhead.
Having truly strong and stable shoulders means being strong and stable in a variety of positions using a variety of different tools and exercises; bodyweight, dumbbells and kettlebells all have their place.
The kettlebell bent press is a great addition if you think adding some variety to your pressing will pull you out of a “plateau” and cause you to gain some new found strength overhead.
Plus, you’ll get some serious loading all along the sides of your torso leading to greater core stability over time.
Note: If you have poor shoulder external rotation, then this isn’t the best movement for you.
Try 4 sets of 5 per side (heavy but not close to failure) to finish off your next training session.
Enjoy!

Building a Badass — ? — 4

After Seeing a flash into my chosen path, I decided to follow my mother’s footsteps into a war zone, Operation Iraqi Freedom. I took a job as a contractor in Iraq at 22 years old and jumped in blind, having no idea the consequences of my actions, good or bad.
Iraq turned out to be my “university” and taught me how to be relentless. Once in Iraq I had an epiphany during my first mortar attack and took action. Through the four years of my contracting service, I explored new parts of who I was, and who I wanted to become, the Badass you know today.

Feed Me Fuel Me  — Morning Chalk Up w/ Justin Lofranco  — 105
youtube

Justin LoFranco has a beautiful mind when it comes to community relations. If his career on the campaign trail in a previous life is any indication, some would say he’s a master. However, as many before him discover, the world of politics is cut throat, and your job security is tied to the opinion of the masses. This means, there is no security at all. After burning the candle at both ends for the majority of his twenties, Justin’s passion for late night dinners, networking, and ultimately relying on others for his success, came to end as his delegate was not reelected.
Rather than move on and join another campaign, Justin moved home. He had been introduced to the culture and community over the years while assisting in the management of campaigns. Yet, he had not been exposed to a resource that was absolutely dialed in with world community of CrossFit. A resource that showcased, the good. The bad. The ugly. But more often than not, the amazing things going on in the global neighborhood that is CrossFit. It is an entity with its own vernacular that transcends culture, region, or dialect. CrossFit communities the world over have raised money for many different causes, from those for a member of a gym, to disaster relief in the aftermath of a hurricane. There are best practices and people out there innovating coaching and business. An entirely new industry has emerged as a result of this cultural boom. In his parent’s basement, Justin decided to take a grassroots approach to spotlighting all of these talking points in a DAILY newsletter. Thus “The Morning Chalk Up” was born!
Where there is a will, there is a way, and Justin has tremendous will. He has paved the way, by giving up 2 years of his life to get the Morning Chalk Up off the ground and consolidating a WORLD’s-worth of content into a condensed format that further links CrossFitters across all boundaries. Need to know when/where the next big competition is? See the latest edition of The Morning Chalk Up. Want to see who is killing it in philanthropy? Open your email.
