This week I am posting pictures from the beginnings of a story on race in America over on the feed of @momentaworkshops . Police officers salute at the funeral of NYPD Officer Rafael Ramos on December 27, 2014, at Christ Tabernacle Church in Glendale, NY. Officer Ramos and his partner, Officer Wenjian Liu, were murdered while sitting in their patrol car in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Their killer Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, was motivated to revenge by the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown and reportedly wanted to put "wings on pigs.” After the shooting Brinkley took his own life. Since 2012 I have been photographing with Brittney for my project Hey,Best Friend. This past June I was able to spend time with Brittney at her home in Antwerp, New York where she lived with Sandra, Jasmine (Sandra’s 15-year-old daughter) and Jasmine’s youngerbrother.
On March 27th, 2015 at 2:30am Jasmine died when her home caught fire. Sandra was able to save Jasmine’s 7-year-old brother and herself bybreaking open a window with her bare arm. She was unable to save Jasmine, who was sleeping in her bed at the time.
I am having a print sale to help raise funds for Sandra and her family. Please consider purchasing a print, donating to Sandra’s GoFundMe campaign or sharing this post to help raise money for Sandra and her family. Thank you.

A young girl looks out of a window of her home in the Back Maryland neighborhood of Atlantic City, which at the time had seen a surge in violence among neighborhood gangs. I met many people who said they feared leaving their homes at night. I made this picture on assignment while interning at the Press of Atlantic City. At the time, I thought nothing of it. However looking back on it, I realized just how symbolic this photo is to the lives of many children growing up in a environment filled with a culture of violence in their own backyards. Many of the people growing up in this environment experience post traumatic stress similar to soldiers in a war zone, and there is not much being done to help those affected. I am posting pictures from Violent Times on @causebeautiful this week. Please check it out. #ICauseBeautiful #documentary #reportage #violence #gunviolence #atlanticcity #urbanamerica #ig_americas #everydayusa #ptsd

Felipe Esteben, 18, from Oaxaca, Mexico at the Kino Border Initiative Aid Center for Deported Migrants. Felipe was deported after trying to cross the border into the United States. He attempted to cross with a group from his neighborhood in Oaxaca. Dr. Tibor Palfai, a psychology professor at Syracuse University, in his office. Dr. Palfai's research examines the effects of drugs on the mind. "You learn it, you love it, you learn where to get it. You condition yourself to when you used it. Everything is pleasant about it. From there on in your hooked, and that's your addiction." #heroin #drugs #addiction #psychology #cny #photography #documentary #photooftheday (at Syracuse University)

Melissa Hosier and her daughters, Leah and Kacey, look through thank you letters that various middle school students wrote to Melissa for speaking about her daughter Kali and the dangers of heroin. Kali died last year of an overdose. A recent report from the CDC showed that the amount of heroin overdoses in the U.S. quadrupled from 2010 to 2014. #heroin #addiction #abuse #newyork #cny #youth #documentary @hosiermelissa

The national guard outside of the Ferguson police station on November 25, 2014, the day after the non-indictment decision. Ferguson has been on my mind after the Justice Department's report on the Ferguson Police. From the report the Ferguson police and court system "reflect and exacerbate existing racial bias" and widespread racial discrimination. #ferguson #race #injustice #michaelbrown #photography #photooftheday #police (at Ferguson Police Department)

Wes talks about his job rebuilding homes in Syracuse. He lives in the homes he rebuilds. After going to jail a few weeks ago, he has been clean and finally got into a 30 day program at a rehab facility. He starts it on Monday. I will be posting a few photos for the next couple weeks as we finishing filming our short documentary on Heroin abuse in Upstate New York. #heroin #abuse #addiction #film #documentary #syracuse #newyork #upstate #drugs
