Art Project 5 : Open Work
Free.
Statement
For this last project I decided to do a digital drawing of something that I enjoy drawing--it is pretty much it. I love drawing wings and nature, they seem so unrestricted from this world and free. I think I thought of this work mainly because I have been stuck at home for most of the semester, as many others have. But today not only marks the end of one of the hardest semesters for me personally, but also the day I got my final vaccine shot! I feel free from a lot of doubt and worry, and this in a way represents that. Despite me being ready to, what seems like, start over, I will dearly miss this class. There are so many amazing artists that I immensely enjoyed seeing their work, this class has so many great creatives! I'm thankful that this is our last assignment, its a real treat to create with no limitations-- like we are really free!
I hope that everyone enjoys their summer break and it was great being in this class with yall. If yall got socials where you post your art, I would love to follow you on them! -Danny

That is some solid editing. You did a really good job connecting the dialogue to the characters of Avatar.

Open Project #5
Taking advantage of the open nature allotted to us with this final project. I decided to use this allotted time to practice some old skills that I haven’t used in quite some time. I went and created a 3D model of a guitar inside Maya. It’s actually one of the first things I ever modeled. That was almost eight years ago. It was an interesting trip down memory lane. It was also a pleasant surprise that my skills are still somewhat intact. The one major downside was that my speed has dropped dramatically in that time. This took me close to three times longer than back in the day. Hopefully, I’ll have time in the future to practice these skills more often because it brought back the spark I used to feel while working inside of Maya.

Nice job man. Have fun learning animation. It’s difficult but also very rewarding in the long run.
GIFS
I really enjoyed this final and the freedom it gave me. That freedom allows me to work in a way that I felt would benefit me regarding what I plan to do with my art in the future. It’s hard to find motivation in things I do not feel I will utilize or benefit from. Because I hope to get into animation, I took the opportunity to create my own gifs. I was originally intent on doing three but between getting the drawings done, trial, error, work, etc. I only ended up finishing two. But thanks to this class I plan to make more until the frames are fluid and more complex.

Assignment #4 : Walls
Artist statement
I’ve noticed, over the past couple of months, a steady untick in my reading consumption. It’s now become my go-to form of daily respite, allowing for me to step away from the slog of everyday life. Everybody has their own means of decompressing from the outside world, and through whatever means that may be, we build a wall between ourselves and everything else.

I found the video to somehow be both calming and exhilarating at the same time. I think this is because the music and video balance each other so well.

This was some solid editing. The cuts are perfectly on the beat and I think that helps sell the emotional punch of each scene.

Excellent choice in the subject matter. Good job.
Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire is a supercut exploring cigarettes in cinema. Smoking is a toxic behavior that almost seems pushed on individuals through harmful propaganda without the public even knowing. The piece is divided into actors and actresses combined to the song “Smoke Signals” by Extreme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGm5ef2mU0Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDzcBb-wlg0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3WimOBBq-M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrVm9wKXi38 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VeYkS6FfM8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar496S71DAo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sC6f-Qbmhs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HREKKEcwdHU

I like the choice of videos you went with. They complement and juxtaposed each other really well.

Sweet Dreams:
My goal was to contrast these very painterly scenes against something that is trying to more closely resemble reality. I wanted to embrace the ideas of dreaming and anxiety and how they interact with one another. I wanted to focus on these instances of creativity as sparks throughout the day, remnants of dreams, as the contrast with reality.

Artist statement .
Within “A call to war” wanted to capture the moment where we can seen these character have an inner monologue with themselves. Coming to terms with the horror’s that lay before and their ultimate acceptance of their situation. Though their facial expression we can tell what they are feeling. With out them having to utter a single word..

As someone with little interest in politics. In just over a minute, you were able to make truly hate somebody. Well done.

Artist Statement.
Being that I am a political person I decided to bring that energy to my Super Cut. I have a strong disdain for Tucker Carlson and his work. I think he is a fear monger that will say anything he needs to given the situation and can change whims on a dime. By definition of his own words, I see him as a child that should in fact do something else, anything else.

Reading and Response 4
A Hidden History
This was an interesting article to read since my historical knowledge of performance was lacking. One of the parts that intrigued me was the differing schools of thought’s approaches to using performance art. Which I feel probably lead to a more robust and art form down the line. Allowing for a “rich and extensive evolution,” as the article so aptly describes. Performance art has definitely been something I’ve struggled with full grasping like many others. I’ve found that when I encounter topics like this, the best way for me to get past this hurdle is to delve into its formation. I guess seeing it from a historical perspective helps me to better contextualize it.
The Other History
This reading really packed a punch and was jammed full with information. It was actually kind of a jarring transition going from “A hidden history” to this one. Since “A hidden History” focused on the white European perspective of performance arts evolution. This gave us a darker and I would say a more realistic historical recounting. Showing some of the dehumanizing acts that individuals of color went through. I like how the article brought up the point that reinforcement of negative stereotypes is still present in today’s mass media. It’s something that’s been ingrained in the culture for so long that it might take even longer to fuller eradicate it. Art can have effects on society for a longer period of time than people might realize.

Artist Statement:
I went back and forth between a couple of ideas for this assignment. I was interested in exploring the evolution of someone or something over an extended period of time. I decided to go with Akira Kurosawa’s use of weather throughout his films. It’s present in every single one of the films and something he continually developed over his 50-year career. Turning it into a sort of trademark of his. Such uses include adding dynamic motion, enhancing the atmosphere, or even reflecting the moods of his characters. Giving him a unique style that no one has come close to mimicking.
