“Well then I’m not too far off.” Andromeda looked down at the daisy roots with a frown. She didn’t enjoy having her mistakes pointed out, especially when she knew, or at least thought she know, she had followed the instructions to the letter. “They are mine... Is there that much of a difference between mincing and slicing?”

Andromeda had been watching Isla as she waited for her next class, intrigued to see how things would play out. As Isla passed the blame onto another student she shook her head disapprovingly. “Smooth,” her lips broke into a slight smirk. “This is going to make Filch’s day. Were you planning for that to happen?”

Caradoc would have loved to supply her with a decent answer, or really with anything that would have gotten him off safe, but his thoughts came at the moment seldom and only half-distinguishable. What could he possibly say that would make this less painful? It was the only thing that mattered, at the time, not the fact that he’d been stalking someone that didn’t deserve it, and certainly not that the whole situation was royally screwed and condemning. “I was following you because…” he clutched his wand, searching desperately for anything to say. “I don’t… no, I can’t. I can’t. I’m sorry.”

Her eyebrows furrowed as she considered what to do next, she couldn’t just keep him tied up like this forever. Students she wasn’t worried about, but it might be difficult to explain the scene to a teacher if one walked by. Besides, she was starting to think his fear wasn’t just because of her in which case he was the least of her worries. “Did someone tell you follow me? Are they threatening you?” She asked, her tone was still harsh but she loosened the jink ever so slightly. “If they are, I can help you. I can protect you if you just tell me who sent you.”

“I could lie to you and say yes, that I do think we’re far too young to be engaged and worried about what will bring about a happy marriage but I don’t like lying to those who are important to me.” Perhaps the statement would have been awkward had it been the previous year but she would be a part of his family one way or another and would join the small number of people he actually placed interest into. “So, no I don’t find it odd that I’m engaged to your sister. I don’t believe we are too young to make these commitments. You’re the second oldest and were possibly given more freedom from responsibility when compared to Bellatrix’s. It’s normal, you can even see it with me and Rabastan. We’re brought up knowing this would happen at a young age. Never were we, the heirs of our families, allowed to believe that we would be making that choice and at some point you accept it. It’s part of our duty as the first born. Now if we talk specifically about your engagement to Rabastan, maybe that was a bit premeditated. You’re not expected to get married the second you graduate school, an engagement is a promise to marry but it doesn’t set a date. You two have time and besides, you won’t be allowed to marry until after Bellatrix and I do.”

 While the details of his own wedding were being discussed between two women that wanted to outshine the other, Rodolphus knew that the date was ultimately their choice. “If you want to worry about homework and exams then worry about that and maybe make time to get to know Rabastan better. You can still live a life but now you have someone that will stand by your side when you need them to.” Throughout everything, his tone had been soft and understanding. It was a side most didn’t see but then again, most wouldn’t be marrying into his family. 

Andromeda listened carefully as he spoke and couldn’t help but feel that what he was saying made sense. She had always known that this was just the way things were for people like them. Their grandparents had married to increase their influence, as had their parents and so would they. She had too much self-respect, or was it pride, to just bow her head and agree to marry someone she thoroughly disliked, but what other way was there? She could accept it and try to make the best of the situation or she could fight against it, either way it would end in her marriage to Rabastan. “You’re right,” she agreed with a small frown, suppressing her stubborn instinct to disagree. Rodolphus certainly had a convincing way of speaking, she could see why so many young purists flocked to him. “At least I’ll have Bellatrix’s example to follow. Has Rabastan said anything about our engagement to you?”

Ted noticed her white cheeks turn a shade of pink at his comment causing his smile to form into a grin. She was the reason he was unable to sleep, she was the reason he would get lost in thoughts and she was the reason he felt happy. Truly happy. He stretched his legs out and shook his head at her words, attempting to protest her questions but knowing fully well that he would never be able to say no to her. “But i’m so boring.” He sighed. “Do you really want me to bore you? You might fall asleep actually and that won’t be ideal because I don’t think I would be allowed to carry you to your common room and I would feel awful if you slept out here and caught a cold.” He teased before he turned his body slightly to face her. “Very well then. You asked for it. I did warn you though so if you start snoring out here on the astronomy tower know that you were given the heads up.” Ted winked. “So, I’m from Devon. I have a sister. Elizabeth. You already knew that though. She is a true angel and I love her more than anything. My mum is called Emily, she is a nurse, she is the most brilliant woman ever. She’s so strong, brave…she has such a big warm loving heart. Elizabeth is very much like her. My dad is called Thomas. Dad is a university professor…university is basically the higher education in the muggle world.” Ted leaned his head back against the wall as he spoke, tilting it to the side and keeping his gaze on her as he poured out information about his very ordinary life to a very extraordinary girl. “Home is my favourite place. I do want to travel, I want to explore the world, but I honestly wouldn’t exchange anywhere to my house in Devon.” 

It was the most beautiful night sky but Ted couldn’t focus on anything another than Andromeda. He was certain that the stars were jealous of how brightly she shone. Moving his hand, his fingertips slowly touched hers and he leaned in closer to her. “I want to know more about you Andie. Sure, I know of your family, I know everything that everyone else in the castle does. However, I don’t know what your favourite flowers are for instance. I don’t know what makes you happy. I don’t know what makes you sad. I want to know you. You can tell me anything you want Andie. You are so much more than just one of the Black sisters and I want to get to know the Andie which dances to my favourite songs with me.” 

“I highly doubt that you could bore me, let alone make fall asleep,” she assured him, laughing lightly. He was one of the most interesting people she knew, the more she learned about him the more she realised just how extraordinary he really was. Honestly, it had come as a surprise to herself when she had started to become friends with the muggleborn Hufflepuff, she had never thought they could have anything in common, or that there was so much she could learn from him. He was the exception to everything she had ever been taught to value, the person who was completely making her reconsider her expectations of those outside her Sacred 28 circle. Andromeda listened, enchanted as he spoke. Everything about him was fascinating to her. His home sounded like it had come straight out of the pages of a fairy tale, especially his picture-perfect family. “That sounds wonderful,” she smiled. “I’ve been to the coast near Devon before but never to the muggle cities. It seems like a beautiful place to grow up. How did your parents react to you and Elizabeth having magic?” 

This time Andromeda didn’t move her hand away from his, the warmth of it felt nice against hers even if the gesture did make her heart beat faster. “I don’t think I even know that version of me. That was entirely your doing. - Know that if you ever try to tell anybody it happened no one will believe you,” she teased. As he asked his questions she looked down, hiding her face behind her hair. She could almost feel his blue eyes shining onto her, revealing a side to her she didn’t know existed. Making her want to be a better, nicer person. The kind of person that would dance to muggle songs in an empty classroom with him. She paused to consider her answer, nobody had ever really wanted to know about her before so she had never given it much thought. “My favourite flowers are probably peonies, we have them in our garden at home, pink and white ones. The gardener knew I liked them so he used to pick them for me to keep in my room when they bloomed in spring. They were just about the only colour our house had,” as she was speaking she turned to face him again, leaning closer, her eyes lighting up as she thought back to her childhood memories. These were things no one else knew about her, yet somehow she felt comfortable sharing them with Ted. “My sister’s make me happy, they mean more to me than anything else in the world and I am very protective of them, especially Narcissa. The three of us have always been there for each other, we used to do everything together, but I worry about what will happen to them now. We’ve been disagreeing a lot lately.” Her expression grew pensive as she finished speaking, her mind returning to one of the other matters that had been keeping her from sleeping.

Sirius wasn’t in a good mood. He wasn’t necessarily in a bad mood either but he certainly wasn’t feeling particularly happy. He was just feeling… moody, for lack of a better word. The end of the year was quickly approaching and it was suddenly occurring to him that he had absolutely no clue what his plan was after graduation. He didn’t know where he was going to live, what job he wanted, or even what he would be slightly interested in doing. Hogwarts had been his life for seven years but even more so since he left his home. He didn’t know what he would do without it. He had always relied on the thought that he’d have his friends, but now, with more of them getting in relationships and whatnot, he wasn’t even sure if that was the same anymore.

This was mostly likely the cause of his mood and explained why he was now alone outside, hoping no one would bother him. He was now laying down on the grass near the lake, smoking as dark fell. Curfew was nearing so he imagined there wouldn’t be that many people about.

As the light began to fade Andromeda closed the book and stood up to walk back to the castle. The lake had always been one of her favourite places to disappear to, to focus on school work or just to get away from the noise of the school which seemed louder now than ever before. She hesitated when she saw somebody lying on her grass and recognised him as one of the few people she wouldn’t walk out her way to avoid. Instead she walked up to Sirius and sat down beside him. “You’re looking more broody than usual. What’s on your mind?”

The darkness of the calm night wrapped around the two of them as if it were protecting them from everyone else, hiding them from everyone else, making them invisible to everyone and anyone except each other. A small smile curled up the corners of his mouth when her gaze fell against his. “Me too. You’re the only person I wanted to see tonight.” He admitted unsure whether he was crossing any of the already blurred lines by saying that. If someone had told Ted that he would find himself in this position with Andromeda Black he would have simply laughed and told them they were bonkers. She wasn’t like anyone else nor did anyone else make him feel this way. Her eyes shone brighter than the stars, so bright and beautiful. Ted had never seen anything so beautiful and all he wanted to do was go in and touch her. She was the fuel, the reason for the raging fire that burned bright inside him. He absently ran his fingers through his golden hair and shrugged his shoulders at her question. “Just life.” Were he a brave man he would be honest and tell her that she was the reason he couldn’t fall asleep. Were he a brave man he would ask her to let him hold her and not let her go. Were he a brave man he would tell her that ever since the thought of even the possibility of her all he wanted was her. Ted was a sensible man but when he was around Andromeda that sensibility seemed to disappear. He became a brave man. 

He wasn’t sure how she felt, she was harder to read than Ted, she held herself and controlled her emotions a lot better. He wasn’t expecting to hear the words that left her even though it was all he wished and hoped for. Knowing that all of this wasn’t in his head and that she also missed him was all he needed to know. It meant that he wasn’t going crazy. “I’ve missed spending time with you too.” He softly sighed, eyes locked against hers.  “Yeah.” He nodded slowly. “I’d like nothing more to then just talk to you.” He pushed himself off against the wall he was leaning against and sat down. “Are you going to stand there or sit with me? I promise I don’t bite.” He laughed lightly as he tried to lighten to mood. “Talk to me Andie, i’ve missed just talking to you. Talk to me about anything you want.” 

A light blush rose to her cheeks at his answer, it made her heart flutter to think that even just a part of him had been feeling the same way that she had been, that she might be the reason he was unable to sleep too. Had this been a few months ago she would have been horrified at the thought of anyone making her do something as silly and childish as blushing but now she hardly noticed when it happened. It was just the effect Ted had on her. Just being around him made her feel calmer, safer in a way that nobody else had ever been able to. He was like the sun that radiated light and warmth wherever he went and for some reason he had chosen to shine his light on her dark existence. Even though every moment spent fraternising with a muggleborn was a risk, she still found herself missing his company after days when she hadn’t seen him. Of course she didn’t dare to say any of this out loud, it was safer to uphold the pretence than admit to what they both wanted to happen. 

“Very well,” she conceded with an amused smile. Her eyes examined the floor wearily but after some deliberating she swallowed her pride, hesitantly straightening her skirt before sitting down on the floor next to him as gracefully as she could manage. It wasn’t exactly the cleanest or most comfortable surface but she supposed she could make an exception this once. She rested her head against the wall behind her, tilting it in his direction. “I want to talk about you. You already know everything there is to know about me really, everything my family does is public knowledge. I want you to tell me about yourself. What’s your home like? And your family?”

“Cissy!” Andromeda called, intercepting her younger sister on her way out of the common room and hooking her arm through hers. “Come on, I haven’t seen you in ages. We need some sister-bonding time.”

Andromeda listened to him speak with a slightly raised brow. She didn’t exactly know what reaction Rabastan was hoping to get by telling her this, a round of applause? Congratulations for coming to this mind-blowing revelation? She was wholly unimpressed by it, though it was possibly the most romantic thing he had said to her in the time they had been engaged. “Oh, well I’m flattered to among them.” In all honestly she’d hardly noticed he was gone, she hardly saw him when he was at Hogwarts. “I hope you found your break beneficial. What else did it involve?”
