❥ synopsis — making a flower crown for xiao <33

a/n — i haven’t written in the looongest time, but he’s my fav ever so i had to ;(

“aaaaaand, it’s done!”

springing up from your place on the grass, you held out the object that’s kept you occupied for last few hours—a flower crown, made of qingxins and wire you had managed to pocket from an old commission. messily woven together, it looked more like a decorative birds nest than a flower crown, but nonetheless it was finished.

xiao’s figure shifted against the tree he was sat leaning against, expression neutral as he watched over you work and weave your way into finishing the flower crown. he was silent for most of the time, switching from observing you from a distance and surveying the area around.

any monster that dared to disturb your peace would never see the light of day again.

you excitedly made your way over to him, holding it out in front of his face. some of the looser bits dangled, causing a few petals to flutter to the floor.

“how’s it look, xiao? i think i did pretty well!” you said proudly, holding it above your head as you inspected your work with noises of approval. as dingy as it was, it wasn’t too bad for a beginner.

xiao gave a curt nod in response, still not understanding the purpose of such a thing. but it made you happy, so he truly didn’t mind. he still found it hard to believe that you had managed to convince him to accompany you during the whole process.

earlier in the day, the adeptus had stumbled upon the sight of you returning to wangshu inn, bundles of flowers tucked in your arms. upon further inspection, he came to the realization that they were qingxins. he found it somewhat difficult to suppress his curiosity, which led him to teleport behind you without a single warning.

"what are you doing?"

you startled as you heard a familiar voice sound behind you, dropping the bundles of flowers that you held in your arms with a squeak. you didn't have to turn around to know who it was. there was only one person who could appear out of thin air within a moment's notice--none other than adeptus xiao.

wide-eyed, you turned around to face him, holding a hand to your chest in an attempt to calm your racing heart from the slight surprise visit. his usual sharp, aloof gaze met your own, causing you to duck your head sheepishly, missing the way it softened when he noticed the fallen bundles of qingxins scattered across the ground.

"xiao, you startled me!" you said breathlessly, huffing as you crouched down to begin picking up the flowers, carefully brushing the debris off from the petals. the last thing you wanted was for the delicate white of the petals to be dirtied by the debris from the floor. he internally winced, clearly not meaning to surprise you. if anything, you really should have been more aware of your surroundings. nonetheless, he felt a bit sorry, even if he didn't admit it.

"that was not my intention," he looked away momentarily before looking back at you, kneeling down on the floor trying to collect all of the bundles, "what is the need for all of these qingxins?"

after picking them all up, you straightened up, meeting his barely-hidden gaze of curiosity with a happy one of your own.

"i'm making flower crowns! well, practicing to, at least..." you let out a breath of air, closing your eyes. "i've never really made them for anyone else, but a lot of the kids from qingce village practically begged me to make them one after they saw the one i made the other day." you gestured to your head, where a slightly wilted and messy flower crown laid atop.

xiao followed you down the path to the inn, keeping a respectful distance between the two of you as he quietly listened as you rambled about your day getting the flowers as well as your plans for what to do with them. somewhere along the way, he had moved to take the flowers from your grasp, holding them in his own arms as you continued to talk.

"like i said, i never really made them for anyone else before. i really hope they like it." you sighed, wringing your hands behind your back nervously. you were quiet for the rest of the way when suddenly you stopped in the middle of the road and turned to him excitedly, much to his surprise.

“oh, i know!” you exclaimed, “how about i make you a flower crown? it’ll be good practice for me!” reaching over to grasp a bundle of flowers from his arm, you clutched the bundles of qingxins against your chest and gave him a fervent look. xiao didn't miss a beat, continuing to walk past you with the other flowers in arm.

“i have no need for such a thing.”

xiao had initially turned you down quite bluntly, doubting the practicality of flowers woven together with a piece of wire. what use would that be, even outside of battle? it would only get in the way. however, his resolve undeniably wavered when he turned back and saw the slight pout forming on your lips, causing his heart to clench ever the slightest.

he had once claimed to have no desire—adepti had no need for such mortal ideals, he had said. yet there was a part of him that felt the need to see to your happiness, even if that meant allowing you to wiggle your way into the distance he tried to desperately to keep between anyone.

“though if you insist,” xiao cleared his throat, averting his gaze away almost shyly when he noticed your expectant gaze, “i will accompany you while you make it.”

the adeptus then found himself standing post under a nearby tree for the next few hours, quietly observing you.

“mm…not bad.” he nodded, eyes flitting over the flower crown, hesitant to say anything else. it was a bit out of place, but it still held together nonetheless.

without warning, you crouched in front of him, carefully placing the flower crown atop his head, adjusting it so that it fit soundly against his dark locks. all words of argument left his train of thought, eyes widened as he looked up at you, not daring to move as you brush a stray strand of hair away from his face. you failed to notice the way he stiffened under the administration of your gentle touch.

he wasn’t used to it—the way your fingertips danced across his head lightly as they rearranged the flower crown, nor the way that you smiled at him so warmly that he thought his heart might burst. he couldn’t help but feel so vulnerable under someone’s mercy.

however, he couldn’t find it in him to mind. not when it was you.

stepping back to admire your work, you hummed happily to yourself. without a doubt, xiao was already quite handsome alone with his sharp amber gaze and his dark locks, but the flower crown gave him a look of gentleness and elegance that he didn’t seem to normally have. it made him quite adorable.

“it fits you.” you beamed at him, clasping your hands together with a pleased expression. he huffed, as if he found the whole thing unbelievable—a flower crown to be fitting for adeptus like him? a killing machine? it was too absurd to be true. but when you looked at him like that…

xiao couldn’t help but avert his gaze and crossing his arms against his chest, feigning indifference. he fought the urge to squirm or simply disappear into thin air under your affectionate gaze, feeling the tips of his ears grow warm with bashfulness.

he wasn't sure when or how you managed to worm your way into his defenses. he never allowed himself to grow attached to someone, much less have a human as a companion. but he knew that the bond that he had cultivated with you was too strong to sever now—not that he'd ever dream of doing such a thing.

he let out a scoff, feeling his heart flutter at the sight of you staring at him so softly.

“…you truly have no respect for the adepti.”

It’s during your trip through Dragonspine that you meet him; unknowingly, you settle into the camp which belonged to no other than Albedo himself, making yourself at home at the surprisingly well-kept camp for the time being, assuming that it had been deserted by past adventurers. So imagine how surprised Albedo is to see you leaned up against the wall of the camp, curled into yourself as you attempt to keep warm—you wake up with a coat covering you and the sound of slight clinking from the test tubes that Albedo was messing around with. Once he sees you awake, he says he’ll take you back to wherever you came from once he’s finished this particular piece, gesturing to the unfinished canvas laying beside him, but is pleasantly shocked to hear you say that you were just passing through, looking for some inspirations for future art pieces. The two of you become well-acquainted, but not without close inspection and a few experiments—just a few! Headcanon that he calls your “failed” cooking products during your time with him “experiments” that haven’t been perfected yet just to make you feel a bit better about it :’)

It definitely still shocks him a bit everytime you come to him with a cat in your arms, teary-eyed as you mumble to him about how you just didn’t understand how a creature this cute could possibly exist—He’s quite amused by this actually, and takes the opportunity to hold you close to his chest and murmur in your ear how he thought you were much, much cuter. In all seriousness though, it’s a hit-or-miss when he tries to comfort you. There are times where he can comfort you surprisingly well, and just has you sit in his lap until you calm down while he whispers comforting words into your ears (he’s a big brother figure to Klee, he definitely has some experience on this kind of stuff)—and there are other times where he attempts to gift you a piece he’s been working on to help cheer you up, not knowing that he’d make you cry in the process because of how thoughtful he was—He’ll put that in his observations next time. Albedo, sweetie, this is your S/O we’re taking about, not an experiment T-T

The nature dates the two of you would have,, just the two of you (and a LOT of art supplies), venturing into different biomes together—honestly, what could be better for you two? There’s no set destination when it comes to the two of you, and you’ll often be gone for many months at a time, just exploring wherever the wind takes you. It’s quite an exhilarating experience as well; an adventure with Albedo is never dull. Many scrapped works of his means many, many severely disfigured creations chasing after the two of you as you scramble to gather your things and make a run for it—By the time you come back, you’re missing more than half of the supplies you packed beforehand just because you couldn’t pick them up on time (I honestly can’t blame you though, I would run if there was a a hilichurl with stick legs chasing after me too.) On the bright side, you’ve come back with a variety of different paintings and drawings of the flora and fauna you encountered during the trip, which sports a large number of mushroom and cacti works :)

The two of you probably stumble upon each other in the forest, with you on your way to a popular spot for stargazing and him doing his daily rounds in his “territory”. He’s extremely cautious of you when you first meet, but his nerves ease down slightly when you offer him a goody as a peace-treaty—he offers to escort you to wherever your heading and few words are spoken on the way there. However, he can tell through your short-spoken, polite words that you are genuine, and not a threat at all. The two of you part ways, but he finds himself visiting that spot frequently just to search for you, and you’re always there—it became tradition for the two of you to sit together, just watching the stars, with him listening to you talk about the current starmaps and celestial events. Regarding your often changes of style, he was extremely confused for the first few times—you smelled the same to him, but you looked,, different? Once to you explain it to him though, he won’t mind it—he wonders if he can change the color of his hair with the juice of crushed wolfhook.

Razor isn’t a huge fan of large crowds, as it can get a bit overwhelming for him—however, this happens to work out perfectly for the both of you! The two of you would much rather hang out in a peaceful, secluded place that’s away from the loud noises and chaos that places like the city would bring. You’re often found together on a hilltop, or really any place in nature, especially at nighttime. Now, Razor doesn’t have much prior knowledge about space science or the stars in general, but he does know that he really, really likes stargazing with you—something about just laying on top of the grass while looking up at the glimmering stars in the sky is just,, relaxing to him, especially when he sees the familiar smile you wear when you’re outside with the stars (plus, it reminds him of the first time you met). He’d even take off his cloak for you to sit on, just in case you don’t want to get dirty (don’t worry, he runs extremely warm, so he won’t get cold!) He’s also a great listener, so you’re able to rant and ramble about space science as much as you’d like to him and he’ll listen eagerly, maybe even remember a few things for the future to impress you!

He’s a big fan of your baking, whether you’re “good” at it or not—he always peers behind your shoulder, silencing hinting for you to give him a sample of whatever you’re making. He visibly wilts when you tell him he has to wait until they’re done, but gets really happy when you go to him first to let him try it—if he had a tail, it would be wagging a mile a minute :’) Gardening with him is,, interesting to say the least; he tries his best, he really does—but it’s hard for him. He’s curious about every plant you bring in, and will end up “investigating” each one to make sure they’re safe—and don’t let him plant any by himself either as much as he wants to,, he tends to do it very messily, and if you like things neat and perfect, you’re better off doing it yourself haha.
