Mateo skims the shelf, hoping one of the many books will catch his eye. Some of the classics she mentioned have titles that are vaguely familiar. Things he’d been assigned to read in school and proceeded to struggle through in the weeks that followed. Nancy swears they’re excellent but he still veers away from them. Maybe he would save them for later. See how he does with something that doesn’t dredge up memories of bad grades and taking tests first.

It may have taken a while but here it is!

He’s antsy. He can’t help it. She had asked him to stay with her so she definitely wanted him there, but he couldn’t quite figure out why. He thinks about going for a run but doesn’t want to leave. He doesn’t want to turn on a movie because he’s not sure how distracting it would be while she was reading. He wishes he had packed better, perhaps brought a game to play but he hadn’t even considered it. So, as a last resort, he starts cleaning. Nancy wasn’t exactly a messy person, but he tidies up as best as he can because he can’t sit still. She doesn’t even notice what he’s up to until he asks her where she keeps the vacuum.

“Why are you cleaning my apartment?” She finally pulls her eyes away from her book and is now giving him a concerned look.

Mateo shrugs. “Just something to do.”

“You’re bored.”

“I’m not bored, I’m just not very good at not doing something.”

“So what do you do?” Mateo asks.

“Mostly aerial work, the aerial hoop is my favorite, but I’m well trained in most disciplines.”

“She better be, she teaches aerial arts at the Sanctuary Theater and she’s also a top-notch physical therapist, she’s been treating my shoulder since I moved back to Vegas.”

“You can stop singing my praises now, my meeting is over and it’s starting to weird me out.” Nancy glances at her watch. “Besides, you’re about to be late for your appointment.”

“Shoot,” TK jumps up from the table. “I won’t be gone long, Mateo keep her company, don’t let her leave the country without me.” He calls as he jogs off.

This is from my completed as of yesterday fic, Never Too Old, aka the swimming fic -

“Come on bud, where’d you go?” TK called as he went upstairs. “Popular guy like you, they’re asking for you outside.” His eyes were scanning the kitchen when he saw Mateo.

TK mouthed, “Jonah?” and pointed down at the kitchen cabinet. Mateo knew that Jonah could still see him and covered his mouth with his hand to fake a yawn, giving the tiniest fraction of a nod at the same time.

Tk in turn nodded back and loudly said, “Alright, I’m going outside, see if you snuck out there behind me.” He made loud steps like he was walking away; Mateo could see he had opened and slammed the door and was waiting over there.

Not “Only my reading of canon is correct” or “Interpretations are subjective and all valid” but a secret third thing, “More than one interpretation can be valid but there’s a reason your English teacher had you cite quotes and examples in your papers, you have to have a strong argument that your interpretation is actually supported by the text or it is just wrong and I’m fine with telling you it’s wrong, actually.”

“Nance. Nancy.” A soft voice whispered above her, cutting through the dream where red painted everything and she had her best friend yelling at her, accusing her. Blaming her.

Nancy’s eyes flew open a split second before she sat ramrod straight, Mateo flying back in surprise.
