An Open Plea to Alyssa Milano and the Hollywood Industry in Georgia

While it is important to state from the outset of this discourse that I agree with your premise that the right of a woman to do with her body as she sees fit should and is her choice alone. Her choice should remain between her and her God. Furthermore physicians’ practices should not be encumbered by unnecessary legislation, especially laws created to govern medicine in a legislature where very few medical degrees are represented.  I feel it is important to draw your collective attention to a few points before you pull out of Georgia or before you cry out for members of the sporting and entertainment industry to desert our state.  

First and foremost, a withdrawal of the industry would harm the people of Georgia, the people your political agendas supports, the poor and the minorities.  The poorer people of Georgia have had little to nothing to do with this bill, but what will happen should the entertainment industry pull out is that our state will lose, not just the tax revenue, something I will address in a later paragraph, but the thousands of people that have relocated to Georgia from your own industry, most of which are moderate or liberal.  This is important because Georgia is arguably a purple state now and had the last Gubernatorial election been an actual fair election we would have a Democrat at the helm of our government. Georgia desperately needs the people from the entertainment and sports worlds as citizens and their continued economic and moral support to continue our journey toward a fair election system.  We need your industry to “invade” Georgia with thought, vote, and population to demand paper ballots, equal access to the ballot box, and laws that forbid the ridiculous conflict of interest that we saw in the last election.  

This influx of moderate to liberal voters could grant that we can put a democrat in Georgia’s senate seat in Washington in 2020.  I need not stress how important it is that we elect intelligent and thoughtful people to the senate.  We can not allow reaction to be the rudder of those that would resist this nationalistic and racist cloud that now hovers over our nation.  We must have higher minded people to undo the “nuclear” option and the divisiveness that has been caused by the “conservative judges at any cost” attitude displayed by the “GOP” leadership.  We must return to a civility where members of both parties engage in discourse that results in compromise.  It matters very little where this division started but Ronald Reagan (GOP) was great friends with Tip O’Neil (Democrat Speaker of the House) and we must strive for that environment.  It may well prove that for our nation’s sake it becomes important not to demand justice of those in the administration but to extend mercy to those that supported it.  This kind of thoughtfulness is mandatory for our nation to heal and for us to drive the nationalists and white supremacists back und the rocks from which they came.  So, I implore you to consider this as you move forward.

Now, the taxes that the state will lose could also have dire political ramifications.  The man who currently sits in the Governor’s office has already demonstrated his inability to manage money properly except to his own benefit, so the shortage in revenue would mean serious budgetary cuts.  Please do not allow yourself the luxury of thinking that it would hurt the governing officials that have voted for this law. No, it will result in further cuts in healthcare in the rural areas.  This is an area that is already seriously strapped and because we don’t have an expansion of Medicaid to help the people in these areas, there are counties where there is no gynecological or obstetric health  care available.  In one county there is an MRI imaging company that had patients coming from at least eight Georgia counties.  The wait time for an MRI can exceed a month, and in some cases that time is crucial.  

In 2015 the number of nonwhite live births exceeded those of white births by approximately 55,000.  What that should tell you is that there is a shift in demographics approaching Georgia (as in most Southern states) and education and economic opportunities are vital to train these new leaders.  The Hollywood industry and the arts have always been vital to this process.  We simply can not allow the “old guard” to steep this new generation with so much resentment that the reactionary politics continues the idiotic pendulum swing we have been witnessing since the mid 90s.  If we truly want a fair election that will wash out part of this legislature that has passed this bill, and the governor sworn to sign it we need MORE artistic industry and monies to shift the voting in the state of Georgia to blue from red.  If we fail to take the White House and the Senate in this next election, the judiciary will be forever changed, and the nationalistic cloud that looms over our nation will pull our country off of the world stage and back into the nineteenth Century.  

Ms. Milano and others, I beg you, play the long game here and out maneuver the nationalists, turn Georgia blue, true blue.  The future of our country and certainly the future of Georgia could greatly depend on what you decide to do in this situation.  Please understand, I understand how distasteful it is to deal with these people, I was raised by two democrats in Alabama, but winning at the voting booth and changing the dynamic is the only way that we can change the environment and show they younger generation that there is a better way than hate.  Thank you for reading this.
