New seasons of SoCal Connected, Lost LA on KCET
"SoCal Connected" season preview. Photos: KCET.
KCET's flagship and award-winning news program "SoCal Connected" will return next month for a ninth season — with a new format focusing on long-form investigative documentary pieces. The station also is bringing back "Lost LA," the innovative half-hour show hosted by Nathan Masters that ties the city we live in now to past events and trends that shaped the place.
The latest refresh of the SoCal Connected form will devote each half hour to long-form dives into single topics, documentary style. The executive producer is investigative reporting veteran Karen Foshay.
The first episode, airing for the first time on Tuesday Oct. 9 at 8 p.m., will go inside local newsrooms to explore the past year of intense disruption in local journalism. The Los Angeles Times is a main focus, and it looks as if they interviewed new Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong for the piece. (I was interviewed as well — not sure if my little part is included in the piece.)
To stay on the local media topic, KCET will also re-air the award-winning Peter Jones documentary, "Inventing LA: The Chandlers and Their Times," later the same night, at 9 p.m.
The season's second SoCal Connected episode, scheduled for Oct. 16, will tell the story of a Dorsey High School athlete, Antonio Carrion, who the show's materials say "was on a path to the NFL but instead became the poster child for what’s wrong with L.A.’s mental health system." Later shows in the season will look at how gerrymandering by local politicians has been used to dilute minority voting power, at profiteering on diseases, and the new California normal of more frequent and severe wildfires, among other topics. View the trailer above.
The SoCal Connected team this season also includes Vince Beiser, Robert McDonnell, Katie Cooper, Gina Pollack, Stuart Sender, Tori Edgar, David Egen, Michael Ray, and Peggy Holter.
Lost LA will follow SCC at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. The show is hands down the best local history program on LA television (not that there's much competition in that space.) Masters, who works for the USC Libraries, is able to draw on the library's photos and document archives to bring stories to life.
It looks as if the first episode is about Yosemite National Park and its conflicts between nature and people.
Previous episodes are airing in the 8:30 Tuesday slot until the new season begins. They also are on the web at KCET.org.

LaVar Ball rips Luke Walton, claims son Lonzo better than LeBron James
LaVar Ball rips Luke Walton, claims son Lonzo better than LeBron James originally appeared on nbcsportsbayarea.com
One could be biased when it comes to their own children. This turns into an extreme case when talking about LaVar Ball.
Speaking of LaVar, his Wednesday interview on ESPN's Undisputed might leave you shaking your head.
He threw some shade at Lakers coach Luke Walton saying: "Doesn't matter how many players you get. If you don't got the coach, you out of luck."
LaVar then said the Lakers couldn't win a championship without his son, Lonzo -- despite the team possessing four-time NBA MVP LeBron James. LaVar pushed the envelope with this statement:
OK then ...
A bit bold, and the timing around the NBA trade deadline couldn't be more coincidental. Warriors fan have to love all the drama surrounding the Lakers.

Anthony Vaccarello lights up Paris Fashion Week
Anthony Vaccarello has really come into his own at Saint Laurent. We know his penchants, that of the molto sexy, shorter than short brigade, but this season there was more than meets the eye originality.
The show began with a series of looks inspired by former Yves Saint Laurent muse Betty Catroux, a blond vixen with side swept hair, shouldering mannish coats and black sunglasses. The outerwear here was superb, all bold shoulder, big lapels and confident proportions. They wrapped, instead of drowned the models, and you could imagine their hand in pocket sashay could walk the looks off the runway directly into the street.
The first hint of colour came fifteen looks in, with a purple Panama hat, but this was all about embroideries and lavishly beaded dresses and jackets, worn with Ostrich feathered boots or leather knee-highs.
The starting point of this season's silhouette began with the shoulder, and in a preview Vaccarello told Vogue it took six months to get the proportions correct, which saw the padding in jackets and dresses extended by two centimetres. In a sea of mannish tailoring this season, Vaccarello's proposition effortlessly captured the attention of his audience.
In the next act, there was a smattering of men's looks, all black and white tailoring, with an occasional leopard fur stole, red leather biker or lamé gold striped shirting thrown in for good measure.
It was the third act of neons and black light that cemented the show as Vaccarello creating his own legacy at Saint Laurent. Models walked behind a wall of glass, reminiscent of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Room mirror installations, and while the audience strained to see the final exits, the show imagery depict a wave of fluorescent micro dresses, mostly one-shouldered and feathery, lit up with a sunglasses, shoes and belts. Instagram lit up, too, with Saint Lauren't show finale, as will its stores next season.

Related Closes $630 Million Loan for The Grand Project
Rendering of The Grand, the Related Co.'s downtown Los Angeles mixed-use development designed by Frank Gehry
Real estate firm Related Cos. closed a $630 million construction loan from Deutsche Bank for its long-delayed $1 billion The Grand project in downtown L.A.
The New York-based real estate firm is developing the $1 billion Frank Gehry designed mixed-use that calls for residential, retail and entertainment complex on Grand Avenue in downtown. Related won the contract to build The Grand back in 2004 but the Great Recession caused the project to be delayed.
Official site preparation begins this month with a formal groundbreaking ceremony to follow in the upcoming months, the company said. In January, Related selected Century City-based Aecom as construction manager for The Grand.
The Grand is a public-private partnership guided by the L.A. Grand Avenue Authority which comprises the County of Los Angeles, the City of Los Angeles, and two other city agencies.
The mixed-use development includes 215,000 square feet of retail space and a 20-story, 309-room Equinox hotel. It plans to have a 39-story tower for 436 residential units as well.
“I am pleased that The Grand has closed financing and we are moving to the next stage of this development,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, chair of L.A. Grand Avenue Authority said in a statement.
The project is expected to be completed in 2021.

In a new book, James Fell says 'ah-HA!' moments are what can really change your life
I was out for a run on Christmas Eve and thinking about how much I was looking forward to getting drunk while cooking up a feast the next day. Sudden insight struck me that the anticipation of inebriation is not what the true meaning of Christmas is all about. It didn’t change me in that moment, but I began to think, what if I took a year off? What would I be capable of if I wasn’t drinking? I came to the realization that sobriety could be an adventure. It wasn’t just about quitting but trying something new. The “cons” of change don’t disappear, they just lose importance.

We didn't have nights like this at Lakers – Zubac after Clippers win
Ivica Zubac said he did not have "nights like this" with the Los Angeles Lakers after the Los Angeles Clippers' win over the New York Knicks.
Zubac and the Clippers celebrated a 128-107 victory against the lowly Knicks in NBA action on Sunday.
Croatian Zubac and team-mate Michael Beasley were traded by the Lakers to the Clippers in a deal for Mike Muscala in February.
And Zubac – who recorded seven points, 11 rebounds and five assists against the Knicks – appears to be enjoying life with the Clippers after he said: "That's how we gotta be.
"When I was with the Lakers, we didn't have nights like this. Every game was a close game for us, but now with the Clippers, this team is really locked in, every possession against every team."
Zubac is averaging career highs in points per game (8.6) and rebounds per game (5.4) in 2018-19.
The Clippers have won their last two games and sit seventh in the Western Conference standings with a 36-29 record. They will face the Lakers on Monday.

You find my missing dog, I’ll give you my one-bedroom trailer: Arizona man
You find my missing dog, I’ll give you my one-bedroom trailer: Arizona man
“I’m willing to give the land, the trailer, the workshop, all of it free and clear, no questions asked. I just want to have Jenny back”

An apparent believer in the proverb “home is where the heart is,” Arizona resident Eddie Collins is offering a one-bedroom home to anyone who retrieves his beloved missing dog.
The Arizona man last saw his two-year-old chihuahua, Jenny, at a Circle K gas station and convenience store in April.
Collins told local news outlets that he has “looked everywhere” and tried offering a cash reward before deciding instead to offer a one-bedroom trailer home in Benson, Arizona.
The property just east of Tucson includes a trailer plus a tract of land and a detached workshop.
There were no one-bedroom trailer homes listed on homes.com in Benson, Arizona, but two-bedroom trailers ranged in price between $27,000 and $54,000.
“I’m willing to give the land, the trailer, the workshop, all of it free and clear, no questions asked,” Collins said. “I just want to have Jenny back.” [Inman] – Mike Seemuth

1,000 brooding octopuses found off California coast
Scientists exploring the sea floor off the coast of central California found more than 1,000 octopuses tucked between rocks with their tentacles inverted and covering clusters of white eggs —a pose common among brooding females.
Ocean Exploration Trust biologists made the discovery last week nearly 2 miles (3 kilometers) below the surface off the coast of Monterey.
The cluster of octopuses glowing in the dark was captured on Oct. 23 by a submersible’s camera during the first dive of the Nautilus, a vessel exploring the Davidson Seamount in NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Researchers say this kind of aggregation of deep-sea octopuses has been reported only once before, when a smaller group of about 100 were spotted brooding eggs in the ocean off Costa Rica.

At Mon-Li in Malibu, a “Cocktail Chef” Is Blending Bevs and Haute Cuisine
When Matthew Biancaniello talks about water mint foraged in Topanga Canyon or seaweed plucked from the island of Saint Lucia, it’s difficult to tell if he’s talking about ingredients on a plate or in a glass. It’s no surprise, considering the self-taught barman has forged a career in L.A. around the invitation to “eat your drink” (he even cowrote a book with that name); he showcases herbal, vegetal, fruit-forward, and highly seasonal cocktails that sometimes look like salads in a glass. Now, after years of pop-ups at local bars and restaurants, he’s opened a place of his own. In true Biancaniello fashion, it blurs many lines.
The 12-seat “liquid omakase” bar sits in a quiet corner of the sprawling Calamigos Beach Club, an offshoot of the ranch resort hidden in the rugged Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu. Most locals know the building as the former BeauRivage restaurant, an eye-catching white villa along Pacific Coast Highway. Although technically a part of the beach club, Mon-Li is open to the public, or at least to anyone able to snag tickets to one of two seatings on the nights it’s operating (currently Thursday through Saturday).
Inside the tasting room, bouquets of dried sage, flowering chives, and Thai basil—items found at farmers’ markets, in home gardens, or along creeks and trails in the hills—hang from rustic wood beams. Along the walls, glass jars are filled with dried cactus fruit, Biancaniello’s famous nocino (a dark liqueur made from green walnuts), and ash from the Thomas Fire that ravaged Ventura County in 2017. “I’m going to use that in hot buttered rum this winter,” he says casually.
Biancaniello is both barman and chef, a mad scientists of sorts, creating drinks in little oil-and-vinegar cruets or as liquor-soaked sponges atop sea urchin shells. There’s a Persian mulberry old-fashioned with almond liqueur, smoked sage tequila, cactus pear vinegar, and hay beer he brewed himself. A layered cocktail might involve three white vermouths infused with romaine lettuce, Parmesan rind, and anchovies—a sippable Caesar salad. There’s no ingredient he won’t try to turn into a cocktail, and no spirit he won’t try turning into food.
Once the two-hour, $150-plus experience ends, plan on calling a car. Although many of the cocktails are low in alcohol, after 12 courses and then some, it adds up. The menu will change every month, but this being Biancaniello, anything can happen day to day. Riffing is sort of his thing. “Can you imagine an uni shooter you can’t share with anyone because it’s one bite, and it’s based on what you told me you liked?” he thinks aloud. “Everyone’s experience will be different at the same time.”

Zalando looks to Alibaba for connected retail inspiration
Robyn Turk
|
Tuesday, November 06 2018
European fashion e-tailer Zalando has looked to Alibaba and its New Retail concept for inspiration with its new “Connected Retail” platform. Zalando has set forth a plan to launch 600 physical stores by the end of the year, which will connect in-store inventory to the ecommerce site, allowing shoppers to order online and have purchases delivered from the store rather than a warehouse for a speedier delivery process. In addition to allowing a more convenient shopping experience, this system prevents costs from the inventory and fulfilment process.
"Platforms such as Alibaba and JD.com have largely dissolved the boundaries between online and offline," said Zalando VP of direct-to-consumer Carsten Keller in a press release. "I see the technological dynamism in the offline market as a preliminary step towards greater integration of online trading with stationary trading. We see retailers investing more and more in data networking in order to better understand their customers."
Alibaba utilizes omnichannel features to enhance the consumer’s shopping experience. Similarly to how its “Fashion AI” concept store streamlines the retail process through the use of intelligent devices, Zalando has launched an artificial intelligence system to ease its shoppers’ use of the ecommerce platform alongside the upcoming physical store locations.
Called the Algorithmic Fashion Companion, Zalando has created a virtual stylist designed with an algorithm that selects ideal outfit for each customer. The styling tool is equipped “with styling expertise,” using a customer’s most recent purchases to develop and suggest outfit ideas integrating the garments the customer has already purchased.
"Customers often tell us that they find it difficult to combine items and that they appreciate it to get inspiration and fashion advice," said product manager Marta Skassa in a press release. The styling algorithm service is available to Zalando shoppers for no extra cost.

Bahador Mahboubi sued for refusing to remove plastic surgeon’s Rodeo Drive sign
Bahador Mahboubi sued for refusing to remove plastic surgeon’s Rodeo Drive sign
Doctor complains a competitor is trying to steal his business and blames Mahboubi
421 N. Rodeo Drive (Credit: Google Maps and iStock)
UPDATED on Jan. 8, 2018, at 5:27 p.m.: Beverly Hills landlord Bahador Mahboubi is caught up in a dispute between two competing plastic surgeons with offices at one of his Rodeo Drive properties.
Plastic Surgeon Lloyd Krieger claims that Emil Kohan, his competitor and neighbor at 421 N. Rodeo Drive, is trying to steal customers by imitating his business’s name, according to a suit filed in U.S. District Court. Krieger names Mahboubi as a defendant in the case and accuses him of being complicit.
Krieger claims that Kohan named his practice Rodeo Aesthetics Plastic Surgery, moved into his former office, and refuses to take down a sign outside for Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery. Krieger further alleges that he moved the longtime office of his practice, Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery, from one suite to another in the building in January 2018.
Kohan, he said, is misleading potential clients into thinking that Rodeo Drive Aesthetics Plastic Surgery is a successor business or affiliate of his own practice. Krieger claims “existing and potential patients” have been confused, mistaken or deceived by the signage.
A spokesperson for Kohan denied Tuesday that the name of the doctor’s practice is Rodeo Aesthetics Plastic Surgery. “It is not anywhere on his Instagram, website, Google page, or Yelp,” the spokesperson said. “The case has no validity.”
But his fellow plastic surgeon isn’t the only person Krieger is pointing a finger at. Mahboubi’s company, Rodeo Collection Ltd., he said, also refused to remove the signs, and wouldn’t put Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery on the directories in the building, leading to further confusion for potential patients.
Krieger is seeking monetary damages and attorney fees from the Iranian businessman, who is named in three of the five complaints leveled in the suit.
Mahboubi moved to Beverly Hills from Iran in the late 1980s and built an empire of retail real estate with capital he amassed in Iran through a chewing gum enterprise. His success earned him the nickname the “chewing gum king” from the Los Angeles Times in 1993.

Metro Board Approves Final EIR for Link Union Station - Without an Above-Grade Concourse
Metro's Board of Directors has voted to certify the final environmental impact report for the Link Union Station project, cementing plans to construct an expanded passenger concourse and run-through tracks crossing the US-101 Freeway.
The revised project, as revealed earlier this month at an open house at Union Station, eliminates a proposed above-grade passenger concourse in favor of an expansion of the existing pedestrian passageway which passes beneath the rail yard. The currently 30-foot-wide corridor would be widened to 140 feet, creating additional space for passenger circulation, amenities, and retail.
The estimated cost of the expanded passageway is $2.3 billion, representing a substantial discount relative to the approximately $2.8-billion price tag of the scuttled above-grade alternative. However, Metro has not identified funding for this component of the Link Union Station project at this point in time.
Link Union Station's signature element, the proposed run-through tracks which would span across the US-101 Freeway, has $950 million in funding commitments. A presentation filed with the final environmental impact report details several design options for the bridge structure.
Completion of the run-through tracks and expanded passenger concourse will allow for Union Station to provide through-routing for Metrolink and Amtrak trains, and potential future high-speed rail service. Metro has previously estimated that the facility will see up to 200,000 daily passengers by 2040, double from the 100,000 transit riders that it sees today.
The news was first reported by Streetsblog.
