Frame and sculptures have been installed. Having fixed the bent leg by securing the legs to the floor w blue tack and canvas wood things.

Exhibition prep









Exhibition prep,
Am going to house my ‘communication’ sculptures inside the box thing.
The frame I built has a leg which is not flush downwards. I think this is due to unsavoury tensile forces resulting from my bad 'counter sinking'.
Not big issue though, will use small wooden wedges and blue tack to realign frame leg next week.
I have thoroughly enjoyed learning new practical skills and am looking forward to build some more funky box things in the future.

Some photos from 'Moving Image' : photography and it's actions at the Camberwell Space
I am fucking grumpy and probably cus I'm not getting much sleep but as of writing this I feel like my negative view on this is still valid. Who knows, maybe I would have loved this exhibition on a Thursday instead of today.
(attached is a screenshot of a stupidly written, fairly inaccessible description of the exhibition just to show you what annoyed me in the first place) also what the fuck, I thought I write long sentences but this is a joke.
This felt like “we want to show a range of stuff but let’s do it all in one exhibition because we only have one gallery booked for a short time”. Not a bad idea but a better contextualisation should have followed.
Pretty photos yes, did I think the exhibition was good? Not really. I didn't like the printed screenshots on different articles especially the "adult ADHD is similar to bi polar" thing. Yeah I get the showing of this was not agreeing with the article but this just triggered me a little bit and maybe that's what whoever put it there wanted to do. A little gratuitous if you ask me.
Maybe warn or just like talk about something more related to the exhibition like 'moving image' or (photographic climates?) which I expected to see? Yeah I can't always expect to see what I expect to see but in this case I wanted to see what I expected to see so yeah.
I disliked the 'Hypotheses' page thing (4th photo). It tried to make rather pathetic statements sound factual like there was some legitimate authority behind the text.
Anyway great shots of buildings there and that weird yellow gold thing at the back!

'Tracing Movement' by Heauge Yang @ SLG
Was in a mood today, probably because was tired so my little review is gonna reflect that and not be that inspired or long.
I don't understand why there wasn't much said about the geometrical drawings/collages. They were remeniscant of Emma Kunz's 'drawings' and so I couldn't help but connect the forms with healing and spirit.
What I did like was the range of mediums and ideas. Large-scale 3d movey things (will post video in a sec) with their Venetian blinds etc, razor blades, drawings (even on the floor wowie) and photographs all commenting on movement?
The body of work shown was rather diverse and if I remember correctly they were from different times in Yang's career. This made the 'tracing movement' thing unclear as yes I could see movement being traced but the ideas felt only communicated at surface level. Maybe by picking one or two bodies and exhibiting/explaining more would have been better? Idk, maybe that was the intention. The chronological movement of Yang's work even?

I am thinking of positioning these sculptures in a computer-esc(?) configuration.
Computers are all about parts communicating information to eachother and each sculpture describes a different type of communication.

My thoughts on “Resist: Things Artists Do When Learning To Teach” at the Freelands Foundation
I was attracted to this exhibition due to my interest in education and that act of educating.
Being reintroduced to arts education from which I hadn’t studied since I was in year 9, was a decent sized challenge and still is. The requirement for trusting oneself and being self directed was something I never really had to deal with in terms of education I was used to receiving. Being fairly self critical already, becoming the thinker, maker and judge of my own educational path and means to which the path is laid, has been difficult but I feel I have reached a stage where I can trust myself to have confidence in my work.
Anyway this exhibition was put up by UCL’s arts education department and does what it says in its title. As I’m trying to only discuss what I think is relevant to my work here, I’m not going to go too far in describing the many other interesting works put on by the students of this department.
The first and most memorable installation (by Siobhan Fennessey) places you sat in a chair covered by panels on your sides and front to obscure view. A desk with headphones, a pen and small ‘exam’ booklets are within the ‘isolation booth’. The headphones give you instructions (read by children) on where to mark your page with the pen.
After the 10 figures have been drawn by yourself, you mark(out of 5?) each figure-question by comparing it with the figures given to the children feeding you the information through the headphones. Unfortunately I lost my copy of the booklet, which is good because I drew my figures poorly, (I did score full marks on the flower question though :))). The installation did bring back a nostalgia for school, but I don’t miss it.
The other piece that helped me think of the idea for ‘communication’ was by Rhiannon Jones. She created a 3d map that traced students paths to their lessons all of which were enforced by a one way system. We had a one way system introduced towards the end of school and it just forced students to be late and created choke points at inconvenient locations. I was thrilled someone was showing how stupid these things are (hopefully that was the intention). The different colours of string and intersecting between lines worked as a wonderfully simple and well communicated way of presenting this kind of information.
The exhibition did provoke an emotional response with feelings of nostalgia for the overarching mood of “this is pointless, we are managed by stupid rules because the older people in charge are too lazy to fix them” that hung over my school experience. I’m sure there is a word or fancy english phrase for this but I can't think of it right now.
Anyway to conclude, I see teaching as a discussion and/or communication of information between entities. It is with this thought I want to produce a few sculptures that embody what I see communication to be. Information is lovely and abstract as hell (or not?) but we are people and what’s important is the communication of information between us because it gives us knowledge and knowledge is power after all?
Note- I am aware teaching is not just some communication of bit like information, there is hopefully lots of love and appreciation for life itself too along the way. I just want to break things down to what fundamentally teaching is (or my shoddy/naive idea of what teaching is) for the sake of my project.

Communication

Unsure whether this construction had a functional purpose (being part of a larger machine) or if it was constructed by Nelson himself. I am inclined to believe it is a construction for the exhibition as I find the combination of timber and concrete(?) unusual since they are suited best in different ambient conditions. The apparent lack of a clearly defined machine/system here is a stark contrast to the clearly defined machines and mechanical parts in the other rooms.
The arrangement of the circular rim and beams in this position makes me think of a symbiotic relationship between the two. The form of a beam and circle are quite different but due to their arrangement in relation to each other they are structurally and visually balanced. Simplifying the form, you have two perpendicular planes in the same construction. This drew my eye up the ‘gangway’(beam) and into the centre of circle. The path of my eye studying the object naturally tended to that motion and got me thinking about connecting two ends through a plane that is perpendicular to the length of the ends.
I am beginning to build (maybe 3?) simple sculptures that demonstrate a dialogue/communication between two ends. What is being communicated is the physical and visual information of the connecting ‘beam’. Images of my sculptures will follow.
