The Broken Earth trilogy really did so much like?? Who else is out here with these raw and nuanced takes addressing the full range of how imperialism and oppressive systems affect everyone involved??

Jemisin really covered everything from straight up eugenics (the whole Syl Anagist plotline wtf) to the mental gymnastics those who enforce the system do to rationalize their actions (Schaffa genuinely loving Syen and being hurt that she wouldn’t just hand over her baby to be a magic torture battery like d u d e) to generational trauma and inherited violence (Essun training Nassun the way the Guardians trained her… to protect her from the Guardians).

These books are criminally underrated, or at least they don’t get a fraction as much attention as I would expect on a site like tumblr dot com
