Fund your CME in 2020 with pharmaceutical company grants!
Tumblr media
Pharmaceutical companies (and medical device manufacturers) account for roughly 28% of CME funding. Friends, I believe it’s time you take them up on their offer and apply for a grant to improve your knowledge and skills in 2020.
The first thing you will need to do is find pharma companies which provide grants in your area of specialty. My research has concluded that these are the areas which are funded by the largest number of companies:
Oncology (grants awarded by: Abbvie, Agios, Astellas, Astra Zeneca, Bayer, BHS, Boehringer Ingelheim, Ipsen, Janssen Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Merck, Mylan, Novartis, Pfeizer, Teva, Takeda, Sanofi, Seattle Genetics, Sandoz, GSK, Roche, Lexicon, MSD)
Neurology and Neuroscience (grants awarded by: Abbvie, Acorda, Allergan, Bayer, Biogen, Ipsen, Janssen, LivaNova, Lundbeck, Mallinckrodt, Merck, Mylan, Otsuka, Teva, Takeda, Sanofi, Sandoz, GSK)
Cardiology (grants awarded by: Abbott, BMS, Boehringer Ingelheim, Astellas, AstraZeneca, Janssen, LivaNova, Merck, Mylan, Novartis, Pfeizer, Sanofi)
Diabetes (grants awarded by: AstraZeneca, Bayer, Ipsen, Lilly, Merck, NovoNordisk, Sanofi, Lexicon, MSD)
This is just a taster of the most popular areas of interest for awarding educational grants. I assure you that you will be able to find grants in your specific area.
A web site I found particularly useful for my research into this topic is https://globaleducationgroup.com/CME-Funding. It contains links to the grant sites of each of the companies.
Please note that most grant providers will accept applications which are submitted at least 90 days before your programme of interest starts.
Good luck!

DePuy Synthes has launched the SYMPHONY Occipito-Cervico-Thoracic (OCT) System
youtube
The SYMPHONY System helps streamline procedures and create efficiencies for the surgeon and operating room staff who are treating patients with complex cervical spine disorders.
Guided by research conducted in association with the International Spine Study Group, the SYMPHONY™ System is designed to improve surgeon experience in four key areas:
fixation,
alignment,
targeting
extensions
The range of instrumentation offers options for surgeons to choose from and is compatible with navigation software to aid in targeting in challenging anatomy.
Tumblr media
“The most interesting aspect of the SYMPHONY™ System is its ability to address highly complex needs that we face at the front lines of cervical spine surgery,” said Christopher Ames, MD, Spine Surgeon. “It also takes into account ways to create efficiencies for healthcare systems, making it a truly comprehensive offering.”

Mechanical thrombectomy is a breakthrough in stroke care
Tumblr media
Mechanical thrombectomy is a breakthrough in stroke care for patients with acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion in the anterior circulation. Studies have shown major benefits in increased quality of life for patients, but also in terms of cost efficiency. Its a win-win for both patients and hospitals!
The two most prominent revasculisation devices on the market are  Stryker’s Trevo® Retriever and Medtronic’s Solitaire™ FR revascularization device.
The Solitaire™ revascularization device, featuring Parametric™ design, a unique overlapping stent retriever-based technology, restores blood flow and retrieves clots from occluded blood vessels in the brain for patients experiencing acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to a large vessel occlusion (LVO).The Solitaire device is indicated to reduce stroke-related disability by showing nearly 70% relative improvement in functional outcomes at 90 days in patients suffering LVO.
The thrombectomy procedure is performed using a ballon guide catheter or micro catheter.
The Cello™ Balloon Guide Catheter is a guiding catheter with a silicone distal balloon for flow occlusion. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the Solitaire™ FR Revascularization Device during a mechanical thrombectomy procedure.Large lumen catheter ensures high aspiration force.
The Rebar™ reinforced micro catheter is a single-lumen catheter introduced via a steerable guidewire into the vasculature. Its stainless-steel construction, high kink resistance, and hydrophilic coating help navigate tortuous anatomy and deploy therapeutic agents or contrast media with ease.
