Final Outcome - 

After Looking at the surrealist video and hearing the sound that was used to emphasise each movement that went on in the video I wanted to see what would happen If I were to use a real-life sound of a plane and see how that would affect the video. Overall I think that having the sound of the plane fits it much better than the music because its the idea of taking something everyday so, in this case, the paper and the plane and putting them together, So trying to make the paper plane seem real and change the viewer's perception of the everyday item.

Since I am looking into moving the planes I wanted to get some inspiration of surrealism in video form and found this video in which has a lot of things going on it, but also multiple different reasons if you look into it. For example the start of the video where the man potentially a king is sitting in an empty white space and is fishing you could perceive it that he is fishing for something that just doesn’t exist. , or that as there is nothing around him but while he is in an alternative place than earth. Something that I found interesting with the video was the use of sound in it and how it complimented what was going on for example when the dogs appear you can hear the sound of them running and there harness jingling. This is something that I feel I could add to my videos which would enhance them.

Evaluation Time Base Planes

I think that this edit of the time base has a much better fit to my project than before as it is more simplistic and by combing the two types of footage together it helps emphasise the paper planes. I kept the video in colour as I thought it defiantly to focus the small details of the landscapes I captured. This links much better with the idea of having the landscape on the plane rather than seeing a landscape from a plane is an interesting perspective to play with and think it works quite well in this video format

This screenshot from the making of the video shows how I was able to create the effect that I did what I ended up doing was having a two different clips playing at the same time by putting one above the other shown in the screenshot on the timeline. I then turned down the opacity in the top clip so you are able to see both. 

In this close up of the timeline for one of the videos on the right-hand side is the transition highlighted in yellow which was the circle that went in and out of the old school videos I made, you can also see the audio more in this screenshot.

Evaluation time base Planes

After seeing both of the time based with the old time effect and music on them even though I feel that they work really well together as the planes have a kind of puppet-like effect I feel that these edits don't really connect all that well with anything and so I want to further try something more simplistic also I after these I think that by having it colour will improve it as it helps to show off the detail of the landscapes on the plane.

From reviewing the footage it made me think that to some extent the planes looked like puppets and so I wanted to try and add effects where it would highlight this, so I made the video into an old school feel, changing it to black and white and adding an old camera effect on top of it.

This is the second part of the edited footage that I have made and overall think that by having the paper planes actually move is much more effective than just the still shots. Also, I feel that this footage works well as I feel I was able to get the planes to move without the viewer being able to tell how it is happening which adds to the magic of it and making it even more real. Next, I want to try some kind of effects on the footage or to combine the two together, something that I think will improve the time based too would be some audio as that adds another element to the overall video.

Evaluation

After taking the images of my landscapes made into paper planes I think that they came out really well as you can clearly see the horizon and all of the buildings wrapped around the corners of the plane which is quite effective. With this set of images, I feel that they are quite strong because there is something beautiful looking about having the landscape plastered onto the outside of the plane.

In terms of what paper planes should do they are essentially a moving object, So I want to look further into this and see what it would look like if I did a time-based piece including all of these paper planes with the landscapes printed on them and allowing the paper planes to be moving as if they would normally, this would then add to the effect of trying to take something and change the perception of it as by making the planes move by themselves will be a sense of surrealism as most of the time an object can not move on its own without a force of somekind. So I want to make it so you cannot see how the planes are moving.

Since what I want to do next is something with paper planes I wanted to see peoples views on planes and what you can see from them. This article talks about how not nearly as many people are enthused by looking out of the plane window any more from the first commercial flight. It also talks about what there can be out there when you look saying “Out there are 50 different types of clouds, some filled with more than 500 tonnes of water.” This gives me the inspiration to do something with planes and putting the landscape that I had captured onto in some way almost like showing what the plane has seen rather. Hopefully, this would be an interesting way for the viewer to look at and so changing their perception of how they think about the plane windows and what planes see.

Evaluation of Planes

In terms of the images of the paper planes in the sky I think that I was able to get it to a standard in which they didn’t look that out of place, I think that what helped in some images was that I tried to put some planes behind some of the buildings to give them some depth and make it as if they were flying around. I think that by doing this that it would hopefully challenge how the viewer would see an everyday object in a different situation changing the perception of how they look at it.

Moving On

After doing the experiments of placing the planes into the landscape scenes I had the idea of what might happen if I then used those images and made them into a paper plane itself. The reason I like this idea is that the idea will make it seem that the images on the plane are almost like what the plane has seen itself as it flies around.

Intentions

For my experiments for this photo shoot, I am going to place in some paper planes that I have made into the image to give this idea of taking something quite simple and normal and putting it into a situation that you would never normally see. I want to try and focus on getting the planes to look as realistic as possible in the images as if they really were flying above London.
