Just learned this absolutely delightful bit of etymology:
During the 15th century, the English had an endearing practice of granting common human names to the birds that lived among them. Virtually every bird in that era had a name, and most of them, like Will Wagtail and Philip Sparrow have been long forgotten. Polly Parrot has stuck around, and Tom Tit and Jenny Wren, personable companions of the English countryside, are names still sometimes found in childrenās rhymes. Other human names, however, have been incorporated so durably into the common names that still grace birds as to almost entirely obscure their origin. The Magpie, a loquacious black and white bird with a penchant for snatching shiny objects, once bore the simple name āpie,ā probably coming from its Roman name, āpica.ā The English named these birds Margaret, which was then abbreviated to Maggie, and finally left at Mag Pie. The vocal, crow-like bird called Jackdaw was also once just a ādawā named āJack.āĀ The English also gave their ubiquitous and beloved orange-bellied, orb-shaped, wren-sized bird a human name. The first recorded Anglo-Saxon name for the Eurasian Robin wasĀ ruddoc,Ā meaning ālittle red one.ā By the medieval period, its name evolved to redbreast (the more accurate termĀ orangeĀ only entered the English language when the fruit of the same name reached Great Britain in the 16th century). The English chose the satisfyingly alliterative name Robert for the redbreast, which they then changed to the popular Tudor nickname Robin. Soon enough, the name Robin Redbreast became so identified with the bird that Redbreast was dropped because it seemed so redundant.Ā

Can I say? Even in the most ideal of circumstances I wouldnāt want a homestuck tv show. I have wholeheartedly loved every bit of animation within the comic, and I know we all used to joke about the homestuck anime, and this fandom has made some absolutely beautiful pieces of art. But I wouldnāt want even the most perfect animation.
I think that an adaptation (ideally) has to offer something by the change in medium, has to have some level of meaning to the decision to adapt it. And I think that homestuck is *so much* a product of its medium! The webcomic format that is mostly text based chat logs, the text based rpg styling, the occasional interactivity but maintenance of you as the reader. Im sure that a tv can adapt parts of that but it loses some of the essential charm of homestuck which has always been its characters, just interacting
#anyway that being said I still prob watch at least the first episode HAHA#homestuck#Iāve allllwaayyyss been the kid that thought NO adaptation could ever match up to the source material#and when I was a kid I would refuse to meet the adaptation on its own merit and instead insufferably compare it to the original#and Iām sure there are shades of that still in there#idk thereās something abt homestuck that just makes me feel like a teen again#just a little bit#anyway I do hate to pray on the downfall of a new project but. Iām praying#AND the new wave of fans will all be hazbin hotel teens right? Good lord

Before: After:

š I never thought Iād write something like this⦠But weāve truly lost everything.
We had a simple home ā nothing fancy ā but it was ours. Filled with laughter, memories, and years of hard work. Then, in one moment, it was all gone. Our home was bombed. Reduced to rubble.
Since then, weāve been moving from place to place. No stability. No privacy. No safety. Just trying to survive each day.
We also lost our jobs. Our source of income. Our sense of normal life. Weāre not living ā weāre barely getting by.
This isnāt easy to share. But weāre asking, with all humility, for your help.
We are asking you with all shame to support and stand by us in these difficult circumstances that everyone knows because we lost our home, our work and any stable source of income. Thank you all.

We have been through many wars before, but this war was not like the ones before it. Our lives were turned upside down. We became displaced from one place to another. We are the Anas family, residents of northern Gaza, specifically in the Shujaiya area. In the first week of the war, we fled our home because everyone considered our home to be in a dangerous area. We moved to the Rimal area, specifically in the middle of Gaza. There, we received the news that our home, which contained all our beautiful memories, was bombed. Suddenly, it was gone!!! Just thinking that your home, which you worked hard on and built from scratch and took a lot of your life, was gone in less than a second ! After a while, we left the sands to the Al-Zawaida area because of the heavy shelling. We stayed there for about two weeks, and then the terrorist army asked us to go to Rafah. We actually fled for the fourth time to Rafah and stayed there for two months, some of the most difficult days of our lives, as there was no way or means to live a normal life. šš

had a dream that the hot new meme was to compare the real world politics of baby yoda and non-baby yoda? And every one of them went something like: baby yoda is a borderline socialist USian shitlib but yoda is a straight up treatlerite cryptofash

In my Skip and Loafer re read Iāve been struck by how much Mitsumi is a product of her environment? Like I mean obvs, with Chieriās eternal read of āYou must have been raised in an environment with a lot of loveā [paraphrasing] but like, itās also in Chapter 20 right? How Mitsumi falls down a lot but is able to *pick herself back up*. When Shima doesnāt want her to get hurt we realize heās kinda projecting his feelings about his younger self onto her, cuz he was raised in a tumultuous environment and is only now starting to learn how to want and grow.
and itās like, so often characters (esp protagonists) are great at dealing with situations cuz of their complex and tragic backstories. And there is a point to that! It is in many ways a skill to be accustomed to dealing with the disasters of life. But also like, I enjoy that Mitsumi is a shining example of how it is kinda a superpower to have a strong and stable foundation, and how that makes her a greater presence in everyone elseās life for it. Itās not that Mitsumi doesnāt have problems, but when she does she has the ability to learn and grow without it destroying her self image. Which I think it an amazing superpower in it of itself
#skip to loafer#skip and loafer#god I love Mitsumi soooooo much sheās my girrrlll#I do think that Takamatsu sensei has a tendency to default to āpretty people have problems tooā storylines#But got she just does it so well#And itās like Nao chan was raised in basically the same environment and it was awful for her#Itās about the love and support that one receives that makes them who they are

anyway you should always remember that all those foreigners you see dying on the news are just as real people as you are who have just as much interiority as you do. there is nothing about you that makes you more important and it is by pure chance that you are not in their position. in fact, this holds for all of history. every person, no matter the horror of the fate that befell them, had just as much interiority as you do. i feel like some people haven't fully internalized this.

Iām gonna write down what I liked about The Apothecary Diaries before i excise this thing from my brain completely. Very mild book spoilers I guess? Iāll put it under the cut anyway, just in case
Ultimately the thing I liked most was how I perceived Maomao, as a very low empathy female heroine. I guess I donāt read a ton of books in this type of genre, but I feel like a true low empathy female character, much less a sympathetic heroine, is super rare and I enjoyed experiencing the world from her eyes.
I honestly really loved that there was a really really (really) select few individuals who she would genuinely feel angry or sad on behalf of! When almost anyone else was going thru it she didnāt feel much but like, when her dad was suffering she would get furious on his behalf!! I thought it was really special relationship and showed how much she cared about him, and by extension how little she truly felt for most others. Tbh the only people she really seems to show empathy for are her dad (Loumen, the person she considers her father and who considers her his daughter), and those two palace maid girls? Shisui (my fave!!) and the other one. And maaaaaaybe that girl in season 1 that faked her own death? Even then not really, I think she saw them as kindred spirits more than anything. The fact that even after like ~12 books that list can be counted on one hand means a lot, and makes Maomao an interesting POV character.
Disclaimer that I read the official translations before anyone comes at me for not interpreting based on the Aurikat (sp?) translations. But like, I saw some people in the fan discord talking about she was lying to herself or denying her feelings at times but it super didnāt come off to me like that? Maomao seemed like a very straightforward, borderline aromantic, low empathy, neurodivergent woman. She doesnt feel feelings very strongly, which is a consistent piece of characterization.
Jinshi is fine, tbh. Heās alright as a male lead and the only reason Iāve got 1 eye on the anime is cuz I want to see the lil Moon spirit dance. But like. To be sooooo honest I kinda lost a bit of interest in him once I realized he wasnāt actually a eunuch (so like, book 1 lolol). Thought he was gonna have do some palace intrigue but learned (after truly too many books) he tended to be more the one affected by politics than the one instigating them. Itās a shame, I really wanted to explore gender of a beautiful eunuch attracted to women, but alas, another day.
Last point is that i know I lowkey shit talked Lakan up there but he surprisingly one of the funniest most endearing characters in the entire novel? I didnāt expect to like a deadbeat dad but fuck me, Iām still hopelessly endeared by a wife guy. And the kinda gentle mediation on longing, grief, and rememberance occurring the background of Lakanās story is one of the things I think Iāll remember most about this series. Lakan, Loulanās whole deal, and little low empathy Maomao
#Helloooo random person who enjoyed my post#Iām glad it resonated with you#I have failed to forget abt the ap*thecary d*aries (censored as to by clog up the tags with my opinions)#but Iām glad that my take of aromantic MaoMao resonated with you#anyway Iām abt to rant so thanks for reminding me this post existed#1) i did not realize that aro MaoMao was such an uncommon opinion? Well okay thatās a lie I did#I know what ppl are here for#but like she cares truly so little for most people that it reminds me again of why romance is such a hard genre for me personally because I#if anything I would ship her with Shisui cuz that was like#the first time basically that she seemed invested in a person and borderline sympathetic way#but DO NOT get me wrong Itās only cuz Iām so insanely yuri pilled#Iām literally that Bechdel comic where the lady ships 2 girls who have one (1) conversation#(āWhy are you acting like youāre the only person who read the original Bechdel test comic weāve all seen itā shhhhhh)#2) i said borderline aro cuz at the end of book ~12? Idk it seemed like she was coming around/had resigned herself to the possibility#of a relationship with Jinshi#and like okay so I see a looootttt of interpretation of Maomaoās character as you have to āread between the linesā#and sheās ānot being true about her feelingsā even in her own internal monologue#and sure like those people are actual fans of a book i thought was mid at best and an currently criticizing. You should listen to those ppl#but also like I found her thought processes to personally be incredibly straightforward and direct ESP to herself#She reminded me a lot of the way I view relationships#like sure I didnāt grow up in the pleasure district but maybe itās the āculture of arranged marriagesā in me#the way she viewed relationships as transactional and didnāt understand love and valued knowledge more any day#were some of the few times that the book was genuinely resonant with me#so like if she does end up with Jinshi i think itās in a āmarriage is a political move and Iām choosing to go with someone that likes me#and i find tolerable to be around and would not mind fulfilling the role required of a wife forā#which is totally fine! It fits well with the setting of the book even if it isnāt the kind of story I personally want to read#anyway I like Maomao. I donāt think sheās into Jinshi but like honestly who cares abt my opinion LOL#3) this is so unrelated to anything but I feel like I understated how little i cared for Jinshi?#nothing against him heās just so fuckin boring??? Which is fine but like#the literal only reason I picked up this series is cuz I heard he was a eunuch and I was like āholy shit eunuch romance sounds interesting

Propaganda:
"A delightful slightly surrealist comic about a small cheerful figure conversing with the world around them. Each comic is pretty short and sweet with a slight existential vibe. The mood shifts between light sardonic and melancholy, but ultimately I feel like I always come away with an appreciation for the little mysteries around us. Recommend for the vibes."
#WOOO BUTTERCUP FESTIVAL#honestly this is the exact ratio I predicted when I submitted it#even tho XKCD has recommended it basically forever#itās very different from A Softer World but in terms of vibes they feel similar to me? Even tho theyāre very different#I really like it tho#I spent like an hour re reading it when i looked up the website to submit it

Here is a sketch comic I made called Ducks, in five parts.
Part One
Part Two
Part Three
Part Four
Part Five
Ducks is about part of my time working at a mining site in Fort McMurray, the events are from 2008. Ā It is a complicated place, it is not the same for all, and these are only my own experiences there. Ā It is a sketch because I want to test how I would tell these stories, and how I feel about sharing them. Ā A larger work gets talked about from time to time. Ā It is not a place I could describe in one or two stories. Ā Ducks is about a lot of things, and among these, it is about environmental destruction in an environment that includes humans. Ā Thank you for taking the time to read it.
-Kate
