10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing
New Part: 10 Lethal Injury Ideas
If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain, here are some ideas:
1. Sprained Ankle
A common injury that can severely limit mobility. This is useful because your characters will have to experience a mild struggle and adapt their plans to their new lack of mobiliy. Perfect to add tension to a chase scene.
2. Rib Contusion
A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult, helping you sneak in those ragged wheezes during a fight scene. Could also be used for something sport-related! It's impactful enough to leave a lingering pain but not enough to hinder their overall movement.
3. Concussions
This common brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a character’s judgment heavily. It can also cause mild amnesia.
I enjoy using concussions when you need another character to subtly take over the fight/scene, it's an easy way to switch POVs. You could also use it if you need a 'cute' recovery moment with A and B.
4. Fractured Finger
A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills. This would be perfect for characters like artists, writers, etc. Or, a fighter who brushes it off as nothing till they try to throw a punch and are hit with pain.
5. Road Rash
Road rash is an abrasion caused by friction. Aka scraping skin. The raw, painful sting resulting from a fall can be a quick but effective way to add pain to your writing. Tip: it's great if you need a mild injury for a child.
6. Shoulder Dislocation
This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation. Good for torture scenes.
7. Deep Laceration
A deep laceration is a cut that requires stitches. As someone who got stitches as a kid, they really aren't that bad! A 2-3 inch wound (in length) provides just enough pain and blood to add that dramatic flair to your writing while not severely deterring your character.
This is also a great wound to look back on since it often scars. Note: the deeper and wider the cut the worse your character's condition. Don't give them a 5 inch deep gash and call that mild.
8. Burns
Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma. Like the previous injury, the lasting physical and emotional trauma of a burn is a great wound for characters to look back on.
If you want to explore writing burns, read here.
9. Pulled Muscle
This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, offering a window to force your character to lean on another. Note: I personally use muscle related injuries when I want to focus more on the pain and sprains to focus on a lack of mobility.
10. Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted. When exploring tendonitis make sure you research well as this can easily turn into a more severe injury.
This is a quick, brief list of ideas to provide writers inspiration. Since it is a shorter blog, I have not covered the injuries in detail. This is inspiration, not a thorough guide. Happy writing! :)

Okay it might be obvious but I still wanna say it. Luka and Ivan are so fucked up in the head compared to the other pet humans because of a combination of isolation from humans and interaction with alien in their upbringing.
Ivan and Luka are raised by very well off guardians. Ivan was spoiled with extravagant meals and was treated like the child Asian parents would be proud of to show off at family gatherings. “Look at our little bean! He’s so handsome and is doing great for representing brands.” Is what I imagine what was often said at these parties.
Luka I think was raised in a similar bourgeois and isolating fashion. He also has a crazy guardian. And I bet Heparu was a big factor in Luka’s behavior because children tend to mirror the behavior of their guardians. His lack of actual human interaction and his ability to outwit his competitors, as a solution to his need for survival, seems to have lead to irregular neurological development and what I believe is masking. Because the way he acts in interviews, competitions, and with Hyuna are very different. Or maybe Hyuna triggers age regression within him.
They also have bad experiences with their body/appearance in relation to aliens. Luka obviously hates that he is a clone and seems to also hate how he was made to be perfect. And he was subjected to a lot of pain because the alien doctors decided to treat his heart and fragile body as a toy. Meanwhile Ivan had to go under smiling training/operations to make him more aesthetically appealing to aliens.
Both also have a bad case of self loathing. Ivan calls himself shallow and selfish for kissing Till without his consent. Yes it was a bit indulgent for Ivan to kiss Till, but by kissing/assaulting and choking Till, Ivan is choosing to sacrifice his reputation and his life for Till. He knew by doing this, even if it may have been a bit last minute, that it would cost him his life, but allowing Till to win and live was more important to him than anything.
Luka also hates himself because he is simply a tool in the end. All he does to prove the success of artificially-made-tube-born human babies and that he is the superior pet human. Plus luka is often monitored because of his poor health conditions. Luka isn’t allowed to simply exist.
Their self loathing is also what causes them to isolate themselves from others physically and mentally. Their lack of freedom and their need save face because their upbringing is why Luka and Ivan fall in love with the embodiment of unbridled joy, freedom, and self expression: Hyuna and Till.
In conclusion, Ivan and Luka are both freaky bitches, but the reason behind their freak is rather depressing.

Hey everyone, I know it's going to be a busy day for a lot of people, but Google enrolled everyone over 18 into their AI program automatically.
If you have a google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off.
Then you need to go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works.
Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit.
I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few minutes to do.

One thing that I noticed about Yukio, something that I found rather interesting, was that he hates himself intently for having what I think any of us would call a pretty normal reaction to the circumstances he was in. Like, Yukio can see demons, and has been able to since he was a toddler. On what planet is he not going to freak out a cry about it? We are shown that kids the same age as Yukio in the show react almost the exact way he does when they are confronted with demons. Yet, somehow Yukio, as a literal toddler, is supposed to be able to handle the situation with grace and maturity and not be scared shitless? Most kids cry over the thought of seeing monsters in the dark, and when Yukio actually does as a kid, because let's not forget some of those demons are creepy af, he’s supposed to remain calm and not freak out? To just get over it?
And I think it’s kinda met to reflect the insane expectations Yukio has always put on himself, ones that lead him to have a double meister and get the top spot at a prestigious academy, all while being the youngest exorcist in history and a school teacher on top of it. Yukio genuinely expects himself to have been able to face the demons and not be afraid of them at 5 years old, even though that’s highly unrealistic and a little insane. So much of his self hatred is derived from this belief that he was pathetic as a kid, and that he should have gotten over himself, even though his reaction is pretty normal considering how young he was and the things he was having to face.

Defending my husband
Okay lowk I made this account to post all of my delicious and nutritious meta for JJBA and Trigun, but apparently my first post is gonna be about Squid Game. That's fine.
I've seen a lot of people making posts on tik tok about how useless Jun-ho is and that he didn't accomplish anything, and this is a take that has irked me because it has been in this fandom since season 1.
So, I have come on here to say: Jun-ho is not useless, he is actually very capable and smart and that the insane odds he is against are why he isn't able to accomplish much.
In season one, not only is he able to infiltrate their operation, which had been operating completely undetected for decades, but he manages to get close to the VIPs and get numerous amounts of very incriminating evidence on it, and remain undetected within their ranks for a solid chunk of time. And, once he is discovered, he doesn't get caught until the very end of the games. Had that evidence not been lost when he was yknow, shot and fell into the fucking ocean, it might have been over for the Squid Games.
(This is impressive for several reasons, the main one being we can assume no one has been able to infiltrate to the level that he has despite the fact that the games have been going on since the 80's. I think it was the 80's.)
But, in season 2 it does kinda feel like he is doing a whole lot of nothing in this season, especially because of how much he was able to accomplish in the season previous, even if it ended up being somewhat futile. All he does is fuck around on a boat and almost get blown up.
But, the first thing to note here is that it is obvious that not only the captain, but The Front Man and the other people in the game are interfering with his progress. Gi-hun's tracker was taken out and implanted on someone else the moment he entered the games, so right from the get go their operation is being tampered with.
There is then, of course, the scene where the man catches the captain meddling with their drone and consequently killing the guy who found him out, something he will very easily be able to explain away due to jun-ho and that one goofy guy's trust in him and the conditions of the weather that night.
These are all factors that hinder Jun-ho's progress, not to mention the two guys getting blown tf up on the island, which just makes things worse because now they have lost man power as well.
But, another thing that must be considered is that Jun-ho no longer has the element of surprise. In season 1, the games are simply operating as normal, because they have been doing so for years and have no reason to believe that there is someone attempting to invade their organization.
In season 2, however, they are now aware that Jun-ho has managed to infiltrate and get valuable information on them, and are now on guard and working actively to counter him, which puts Jun-ho at a disadvantage. This factor is compounded by the fact that we can assume that the captain is keeping the front man updated on all of Jun-ho's movements and plans, allowing him time to think of ways to counteract him.
The fact that the squid game executives are now working against him, and the captain being a spy, are why Jun-ho is not able to accomplish what he was in season 1.
TLDR: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STOP CALLING HIM USELESS THATS MY HUSBAND UR TALKING ABOUT. And I want to add that I have seen ppl calling him dumb for not noticing that the captain is shady as hell, and he definitely is, but we have to remember that this guy saved Jun-ho's life, and the only times we see him act shady are when Jun-ho is not present. So we have to remember that we the audience know more than he does, and things that are like stupid obvious to us aren't to him bc he doesn't have the information and perspective that we have.
I do hope we get to see him being more bad ass in season 3, and I hope we get more interaction between him and the front man bc if there is one thing that makes me fold and kill myself its fucked up siblings on opposite sides of a conflict. anyways rant over. hate on capitalism or whatever

fascinated by how "dislocate" seems to be a word used almost exclusively to refer to the misalignment of bodies, or parts of the body, from their proper place. it's distinctly anatomical. you don't say "i dislocated my keys" for instance, even though that's technically a correct and coherent sentence.
