Ten Tips for Selecting Aquarium Store
1) Do their tanks look good and are their fish healthy?
First thing in selecting aquarium store is, if the tanks in an aquarium store don’t look good, the store is either under-staffed or the owners don’t care. In either case, you may want to think twice about shopping there. Some stores put on a good front with well-decorated tanks, but the fish in them leave a lot to be desired. Look for fish…

MOVING REEF TANK
Tumblr media
Remember, there is no need to rush. Take the trip home real easy, avoiding quick stops, potholes, and sharp turns. When you reach your destination, reverse the order. Remove the livestock first and get them inside, along with the water containers. I like to leave the tank outside to be cleaned up a little later. Position the tank stand in its new location. Bring in the remaining items, some of…

How to Breeding the African Butterfly Cichlid (Anomalochromis thomasi)
Tumblr media
Breeding Cichlid.. One of the beautiful cichlid family is The African Butterfly cichlid. It is a small riverine cichlid from Western Africa. Specifically southeast Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Western Liberia. It rarely grows up to more than 4″ in total length and it has a temperament quite similar to that of the kribensis – relatively peaceful, rarely the substrate digger to, and it seldom bothers…

The Stuff That Water’s Made Of - pH & Alkalinity
The Stuff That Water’s Made Of – pH & Alkalinity
Tumblr media
After our previous two perhaps somewhat arcane installments, we can finally begin using some more broadly understood terminology in our discussion of water chemistry. We will explore two water parameters for which we have all owned a test kit: pH & alkalinity. Whether we are keeping African cichlids, a planted aquarium, or a reef aquarium, these two water parameters can spell the difference…

Astatotilapia nubila was first described by Boulenger in 1906. It’s a small haplochromine cichlid which Lake Victoria in East Africa origin. It is one of very few cichlids that are also found outside of Lake Victoria, in Lakes Nabugabo and Kyoga and the rivers of the Victoria basin to be specific, and thus it is not facing extinction by the Nile Perch.

List of Fish Collection From some country
List of Fish Collection From some country
Black Spot Barb:  Puntius filamentosus
The Black Spot Barb is found in southern and southwest India, and in Sri Lankan mountain streams. Full length of this fish is 15 cm. The male has extended dorsal fin rays, and he gets a spawning rash on the snout above the upper jaw. This barb doesn’t reach sexual maturity until at least 18 months of age.
When I spawned them  I used a 40…

Sand Loaches, They Breed by Themselves
Sand Loaches, They Breed by Themselves
It has been said very often, it is not the hobbyist which breed fish, it is the fish that breed. All we can do is try to help, and sometimes we don’t even do that. Such was the case when our Acanthocobitisurophthalmus spawned. I just went in one day and noticed some strange behaviour going on in our ten gallon planted tank. It just so happened that the only fish in the tank were the sand…

Alternative Live Foods for Fish: Grasshoppers and Crickets
Alternative Live Foods for Fish: Grasshoppers and Crickets
In the last part of this column, I talked about keeping earthworms indoors and I said I would tell you how to keep some of the other summertime foods to feed your fish. These live foods are just as available as the underground foods but a little harder to catch. They have to be baited if you have the time or they may be purchased and maintained in the home. First I’ll tackle the garden pest we…

Raising and Breeding Koi Fish at Pond
Raising and Breeding Koi Fish at Pond
All of the oxymorons of fish keeping the statement that “I bred these fishes or I’m breeding koi fish….” has got to be the most oxymoronic. True, all that’s required to reproduce most pond fish species are decent water quality and a mix of sexes. Ask any experienced ponderer. They would be more impressed if someone told them their fish had never spawned.. Maybe I’m a little bit…

Make "cheap" Live Fish Food : Worm Cultures
Make “cheap” Live Fish Food : Worm Cultures
Tumblr media
Live fish food I’ve got a real bad case of Spring fever and Summer is just around the corner. It looks to get worse year by year. It is the time of the year when cheap fish food becomes available. What I mean by “cheap” is free food. All you have to provide is time and the containers. Grasshoppers, crickets, and earthworms are starting to show up in the yards, parks, and fields. We’ll get to…

How Do I Get the 'Right' Amount and kind of Light at The Lowest Cost?
How Do I Get the ‘Right’ Amount and kind of Light at The Lowest Cost?
Tumblr media
What fixtures and lamps can get you this magical mix of spectral quality with the most impressive of ease? And why not just use sunlight? The last question first. Natural sunlight is ill-suited for most set-ups. Common people live in houses, in the less-tropical parts of the world, and wish to see our systems flourishing whether the sun’s up or not. Besides, the sun has an annoying behavior of…

Aquarium Lighting Parameters
Tumblr media
Why is All This So Important?
We divide the aquarium lighting parameters into three things. Now get this; as EMR, this includes light approaches/enters into a more optically dense medium, in our case water, a couple of things happen. 1) a couple of is reflected depending on the angle of incidence, and disruption of the water surface. 2) EMR entering the water is refracted or bent as it is…

How to Install Aquarium Lighting Properly
How to Install Aquarium Lighting Properly
Tumblr media
As important as aquarium lighting is to the appearance, health of livestock and cost of planted aquarium keeping, it is not surprising that it is an oft-discussed topic. What is stunning to Pine Tree State is what quantity content and dissonance surrounds lighting. There extremely could be a large distinction between what appearance smart to humans and what’s practical in marine systems with or…

Difficulty Level of Keeping Discus Fish
Difficulty Level of Keeping Discus Fish
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Are Discus fish for me? You must inquire yourself this question more so than for any other form of fish generally found in aquaria. Discus have a recognition as being fussy eaters, prone to disease and hard to keep. This is both true and fake. Discus might be fussy: for example if you feed them frozen blood worms as their only food, they may accept this for at one time, then refuse to consume it.…

How To Breeding the Peacock Gudgeon
How To Breeding the Peacock Gudgeon
The “Peacock Gudgeon” or Tateurndina ocellicaudais a small goby from the Australasian region. To me it is the most colorful little freshwater fish to be imported from any area. A mostly pink body with purple, orange, yellow, blue and black vivid colors is seen at all times. The males are about 1 inch and the females are smaller than the males. When fully grown the males have a stocky body with a…

Species Maintenance, for Dummies
Species Maintenance, for Dummies
The important thing to realise about a Species Maintenance Program is that the aquarist is trying to do just that, maintain a species. The issues of hybridisation should not and will not be involved in a Species Maintenance Program, especially in the cases of endangered species. That is why information about hybridisation was included in this article, for the real DUMMIES.
In closing, I…

The Aquatic Environment - Part I
The Aquatic Environment – Part I
Tumblr media
A lot of people who become interested in reef keeping have little or no background knowledge about the marine environment. Many times, beginning hobbyists are those persons who feel ready to make the transition from freshwater to saltwater aquariums. Although some of the basic principles which apply to a freshwater system remain, reef microcosms are often more complex due to the fact that they…
