New acquisition #rarebookfriday Here is the first full English translation of Sebastiano Serlio's five books of architecture. It was translated from the Dutch and printed in London in 1611. It's bound in modern binding and is in fantastic shape. Here are a few photos of the publication. Stop into the Architecture Library to see it in person. #seventeenthcenturybook #architecture #rrbr #archlibnd #librarylove #newoldbook #woodcuts #serlio

Today’s #rarebookfriday is a reminder that there is an exhibit on display in the Architecture Library. Stop in and see DE FRANCE: INFLUENTIAL BOOKS OF ARCHITECTURE FROM FRANCE IN THE RYAN RARE BOOK ROOM COLLECTION. Seen here is Jacques Androuet du Cerceau’s LIVRE DES EDIFICES ANTIQUES ROMAINS, 1584. Androuet du Cerceau was an architect, engraver, furniture designer, and decorator, who at one point was employed by the French King Charles IX and Catherine de Médicis. At trip to Rome early in his career proved to have tremendous influence in his later work (much like our own third year architecture students, #ExpoRoma), as is clearly visible in this publication. #romanarchitecturedrawnbytheFrench #rarebookexhibit #influenceofRomanArchitecture #architecturebooks #sixteenthcentury #androuetducerceau #rrbr #archlibnd

One last engraving from this book, a night scene. This book comes to us with a provenance: until coming to Notre Dame, the book was housed at Nostell Priory, in the possession of the Winn family, who employed Robert Adam to design additional wings to the priory, one of which was completed. Adam also designed buildings on the estate, including the stable block. This book is beautiful. Stop in and have a look! #britisharchitecture #bookprovenance #robertadam #newoldbook #presentationcopy #rarebookfriday

In the mid-18th century, Robert Wood traveled to Syria to study the Roman ruins, which because of the arid climate, were exceptionally preserved. Today’s #rarebookfriday shows some images of Robert Wood’s THE RUINS OF PALMYRA, 1753, which is one of our recent acquisitions to the #RRBR This work fits into our collection of “Roman architecture outside of Rome.” Sadly, some of these ruins were destroyed by the Islamic State. #romeoutsideofrome #ruins #architecture #romanruins

#rarebookfriday is a new (to us) book! This is Robert Wood’s THE RUINS OF BALBEC, OTHERWISE HELIOPOLIS IN COELOSYRIA, printed in London, 1757. Thomas Jefferson also owned a copy of this book. It has extraordinary engravings done by P. Fourdrinier. #newtous #collectionbuilding #ruinsofbalbec #engraving #robertwood #Fourdrinier #18thcentury #archlibND #bondhall #librariesofinstagram #librarylove (at Bond Hall)
