so you don't have to publish this ask if you don't want to continue the topic but i struggle to see what makes incest specifically such a talking point tbh. like obviously irl it's a horrible form of abuse but like... idk, aren't dark topics brought up in fiction all the time? don't people make fun of dark topics all the time? should people never joke about like, "put on the grippy socks" or "i need a lobotomy" because of the abuse involved in those situations historically? and honestly, the only reason dark jokes are funny is because people have the context & understanding that that thing is bad and wrong. so even if one person jokes about it, it's still being taken seriously in other contexts. i understand the other anon's feeling of not wanting one's own trauma to be minimized, but like... idk i don't think that watching fictional stepsister porn is an actual indicator of depravity irl

didnt mean to extend this discussion but work has been eating my time, so, pardon me, but i did want to get to this.

so i think part of the whole issue is that the internet tends to leave very little room for nuance, and you have waay more people interacting with each other's ideas than would normally occur in actual in-person scenarios. so irl if i'm talking with a sibling, i might make a joke about, for example, child abuse. and that could be fine because we know each other and we have an understanding of our experiences and how we both might react to such a joke. but i would be more hesitant to do that sort of thing around other people because i dont want them to believe that i'm actually in any way condoning that sort of thing. if that makes sense? and like the other anon said, incest is probably such a talking point because (many of) the people talking about it have been affected by it. so it's not necessarily like it's the ONE thing you cannot joke about, but more like a lot of people have specific thing(s) that have personally affected them and they're not interested in seeing them be brought up casually and trivialized. so the context of who you're around matters, but when you're online it's like. a) anyone and everyone could be around. b) it can be hard to read tone and intention though text even if you know the person irl, and if you don't know them then i think it's doubly hard.

so all this to say. on a conceptual level, at least, i dont think anyone is particularly wrong here. it's just like. if you're bothered (<- word that sounds kind of diminishing but i do not mean it to be) by something, it makes sense to try and avoid it, and to want the people around you to care enough about you to be mindful of your discomfort and preferences. and also other people who do not know you are going to do/say/engage with things that you dont like and that doesnt inherently make them bad... just maybe people you dont really want to be around.

so. idk. be kind to people and also if youre going to joke about dark things, know your audience and be open to feedback. AND just in general i think maybe we should blow up anybody who says "it's not that deep"
