‘Perhaps we should run off together,’ I suggested jokingly, desperately wanting the conversation to be happy again, but the melancholy look that appeared on Francis’ face made me consider rethinking my original intention. His eyes, normally so cold and piercing, looked sad; and his face, framed with cigarette smoke, made him almost angelic–like a portrait of Mary, perhaps–and for a moment he was a dream again, as unattainable as ever.

‘Perhaps we should,’ Francis echoed, extinguishing his cigarette with a sigh.
