the sunbittern is a uniquely patterned bittern-like bird found ranging from guatemala to brazil. they often only lay clutches of two eggs at a time (sometimes up to three), in an open nest placed in tree branches. the young are somewhat precocial, but remain in the nest for several weeks. in adulthood, sunbitterns are not social and are often reclusive.

anna’s hummingbird is a small hummingbird species distributed across the west coast. they are now year-round residents in portions of the pacific northwest due to warmer weather, human-provided feeders, and ornamental plants that give the hummingbirds nectar to feed on throughout the year. they use their long tongue to extract nectar from within flowers, and also feed on tree sap, insects and small arthropods. during colder months, anna’s hummingbirds gain weight throughout the course of the day as they convert sugar to fat to sustain themselves during periods of rest. anna’s hummingbirds with insufficient stores of body fat are able to survive subfreezing temperatures by lowering their metabolic rate and body temperature, entering torpor. there is evidence that the fast wingbeats of these hummingbirds generate an electrostatic charge, allowing pollen to easily adhere to their beaks and feathers while feeding; one hummingbird alone may pollinate hundreds of flowers a day.

“I’m always afraid others might talk about me. I’ve failed in everything. I didn’t dare think of being something; I didn’t even dream of thinking about being something, because even in my dreams - in my visionary state as a mere dreamer - I realized I was unfit for life. No feeling can lift my head from the pillow where I’ve let it sink in desperation, unable to deal with my body or even with the idea that I’m alive, or even with the abstract idea of life. I don’t speak the language of any reality, and I stagger among the things of life like a sick man who finally got up after being bedridden for months. Only in bed do I feel like part of normal life. It pleases me to get a fever, since it seems perfectly natural to my recumbent state. Like a flame in the wind I flutter and get dizzy. Only in the dead air of closed rooms do I breathe the normality of my life.”
— Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet
