Parallels between Mob and Serizawa

First off, I can’t believe this anime is almost over, how will I be able to live my life without my weekly dose of Mob Mondays? But getting to the point, Episode 12 showed us a great example of the parallels between Mob and Serizawa. Just like how Mogami represented a path Mob could have gone down if he’d had no one to stop him, Serizawa is just like Mob, except that he didn’t have a good mentor like Reigen to teach him right from wrong.

In Serizawa’s flashback to his meeting with Touichirou, we see the same line that Reigen told Mob when he first took him under his wing:

Both Mob and Serizawa had someone come into their life to act as a guiding force, but while Reigen actually concerned himself with Mob’s well-being, Serizawa was seen as less than human by Touichirou.

Then in the transition slides:

I love this parallel since it shows how Serizawa is looking at Touichirou, Touichirou is standing independently away from Serizawa and is facing forward rather than towards Seri. 

On the other hand, Mob notices that the umbrella isn’t covering the both of them, so he erects a barrier to keep Reigen out of the rain- a show of Mob’s gratitude and kindness towards his master. Reigen’s posture is hunched and turned in Mob’s direction, showing their closeness and his reliance on Mob. Both of them rely on each other, and as it was shown in epiosde 7, it wasn’t just Mob who was saved by Reigen, but it was also his master who was saved upon meeting him.

In the case of Seri and Touichirou, not only is Touichirou standing to the side, but its clear that the umbrella is wide and tall enough for the two without him having to bend down like Reigen. It’s Reigen’s slight crouch that shows he’s accepting Mob’s umbrella, and as an extension, his help, whereas Touichirou refuses to rely on anyone but himself.

This got rather long, but in a nutshell, thank you Bones for the addition of this great parallel.

what about 100% loss?

mob would totally go ??? if reigen wasn't saved by seri but if you had to pick an emotion he'd go 100% with what would it be? (denial? grief? devastation? horror? etc)

There are so many different choices! But I think in the essence of how humans work, you don’t feel just one emotion when you watch somone who has become an important aspect of your daily life die right in front of you. It’s a combination of horror, shock, nausea, pain, etc… It wouldn’t be fair to just attribute one feeling to that moment. It’s every feeling associated, with grief and pain and an inconceivable horror that you just can’t pull out of, mixed into some terrible concoction that takes years to unravel (yet how funny is it that it only takes one second for it to materialize?), but I think in the moment of Reigen falling to the ground and not getting up, the emotion that would boil over all of them would still be rage, because Mob’s been building up to this moment. He saw his family dead, his parents and brother dead, his Body Improvement Club threatened, his friends harmed, and the only thing that has remained his rock is Reigen, who managed to keep him from, ah, as the kids say it, “going apeshit”. And when he wakes up, everything is okay, his family is okay, his friends are okay, everything’s okay, Mob, we just have to lecture this man like we’ve done every other man. Right, this man that has caused everything, and had it not been for Shou’s actions, his family would actually be dead. But then he blinks, and Reigen’s not moving, (oh god why isn’t he moving?), and I think it would all snap for him.

So… ah, yeah. Rage. Still rage. Just this time… maybe not as constrained. Granted, I don’t think in his fit of rage he fully comprehends that Reigen’s dead. It’s more of a bodily reaction than his brain fully connecting the dots, because it takes time for the brain to think it’s safe enough to pull away from the numbness it cocoons itself in. When it does though… I think that’s when we don’t see ???% anymore, but just variants of 100%s from Mob. There we’ll see the fits of pain, of grief, of regret.

*clears throat* A-anyways you’re pulling me into a dangerous mood, my friend. I wanna write this more and more.
