Also the other extremely important reason why Vegeta works is that Toriyama never lets his popularity and image of the cool badass rival get to him, unlike what might happen in other shounen who can end up ruining their characters because they have to always be the coolest guy in the room.

Dragon Ball never lets anyone get away with it. If they do something out of line, they get clowned on immediately. If they try to act too cool, they get clowned on. If you want to last long as a Dragon Ball character you need to embrace the clownery.

This is why Majin Buu was by far the most dangerous enemy.
