SEBASTIANO SALGADO
Salgado’s images, captured in 1986 at the peak of the dry season at the Serra Pelada gold mine in north-eastern Brazil, depict some 50,000 mud-clad miners. the other half flow upwards in unison on wooden ladders.
“The images remind you of slavery, of forced work, but actually all these men were motivated by the idea of freeing themselves”
- Juliana Salgado
Sebastian portrays men determined to get their shot at a better life through freedom promised by gold.
his use of black and white alone draws me to his images. He creates a sense of curiosity and I found myself asking questions. Ive been exploring with black and white and how to create that dramatic effect.
