Soooooo not that long ago, I finished Octopath Traveler 2. I hadn't played the first mostly out of disinterest and hearing that the party doesn't really interact much, but my interest piqued with the second after hearing about it and watching a friend play it in call. Now that I've played it myself, uhhhhhh yeah is probably in my top 3 for this year.
I love each member of the cast (it's hard to choose my favorite but at the time of writing it's either osvald or partitio), I love each of traveler's stories and how they weave not just into some greater plot resolved at the end of the game, but how they contribute to painting the world and cities you visit with their differing perspectives. Oh and I absolutely love the combat in this game, the shield and break mechanics add not only a nice bit of nuance to fights, but also to your party selection and tactics, and I like how things like boosting, secondary jobs, and latent powers (new to this game) open up the party's versatility by quite a bit. Anyone can be anything, but some characters do it better than others.
I'd go further on my thoughts, but this is more or less preamble for a fun little art project to do with my characters. There are 8 jobs (4 more if you count the secret jobs) with 6 elements and 6 weapon types split between all of them, and each character has a starting one, and a second one they can later equip. Basically, I just wanted to draw my rats and 1 cats in outfits that matched the job i'd imagine they'd fit the most. And wouldn't you know it, they came out pretty well actually.
As you can see, Volt became a Apothecary and Scholar, Kilua a Thief and Hunter, and Skye a Warrior and Dancer.
Kilua's is probably the easiest to explain. Her characterization already paints her as a thief, her main weapon is a dagger, she has access to some form of darkness manipulation with the shadow manipulation and the dark typing, it's kind of a given. She could've done fine with just Thief, but her outfit is based off of Ochette's thief attire, who's normally a hunter. And with a hunter's use of electricity, focus on the critical stat, and particular brand of debuffs like abating orb and leghold trap fit pretty well with Kilua's multifaceted skillset.
Skye is also kind of easy to explain. With moves like eneverating slash and vengeful blade, I get the impression Warrior in this game fights closer to a iaido sword style, and that's exactly what Skye does. As for the dancer addition, it's less because of the outfit choice, as Skye's take on the attire is based off of Temenos's take on it whereas he's normally a cleric. No instead, it's because Dancer has wind magic, and provides buffs that increase damage and turn order speed, which I think just makes sense based on how I imagine Skye uses wind magic, which is less offensive, and more supplemental.
Lastly is Volt, and honestly it probably seems like it would've made more sense to make Volt a scholar, right? I mean Volt's main shtick is having really powerful electricity, Scholar is all about offensive magic and boosting it to immense amounts, it just works. And that's not wrong, but I chose apothecary because I think not only does the outfit translate to Volt's quite well, but apothecary as a kit (in OT2 at least) is a bit closer to what I imagine Volt's approach to a fight is otherwise. Apothecary I think is a very versatile class that excels in support (with healing and poisoning) and surprisingly strong DPS with things like drastic measures, all made better by the class's high hp to help tank hits and keep everyone up. A versatile class that I think helps work with Volt's more adaptive approach to a fight, albeit in a way that I don't normally think of for them. Volt's normal weapon is them using Iron Tail, but since that can't really fit the theme, sword or axe can make for fine enough replacements. Plus, I do kind of think Castti's want to lend a helping hand to all she can does translate to Volt's personality in some way, even if means they both get thrown into life threatening stakes.
And that's basically all I feel like showing right now. Full transparency, I was wanting to make individual posts with larger doodle pages for each character, and tbf, I might post more doodles related to this concept if I feel like it later, but I didn't really feel like putting that much into it all considering how long it takes me to finish things. Besides, I like how this is now.
Also funny little thing to leave you off with. When a character equips a secondary job in Octopath (either the first or second game), their costume changes to match that of the new class, with no way to change it otherwise unless you swap to another job. While I don't really care about applying that logic to my characters, if I did, then Volt's original class would've been scholar, kilua's would've been hunter, and Skye's would've been dancer. It'd be funny to sketch up what each of them might look like in those classes attires, but maybe another time.
Thank you for reading, and you have a good rest of your day!

I am learning more each day why making Skye left-handed is really annoying when to look up good sword references

Happy Birthday Volt! (11/18/24)
So admittedly I've been busy with a few things lately, but I wanted to celebrate the rat's (Volt's) birthday! They mean a lot to me for a lot of reasons, and while I wish I did more, I think I can settle for a fun little drawing for the occasion.
Happy Birthday Volt!

2024 Reference Sheets
Alright, it's that time of year again, and this time we got three faces to show. First and foremost is our returning glowy-eyed rat siblings of Volt Nakano and Kilua Nakano-Parfum
Alongside them for this year, we also have a new face in Skye Leylin
Voltia Nakano is a somewhat scatterbrained yet free-spirited freelancer with an incredibly powerful ability they've spent a long time dealing with. They are generally very kind, curious of the world, and quite headstrong, but is very much anxiety-ridden.
Kilua Nakano-Parfum is a crafty yet formidable former-thief with a love of sweets who made a name for herself as the "Ghost of Lumiose". She is generally quite mischevious and fun-loving, and tends to keep people at a distance, but she is fiercely loyal to the ones she cares about.
Lastly, Skylar Leylin is a tenacious and talented wind mage raised in a group known as the firekeepers, but barred from ever joining them, and now seeks to understand the nature of their sealed away flames. They initially come off as cool, collected, and a bit aloof, but can in truth be incredibly driven, strict, and somewhat intense.

Hey so I'm a little late but I'm doing Artfight
So I messed up a bit and forgot I was a slow writer. I was supposed to have posted this a week ago but character descriptions kept me busy... whoops. Either way, I'm on Team Stardust.
Sorry this took a bit, but I hope to see you on there!

Btw, I did see the artfight team reveal thing. I know what team I want to be on, but I'm gonna hold that info a bit closer to my chest until I get done with my reference sheets. Still taking a minute but we're getting somewhere at least.
Hope you're ready for it! :3

Oh yea, i'm doing Artfight stuff again this year.
Though, i'm gonna wait before I do any profile linking because I am once again working on reference sheets. Tbf, I had some alright ones last year but I did just kind of speed by the process just to quicken the process since I was kind of late. I don't think they were as cool as they could've been. Plus I missed out on doing something before the event started...
That being said though, there will be some cool stuff this year. You'll see by then.
(also sorry i've been away from this account for so long, genuinely just either have been busy, or not in the mood.)

Artfight 2023 Collection
This year’s Artfight has come and gone, and it was a pretty active year all things considered. Sent out a lot of attacks, and even got a lot of defenses, especially for Kilua this year. Since a lot of work went into the pieces I did this month, here’s each of the pieces I did for people.
Keep in mind that I was on Team Vampire, so next to the title of the piece, i’ll have a number that corresponds to the person it was for, attributed to near the bottom of the post, and in parentheses, a indicator on which type of piece it was, friendly fire, attack, revenge, etc. Without further ado... here’s what I did this year!
#Piece 1 - 20th Century Boys (Attack) Ft. Clarenze and Liam Signhson
#Piece 2 - Sweeping Blade of Grass (Attack) Ft. Parsley
#Piece 3 - Ballin’ (Attack) Ft. Slim Ridland (Ft. Daily Pyoro)
#Piece 4 - An Unlikely Trio (Attack) Ft. Ivy, Josie, and Wynne
#Piece 5 - Reaper in the Rain (Revenge) Ft. Drizzle
#Piece 6 - Salty Vaporwave (Revenge) Ft. Jewel
#Piece 7 - Hat Trick (Friendly Fire) Ft. Ferris and Mochi
#Piece 8 - Flower-Tailed Forest Dweller (Attack) Ft. Matcha
#Piece 9 - Sunflower Chu (Attack) Ft. Poppet (PMD ver.)
#Final Piece - Fluffy Aeromancer Dragon (With a Battleax) Ft. Aero

Last Thoughts of the Event:
This year’s artfight I think was one of my favorites i’ve had so far (and i’ve only been around since 2021), but not without some added anxiety.
Some of that anxiety was expected stuff from artfight, like not being able to hit a couple people because I ran out of time and energy, and also dealing with artist burnout a couple time. But some other stuff was personal life stuff, and well... twitter becoming more and more of a trashfire.
That all being said, this year was also really fun. One of my favorite things to do over an artfight is find some way to improve on or just experiment with my art since I don’t really do “big colored pieces” very often, and this year certainly helped push that a little further. I experiment a lot with shading and backgrounds, and I think in hindsight, things like Pieces 2, 5, 6, 8, and Final ended up being my favorites to look at just because the colors and background all just work.
Some of them also allowed me to think up a couple ideas of scenarios to put the characters in that added to how I went about the piece. Pictures 4 and 7 especially clarify that, considering they depict a scenario or even a potential group dynamic that’s pretty fun to think on.
Though what also was crazy was that I got attacked a lot more than I was expecting to going into this year. Like I expected at least a couple if I was actively participating, but I got hit with... well 7 technically, but one was a mass attack Volt was included in, not directed at me, so 6 officially. It was a neat surprise to keep waking up to a few of them, and a lot of them focused on Kilua, she got a lot of love this year. (dw, Volt got a couple too actually). I’m really happy about that, and I love all the drawings people did, they all capture something about the original designs that I love, while translated into their own styles. Dibnibs in specific went and even added backgrounds to them after the event passed, and they (not just mine but a couple of the others I saw) look awesome.
Whatever the case though, the event went really well. I got quite a few pieces sent my way, and I was able to put out a lot of pieces, and a lot of those pieces I really like how they came out. I was on Team Vampire this year, but I think I can say i’ll win either way because I only was on there because a lot of my mutuals were going werewolf, and I wanted to have opposition. That and, I just like Werewolves more.
If anyone has questions for me about anything related to their art, my dms are open. And with that, thanks for a really fun year to everyone who participated.
