unit 1 Beginnigs Evaluation
What I liked and enjoyed the most about this unit was creating the visuals and deciding what the space is going to be used for. However I wasnt confident at the start when I was given the task of creating a space that would fit in a three by three metre room. Over the weeks I became more and more confident about my skills and the task because I learnt new things from others as well as myself and gained alot of experience. What I think went well was the concept of my idea  because I did alot of research before designing the study area. What I believe I should improve is practicing creating interior plans and sections as I struggled alot with the section plan.

Final Presentation sheets
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my presentation sheets I decided to go with a colour palette that suits the layout of my bind book and the colours that I commonly used for the study area. This allows my layout to look presentable and professional.

Sketch Model
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The model above was a quick sketch model that would give me and the viewers an idea of how the space would look like realisticly. I decided to use green bendable wire to create the effect og grennery which is an essential element of my design. This 3D model helped me to realise my mistakes as well as what worked well.

Development sketch and visuals
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are sketches and a collage of visuals. I focused alot on the wood texture and this was my strength as I am more confident with textures and details. I used a alot of the paint brush on photoshop to create a water colour effect. The middle visual is my favourite as you can feel the atmosphere through the picture and the details of the plants. I wanted to show different perspectives of the study space.

Experimentation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I first decided to sketch some furniture that is ideal to the study area. I used different sized pencils and a rubber. I’ve also roughly sketched some nature and plants that can emphasise a relaxing environement. Another reason why I was so keen to add some plants and nature is because through my research I found out that nature allows us to concentrate and reduces stress which is what students require the most nowadays.

Interior section and plan:
Tumblr media
This plan wasn’t successful. After recieving advice and feedback from my teachers I realised that I focused on many areas in a 3 by 3 interior that is too small to fit all areas that I designed above. So I decided to focus on one space which was the social area that fits up to four students.
Interior section:
Tumblr media
This is a section of the study area that I designed the rectangular shapes are of the bean bags that students use for relaxation and to increase the comfort of the area. I first scanned it in and then drew it digitally.
Interior plan:
Tumblr media
This is a plan of the interior which consists of a slide door, bean bags and walls. The first attempt of my plan above was a fail so I decided to specifically focus on the social area. I then drew the plan to scale and scanned it and then drew it digitally.

Part 2- Research
What is the 3*3 location:
study space for university students
Location:
Football Museum
Aim of the interior:
To create an ideal study space thats open to all university students which allows them to concentrate and battle stress in a relaxing environment.
Who is it for?
University students
What use does it have?
allows them to concentrate and socialise with others in a relaxing environment.
Is it permanent or temporary?
permanent
What is the purpose of the space?
Learn/Gather/Relax
PROTAGONIST:
Tumblr media
How I'm planning to create a relaxing environment through the interior:
Importance of elements-
Natural Lights: Concentration- Making sure that the room is flooded with natural day light. Exposure to sunlight is proven to increase concentration. In addition to that research has proven that students that are more exposed to natural light concentrate for longer periods of time and they tend to learn faster and more efficiently. Sunlight allows the information to move from short term memory to long term memory. Productivity- Students that are more exposed to natural lights have more energy, get more restful sleeps and have less fatigue throughout the day. Studies have proven that artificial lights negatively impact productivity. A study conducted by Dr. Mirjam Munch, proved that productivity in an artificially lit space decreases dramatically over time. Mood- The benefit of natural light exposure is that it makes us happier. A lack of exposure to sunlight can cause stress and depression. The effect of stress and depression prevents students from concentrating in class. It can also make their brains process information much slower than someone without depression. Students who are exposed to light will reflect positive feelings when studying making them feel relaxed and comfortable in their educational setting. Cost efficiency- Having windows and an increase use of natural light has proven to be more cost effective as it would result in a decrease of electricity cost. The U.S. department of education estimates that the use of natural light can lower the cost of artificial lights by 30-50%. Smart glass reduces the amount of heat transferred to the building.
Nature/ outdoor environment: According to carpetrights research 81% of people say having an outdoor place is important and 44% link the definition of relaxation with greenery and nature. The only times university students get to experience the effects of nature is walking between university buildings. In order tocreate an ideal environment in the interior is to introduce some greenery within the study area. Plants are shown to reduce stress and anxiety.
Comfortable features/ furniture: 72% of people claimed their bedroom makes them feel relaxed. This suggests that students are more likely to feel relaxed and calm in a environment that consists of bedroom furniture such as pillows, blankets, rugs. To create a space that they would feel relaxed in after those lectures/ seminar. Make them cozy and feel at home.
Precedent designs that have inspired me:
Coventry university student hub- http://www.designcurial.com/projects/coventry-university-student-hub-3112
Tumblr media
Student hub was created with the intention of designing a sort of a living room where students can learn and relax. The idea of acoustic baffles is very clever as it absorbs direct or reverberant sounds. The different coloured baffles hanging from the ceiling help students find their way as they move from one activity or area to another. Instead of the designers dividing the space into rooms they decided to use huge modules of furniture in different colours to create different zones. To soften the design they included some decorative features such as the patterned carpets and pendant lights with cylindrical shades, this overall makes the space more homely.
What inspired me? What I was inspired by is the colour coding of different areas which highlighted the different activities. The idea of creating an environment that aims to make the students feel at home.
Learning Hub in Singapore by Thomas Heatherwick: https://www.architectural-review.com/today/learning-hub-in-singapore-by-thomas-heatherwick/8681493.article
Tumblr media
What inspired me? The structure of the building is very unique. Many balconies to allow natural ventilation which allows air to circulate throughout the building and sunlight. Each balcony has a garden and many small areas of planting. The building has been inspired by nature and the natural environment which creates the ideal space for relaxation.

Tumblr media
Communication and interactions between students have been key issues so this project aimed to a create a space that displays flexibility regarding team size such as classes or small groups. The idea of not having level changes makes the space as flexible as possible. It also allows different teaching and learning spaces to overlap without distinct borders. Circulation through stairs and different materials suggests different activities and movement. What inspired me? This project encourages interactions and communication between people which is vital and important to allow students to relax and enjoy themselves as well as ask for their peers help. The design of the interior has been created in a way that students would feel as comfortable as possible e.g. zone spaces are big and consists of comfortable pillows.

Protagonist
Asiya Begum
Asiya is a University student in university of manchester. She is 18 years old and is currently studying crimonology.
Outdoors or indoors? The obvious choice for me would be outdoors. What helps me the most about studying in an outdoor area is the greenery that magically reduces my stress and anxiety.
What do you like doing in your free time? I like to focus on my fitness and love going to the gym. During my free time I like to work on my small business with my sister.
What is your ideal studying environment? organisation is the most important. I always make sure that my belongings are organised in their draws and not scattered everywhere as it can distract me. However what I don’t like about studying in university study areas is that work gets piled up quickly and easily lost.

Part 1 - Reimagined Space
Tumblr media
I decided to design a wedding venue in the football Museum location. The reason why I chose a wedding venue is because I wanted to convey positive feelings and express the feelings of happiness through the venue. I used different tools such as the blur tool, magic wand tool and other tools. I also played with the opacity to test different transparency of materials. An example would be the glass effect on the stair case. The reason why I decided to make the stairs as glass is because it adds to the atmosphere of a magical and exciting environment. The ceiling is not fully covered with wood. I purposely did this because if I were to make it all wooden the texture effect on the ceiling which I sketched would disappear. Another reason is because by carefully deciding where to place the feature of the wood on the sketch it adds to the atmosphere of the space. Adding nature and greenery to the venue emphasises an alive mood.
To improve I can build my skills in photoshop and explore new tools that can further emphasise the strengths of my work.

‘Sense Of Place’
Tumblr media
The image above is a a sketch of the Football Museum. The reason why I decided to sketch the exterior rather than the interior is because I was more attracted to the design and structure of the exterior as it overwhelmed me. I focused alot on small details of the image and that its to try and adapt the skills that I learnt so far in my final sketch. Including important aspects such as light and shade. I used different techniques such as cross hatching and smudging including the rubber in order to achieve the desired atmosphere.   I used different materials such as pencils and rubber. The combination of these materials allowed me to emphasize my work in a much better way to the viewers. To improve I can try to use different materials such as Biro or fineliners.

Sketches of Football museum
Tumblr media
This sketch is a children play area within the museum. This was the only sketch that I added colour in because it matches the theme of a children play area and colour is essential. The other reason why I chose to add colour is because I wanted to experiment further and test my skills so that I can improve with colour.

Perspective Practice
Tumblr media
After simone evaluate my perspective drawing I tried to improve it through her feedback points. comments such as: I need to get the evel level and vanishing point correct from my view and the scale of my sketch. After her feedback I sketched the view again however this time I considered all factors such as the vanishing point from my point of view which is demonstrated above. This time I improved the sketch. This helped me realise that feedback from others is as important as mine.

A useful and helpful session that allowed me to develop my drawing skills was simones persepctive lessons. This allowed me to sketch a live image in site rather than through a photograph. It also made me consider the importance of perspectives in interior design. The skecth above was my first attempt in trying to draw in perspective. I found it quite difficult to get the perspective right from my eye level and the vanishing point.
