Dearest Daughter,
If you’re reading this, then I am so, so sorry. It’s my fault you grew up without a father, and it had always been my intent to help you as much as possible ever since we found each other again. I want you to know that you have turned out as wonderful and vibrant as I could have ever wanted an offspring of mine to be. From what I’ve gathered, the last few weeks have been a great opportunity for you to let your hair down (in more than one sense) and define yourself outside of your relationship with that Varrick man.
When I heard that you had betrayed Varrick to work for Kuvira, I knew better. I knew all along that you were better than that. You’re no mercenary. You have a very strong moral compass, and you follow it unerringly. (Can’t imagine who you get it from!)
I was overjoyed to see you alive and well back in Republic City, and I regret not saying so to you, but since our relationship was always meant to be under close guard, I decided against it.
Since I am gone now, I was hoping you’d honor this old man’s final request: Bum-Ju and I have discussed it, and if I weren’t able to take care of him anymore, he could either go back to his home in the Spirit World… or live with his adopted sister— you. If you don’t care to, it’s perfectly fine, Bum-Ju would just need you to take him to the Spirit Portals to go to his old home… but if you can find it in your heart to take care of him, I’d be forever appreciative.
I’m sure you already know, but I’m so happy I knew you, Zhu Li. I couldn’t have asked for a better daughter. I love you.
~Father

Among Bumi’s possessions were several unsent letters, one of which was addressed to Korra:
Dear Korra,
As I’m writing this, Kuvira’s forces are on the way to Republic City, and you, Asami, Bolin, and Mako are off to stop her spirit-weapon from arriving. We both know that stopping the weapon won’t prevent the war that’s going to happen in Republic City, but it will certainly give us an edge.
Anyways… If you’re reading this, something went awry during the battle, and I’m not there anymore. I just want you to know, that from the time I first met you, having lost all but your airbending to Amon Noatak, you were stronger than you would ever give yourself credit for. You got your bending back through your connection with my father, and I couldn’t have been happier— both that you were happy again, and that (in some way) my father’s spirit lived on in a way that could affect the world.
I was so incredibly proud of you during the Water Tribe Civil War; the young woman who was once so eager to fight everything was doing her best to broker peace between— not just the two tribes— but between members of her own family. Again, you rose to the occasion and bridged the gap between our world and the spirit world… I have you to thank for a world where Bum-Ju and I can live together and for my airbending.
Then came the events with Zaheer and the Red Lotus, you were broken and broken-hearted, but you never, ever gave up, even when you had gone through trauma that would have put some of my best soldiers down for good. Even after all of that, you got back on your feet and trudged back to fight the good fight.
I understand the pressures and stresses you must feel, being the Avatar, and I can’t imagine what could come that would surpass the Metal Army in terms of daunting difficulty, but there is no doubt in my mind that you will meet the challenge and beat it with flying colors.
I’m so very proud of you.
All the Best,~Bumi
PS: Please check in with Ten-Ten, Kya, and my mother from time to time. Pema and the kids may need you as well… I know Tenzin will take my death harder than anyone else. Just… let him know that I love him, ‘kay?

Do you RP anymore or do just do asks and memes?
I will answer ANY anon questions.
((I still RP! I love RP’ing with people both old and new, familiar and unknown alike. I’ve just been busy trying to get my other blog featuring The Elite Three back on its feet before the series ends (I’m working on a fic right now detailing the adventures of my OC’s during the events of the show.) However, with the time spent there, I’ve kind of fallen off the wagon with Bumi on this blog. If you want to send me a starter, feel free to either tag (#askformercommanderbumi) or mention me in the post and I’ll pick it up. Or, if you prefer to plot before doing a thread, my inbox is always open.

Anger
The next few days were a hazy blur to Bumi. He was excused from his ship-duties until they made it into port, where he’d be let loose to go take care of Aang’s affairs. Most of that time was spent in his bunk, staring up at the ceiling in a mental fog.
When the FNS Kuchiku-kan pulled into port, Bumi was the first to descend the ramp onto the docks, where Kya was anxiously awaiting him. She appeared no worse for wear, given the circumstance, and greeted Bumi with a wordless hug that he returned almost mechanically. They booked a night at a local hotel before booking passage to Republic City to manage their father’s affairs. And much like his voyage into port, Bumi spent most of that time lying on his bed and staring up at the ceiling.
"Bumi," Kya prompted, sitting on her own bed and looking at her brother, "I know what you’re feeling right now, and bottling it up isn’t going to help. I know Mom’s going to be a wreck when we meet her, so the two of us have to be strong to support her when we get there. You can open up to me. Tell me what’s on your mind."
Bumi gave Kya a sidelong glance. What was he supposed to tell her? That he’d felt nothing since he’d received news of his father’s passing? That he was a heartless monster for not feeling the same horror and dismay at the death of quite possibly the greatest Avatar? Restorer of Balance and founder of Republic City? He wordlessly rolled over to face the far wall.
Kya frowned and blinked back the tears. “Bumi, please. Let’s talk about this.” She stood and placed a hand on Bumi’s shoulder.
Bumi rolled off the bed to his feet opposite Kya, knocking her hand away with his wrist. “I don’t want to talk about it Kya!” he said, much louder and more forcefully than he intended. “There’s nothing to talk about. Dad’s dead and we have to go clean up his mess! Mother’s going to want the whole family back together, and that means fawning over Ten-Ten, Aunt Toph and Lin are going to be there, grouchy as always, as well as Uncle Zuko and Izumi (that’ll be fun and awkward.) I can’t go through all of that, I just can’t!" Bumi stormed past a horrified Kya to door of their room and left, letting the door slam behind him.
He fumed through the hallway of the hotel, not knowing where he was going or what he intended to do when he got there. He just knew he had to get away; he had to find somewhere where he could escape all of the anxiety and self-loathing that had been building up inside of him.
He could hear Kya’s footsteps behind him, and he picked up the pace of his angry march, trying to get away without giving her the satisfaction of having to run.
"Bumi."
"Leave me alone."
"Bumi."
"I said leave me alone!”
What happened next was so fast, Bumi didn’t even register. As he turned to face Kya, his hand was raised to strike. His sister, with reflexes born and bred from the world’s greatest waterbender, shot a jet of water from her waist-pouch, blasting her brother against the wall of the corridor and freezing him in place. Her bright blue eyes flashed with outrage.
"That’s not fair, Kya!" Bumi shouted, his temper getting the better of him. "Let me down! Let me down now!”
Kya shook her head, her expression a mixture of pity and contempt as she watched Bumi fruitlessly struggle against the ice securing him to the wall.
"It’s not fair, Kya!" Bumi shouted again. "It’s not fair! It’s not… It’s not fair…"
All of the emotion that had been brewing inside of Bumi seemed to surge forth and burn out within Bumi as he was forced to face his sister and accept that he couldn’t escape the ramifications of his father’s death.
Seeing the change come over her brother, Kya melted the water and bended it back into her waist-pouch, catching Bumi in a tight hug as he was released.
Bumi returned the hug in full. “You shouldn’t have done that,” he said softly. “I’m soaked to the bone.”
"I got all the water I used back in the pouch. You’re fine." Kya replied, still holding on.
"No. I’m pretty sure you missed some." Bumi said, pressing a wet face into his sister’s shoulder. His body shook silently as he hugged his sister in apology and support.
Bumi's voice left him. His mouth shaping unspoken words, he heard Katara on the other end of the phone. "Bumi, are you there? Did you hear me?" "Yeah, yeah, I heard you mom. I-- I gotta go talk to my CO, get some time off to see you." Bumi hung up the phone and went to his quarters. He wanted to cry, he wanted to let all of the shock and horror well up within him, but it seemed to be stuck in the pit of his stomach. His father was truly gone... and he couldn't summon up a single tear...

What was wrong with him? Bumi felt nothing but the deep sense of dread and weight in the pit of his stomach, and numbness all over. He tried to force the mentality onto himself. His father, the Avatar, the one who raised him, the one who allowed him to become the person he was today was just… gone.
The door to Bumi’s quarters opened, and in stepped Admiral Azen. “I heard your father has passed, Ensign,” he said calmly.
Bumi stumbled over his words in confusion. How had the Admiral known this? Only minutes after Bumi himself had learned— It hit him that his father was famous, a world leader and public figure, and that news of his passing was bound to spread to those who needed to know.
"Yes sir." Bumi said, not quite meeting the admiral’s gaze.
"You seem to be taking the news rather well, seaman." Azen prompted, his small, amber eyes taking in every expression of the young man before him.
"It just hasn’t hit me in full." Bumi admitted, though it pained him to do so.
"You’re getting four weeks of leave, Ensign." Admiral Azen said, suddenly authoritative. "I expect you to be back up to form by then."
The admiral turned on his heel and headed for the hatch. He stopped with one foot out of the room and looked over his shoulder at Bumi. “We’ve lost a great source of goodness in the world today, Bumi. The world is going to need another source of goodness and joy. I hope you’re up to the task.”
Bumi nodded slowly and gave a long dramatic sigh. "I... I guess you're right, Iroh." he said, his voice choking up. "I'm just an old man who made a mistake, and now I need to pay for it. I lost my money, and now I get to lose my limbs... all because I had hoped a friend would go on a date with a millionaire heiress."
Bumi gave a long, snotty sniff as he shuffled towards the door. His eyes glistened with crocodile tears.
"Who knows, maybe I can find a way to get along without limbs... Ming Hua had those water-arms... Or maybe I could pull a Zaheer and learn to fly by letting go of all my earthly possessions... I've already lost all of my friends..."

"Right— right, who would forget the Leiren family?" Only he would get himself in trouble with a prestigious family. One that owned a rhino-bear at that. Once again he was collateral damage— nothing unheard of either.
Sigh
"I’m not doing you any favors anymore. I can’t keep getting in trouble for your sake. You do know I do have a reputation to uphold…"

Bumi hesitated to make eye contact as he answered. "I might... might get my arms and legs torn off by her pet rhino-bear. Yes. She has a pet rhino bear. She's Yentin Leiren, of the Leiren family? That big family with investments all over the world?"
Bumi forced a toothy smile that didn't reflect in his slightly terrified eyes. "It's just a date, Iroh, nothing for you to be nervous about; with your... your nice hair, and eyebrows, and cheekbones..."
He sat through many conversations just like this one many many times before. Long, extravagant— most of which involved the former commander giving him an entire play by play to relive the moment.
He wasn’t even surprised at the outcome of this story, he just knew he was going to be involved at some point. “And if I don’t go?”

"Well, I was trying to charm this lovely lady by showing off my fantastic skills at high-low. Unfortunately they weren't fantastic enough to get me out of a really bad losing streak. By the end of it, I bet a date with you against all of my losses."
"And I lost again."
"Your date is at eight at Flameo's. Sorry buddy."
"So... You know how I went out gambling last night?"

"And pray tell— what happened this time?” He asked, expecting another extravagant tale of his.
