Tokyo Ghoul:RE Quinx Masks

1. Mutsuki

Mutsuki’s mask is interesting as it seems to be a direct variation to Kaneki/Haise’s eyepatch mask. As we know with Uta’s interest and the similar nature of Mutsuki and black haired Kaneki. It’s safe to say Mutsuki may be being groomed by Uta to be the next Kaneki. Ergo the similer masks.

Even Mutsuki’s clothes appear made to look like Kaneki’s. with a short over jacket and seemingly bare shoulders underneath.

One thing I find interesting when contrasting the 2 masks is that besides their similar practical design they seem to have reverse natures. While Kaneki/Haise’s mask is a gaping grimace the mouth on Mutsuki’s mask is sewn shut and the eyepatch looks almost like it has a sleeping closed eye on it. Also the jacket and mask appear to be white in complete reverse of Kaneki/Haise’s as well. So perhaps Mutsuki is supposed to be a reverse Kaneki?

2. Saiko

I couldn’t think of too many things to say about Saiko’s mask aside from the fact it appears to have an 8 like the the Tarot card “Strength” on it.

Reversed:

Weakness

Self-doubt

Lack of self-discipline

Honestly at the moment the second reversed sounds more like Saiko it’s nearly impossible to tell when an 8 is reversed anyway.  But we can hope for the upright meaning. Especially with how in this chapter Saiko showed compassion towards the ghouls she met saying they seemed like good people and control and courage when she came up with a convincing lie to get them to trust her and Shirazu. (Good actor, like Mamman like daughter).

The mask appears to have a kind of mesh in the front which allows Saiko to see out.

3. Shirazu

Shirazu’s is another hard to read mask. the main 2 things I get out of it is that Uta has kept one of his favorite features of Shirazu, his teeth.

Uta actually seems to put at least one thing in each Quinx member’s mask that he talked about them with in conversation. Shirazu: Teeth, Mutsuki: Eyepatch, Urie: “crazy mask”. So maybe we can figure out something about Saiko’s mystery mask from their conversation (perhaps to do with the Koro-pok-guru?).

The only other thing that really come’s to mind other than the fact that Shirazu’sd mask looks like oyasumi punpun’s bird or a madoka villian is that the pointed teeth design, pointed protrusion and blacked out eyes remind me a bit of Itori’s mask.

OR maybe the stretched face from Beetlejuice, Ishida does like his creepy movie references (Jason of the 13th Ward from Friday the 13, and Donato being all Hannibal Lector like).

4. Urie

Urie’s mask is probably one of the most interesting of the Quinx alongside Mutsuki. I’m going to be repeating myself from other posts a lot in this portion.

First of all Urie’s mask resembles the same basic shape of that of Amon’s Arata Kakuja/Quinque armor mask. Which may lead to the idea that Urie’s kakuhou was supplied by Arata (along with other clues I won’t get into here).

Secondly it seems we see another look at Uta’s ironic brilliance in Urie’s mask. Because after he asked Urie if he could make him a “crazy mask”…

Uta creates a mask that looks like a combination of certain crazed Half Kakuja’s masks. 

5. Haise

Haise’s mask is obviously extremely similar to the one he wore as Kaneki Ken, however some minor changes have been made.

The mouth area has become more enclosed with less of the gums showing and the bolts on the side have become smaller and less garish. Possibly to go with Haise’s more gentle outer personality. Also the area around the left eye has been widened to show more of Haise’s face. Perhaps because besides the current operation Kaneki/Haise’s identity has been discovered already and thus he doesn’t need to focus on hiding as much as when he was Kaneki.

Also some of the straps have become simpler and thinner, most noticably with neck piece becoming it’s own strap without the zipper in the front. Though those seem like more practical changes.

In any case it’s wonderful to see Haise in the mask.

re:quest [tension] - chapter 1

I hope everyone’s having a wonderful summer vacation so far (if you’re not on vacation, then I’m sorry). But anyways, every week or so I’ll be posting the translations of the short stories from Tokyo Ghoul:re[quest], the 4th TG light novel. I’ll be starting off with the 1st chapter out of 6 for the short story “tension”, which is about the CCG art festival and features Ui and Hairu, along with the other members of the CCG. I hope you enjoy it!

Why Kaneki/Haise’s hair is red and what it means

SO before I start lot’s of theories are from this video so check them out.

For thirst things first, we probably all thought Kaneki was back when the hair turned “blacked” in chapter 33. But his hair is actually red, probably a very dark blood red. What points toward this theory is one:

this picture were white hair Kaneki and Haise fuse together and you can se blood dripping all over their face, which is what “dies” Haises hair red.

Also a few days before this chapter was released Ishida-sensei posted his poem 

The blood won’t wash away from his hair so this is permanent (for now)

Also there was that panel were Haise was actually asked “Is this blood on your head? Wipe it off”

It musst look really disturbing.

So now that his hair is read what does this mean? First we have to think about what triggered this transformation: Haise and white hair Kaneki were talking, they remembered Kanekis mother, how she really was and they talked about what Kaneki truly wants, which is to die.  BUT they also talk about stop dreaming, meaning waking up! And this is the important thing. All this time since TKG:re started we haven’t seen black hair Kaneki, or what we knew as “original” Kaneki. Now we know his mother was abusive and he idolized her and faked his own memory and became the Kaneki we were introduced to at the very begging.  A weak, shy boy wo doesn’t want to stand out AND doesn’t want to hurt others.

“Better be the one who get hurt, then to hurt others”

Also the youtube I linked at the begging pointed out this

If you flip the image you can not only clearly see Kaneki smiling but his hand touching his chin, and we all know what that means, he is lying or hiding the truth. So I don’t believe that Kaneki his lying in this moment, he doesn’t like the beating or does he lie that he hates his mothers, what I think it is the moment when Kaneki started lying to himself. This is the moment he started to idolized his mother and make up all this good stories about her. Here he becomes the Kaneki we all knew from the beginning. This makes me also wonder about the death of his mother. Did she really die of exhausting or was Kaneki somehow involved in her death? Did he maybe kill her right after this scene?

So this Kaneki was also no the real Kaneki. He also was a fake, probably to protected himself. But this is over now, now we have the real Kaneki, the Kaneki that was hurt by his mother.

this part of the poem is probably about his mother. “Better hurt others, then be the one that get’s hurt”

You can easily flip this quote, which belongs to the red hair Kaneki/Haise whatever now!

So what does this mean? Simple, the nice and warm and caring part that both Kaneki and Haise shared is gone. There are many examples in this chapter like Haise throwing Tsukiyama off the roof. Haise, someone who never even killed a ghoul, pierces Tsukiyama and throws him off the roof, knowing that in his current state this fall will kill him. 

Also his behavior in front of Urie

He literally tells Urie that it is his fault, that Shirazu died. This is something that neither Kaneki and especially not Haise who was like a parent to the Q’s squad would have ever said.

Also this

“In addition,at his own behest, he was relieved of his duties as mentor..:”

He asked for being relieved from this, from his family, from the people who love him. And not because of something nobel, but to protected himself. From what I’m not sure yet. Maybe he also doesn’t care anymore, like his mother.

I don’t know but things are going to get pretty dark (even darken then before how is this possible???) And my heart breaks when I think of what this means for Mutsuki and especially Saiko, who calls Haise Maman?
