Hierapolis – Exploring the Greco-Roman Ruins at Pamukkale
NEW ! Exploring Hierapolis – Greco-Roman Ruins at Pamukkale
Our entrance ticket to the Pamukkale terraces also gives us access to the ancient ruins of Hierapolis  So in effect it’s a double whammy.
History
There’s been a settlement here since 190 BC when Eumenes II founded the city of Hierapolis.   After reading the material at Pamukkale about how many diseases and afflictions the water flowing down the terraces can heal, it’s little wonder that visitors…

The Whirling Dervishes of Turkey - Ceremonies & Practices
NEW! The Whirling Dervishes of Turkey - Ceremonies & Practices
It’s unlike us to put a religious ceremony on a list of things to see, but this is Turkey and this ceremony is the Sema.  It’s the ceremony of the Whirling Dervishes.   The very name indicates mystery and the exotic.  It’s a unique religious experience to Turkey and one we determined to take in while in Istanbul.
What are the Whirling Dervishes?
The Whirling Dervishes originated in Turkey, as an…

Turkish Wine Tasting at Gallipoli National Park
NEW! Turkish Wine Tasting at Gallipoli National Park
While most travellers come to Gallipoli to visit the World War I battlefields and cemeteries, there’s another reason to visit the Peninsula.   Wine.  We found vineyards inside the Gallipoli National Park and a winery standing just outside it, in the town of Eceabat.  We spent a pleasant afternoon at the Suvla Winery, on the outskirts of Eceabat, Turkish wine tasting in Gallipoli.

Gallipoli - Paying Respects at the WWI battlefields
NEW! Gallipoli - Paying Respects at the WWI battlefields
I knew little of the history of Gallipoli until I visited New Zealand and Australia.   That seems unconscionable, now that this is more than a century since the battles of Gallipoli took place.  However, it was a visit to Peter Jackson’s exhibitions at the Te Papa museum in Wellington that led us here.  We followed that up with a trip to the National ANZAC Museum in Albany, Australia.  After…

Overlanding the Silk Road – Istanbul to Kathmandu
NEW! Overlanding the Silk Road – Istanbul to Kathmandu
We’ve spent a week in Istanbul.  It’s a bucket list city, so I’m somewhat surprised it’s taken us this long to get here.  No matter, because now after a week of sating kebab cravings, mosque callings and seeing more tiles than I’ve ever seen in my life we’re leaving.   That’s right, we’re off again.  This time we’re overlanding the Silk Road – heading from Istanbul to Kathmandu.
Where we’ve been…

Get an Express Uzbekistan Visa in Istanbul
NEW! Get an Express Uzbekistan Visa in Istanbul
Getting an Uzbekistan Visa is a notorious time suck, no matter where you apply for it.  Obtaining an Uzbek visa can take 10 days or longer.  The prescribed way to avoid this wait is to obtain a Letter of Invitation (LOI) and then go along to the Uzbekistan Embassy or Consulate of your choice and pick it up in one day.  An LOI costs from around US$70.   The visa itself is another US$70.   We took…

Bansko to Istanbul - Bulgaria to Turkey by Bus
NEW! Bansko to Istanbul - Bulgaria to Turkey by Bus > We're off again!
Bansko to Istanbul is an easy day trip, even if it might be a long day.  The best option we found for a day time trip was to take a bus from Bansko to Plovdiv and then from Plovdiv to Istanbul.  For the next stage of our trip we need to get from Bulgaria to Turkey and in Turkey our first stop is Istanbul.
It was a long day.  We left Bansko at 0650, arrived in Plovdiv in time to catch a bus to…

Matanzas to Havana - taking a colectivo
NEW! Matanzas to Havana - taking a colectivo driven by one legged man
The day after we packed the relatives into a taxi to La Habana airport we decided to head off from Matanzas to Havana.  We left our glorious Casa Particular in Boca La Camaroica.  This was the place where the beach right outside the Casa was almost private.  We shared the relatives taxi as far as Matanzas and checked into a quiet casa run by Luisa Esther.
In our 24 hours in Matanzas, we spotted…
