there were people who were very optimistic. athena used to consider herself one of those people-- always hoping for the best, seeing the best in people, and always having high hopes. but as of late, she didn’t really feel like that anymore. growing more and more pessimistic, she felt like her siblings. she wasn’t nearly as bad, but she could feel herself sinking down to be more like them. “how’s that working out for you?”

athena rolled her eyes as the other spoke some sort of feel-good quote in an obvious sarcastic tone. “yeah, yeah-- why do we all need a savior?” it was a dumb question. if anyone needed a savior, it was athena riddle. but she was currently disgusted with the thought. “why are you giving me a faux pep talk anyways?”

delilah !

delilah wasn’t a monster. her new roommate might think it, eventually, and she’d agree in context– but for the blissful five minutes before either of them knew the truth, she was really trying. when she heard the slight struggle outside the door and the key turn and click in the lock, she stood up from where she’d been sprawled on one of the couches, and moved to help her in– or as the case ended up being, watch as athena pushed through and set some of her things down, and settle for a poorly offered, “i can help.” she could have done any number of things, to do so. caught the door with her foot, so it wouldn’t swing shut on top of her. grab a bag. grab both of them, even, and give her a break. but no– delilah’s ‘help’ came in the form of her reaching for the frame she assumed would be making its way up to athena’s room, eventually. she lifted it, glancing down in only vague interest at the photo behind the glass… and as if she’d received a delayed electrical shock, the picture tumbled from delilah’s hands with a sharp inhale of breath. it landed face up– glass shattered over the blond man’s smiling face– and though she managed tear her eyes away to look athena’s way, her expression remained horrified… and not because of the frame she’d broken. “i’m so sorry. it- i was trying to help, it slipped, i didn’t…- i can get you a new frame.”

it was only seconds after athena turned her back that she heard the shattering of glass. she rushed in and kneeled down, looking at the photograph. it seemed like the girl just couldn’t catch a break. she closed her eyes tightly and let out a deep sigh, picking up the frame. “it’s fine,” she mumbled as she stood up, photograph in hand. she walked to the garbage and quickly took the photograph out, throwing the frame into the garbage. perhaps this was a sign to let go of the past-- of HIM. but she just couldn’t. he made life worth living, and now each day was more and more difficult. there were few things she had left of him, the photo being one of them. she set the photograph back down on the counter and went back out to grab her bags, practically dragging them through the door. “so which room is mine?”

the shape shifter immediately mimicked her, taking a large sip of his drink as he got it. he wasn’t actively trying to get drunk since he knew he had a high tolerance from all the parties he’d been to in his life, two whiskies weren’t going to do a thing but once he started to mix liquors was when the fun started. “ you too. “ he smiled over at her before nodding. “ athena, i like it. “ deshi stated with a mischievous look as his fingertips tapped against the glass of his drink. “ well - i figured we were set up in a bar so we could drink ? “ the tall man offered. “ if anything we can order some nachos or something and if we don’t like each other we can get drunk? unless you want to go to like a fancy dinner ? “ he asked with a raised brow, hoping she wouldn’t say yes to that. deshi wasn’t the fancy dinner type of guy, there were so many expectations when you went on a dinner date which was why he was glad they were paired up in a bar but he wanted to respect her decision if she wanted to have a proper date like most girls did. 

athena gave another smile as the other commented on her name. for someone who hated her name so much, she got that a lot. as soon as he offered a fancy dinner, she shook her head. “i’m perfectly fine here. in fact, that plan sounds fantastic.” if anything, athena was going to need the drinks to get through the night. any thought of love put her in a bad mood and sent her back to last summer. hell, why not relive it for a night ? she pulled the drink back to her lips and finished the thing, placing the glass back down to get refilled. “i can be here all night.”

athena had no clue how she’d accumulated so much stuff. how did she possibly fill up one suitcase and a duffel bag ?? it’s not like she was made of money or had a father who cared enough to send her things. but somehow she managed. the duffel on her shoulder and the suitcase handle in her hand made it difficult to unlock the door. the picture she held close to her wasn’t making it any easier. once she finally got the door open, she moved quickly and placed the photograph face up on the nearest surface and turned back to retrieve her suitcase. before she got back out the door, she made eye contact with her roommate. “oh sorry, i just have so much. had to put that down real quick.”

deshi saw the flash of black hair from the corner of his eye and turned to see if it was who’d been set up with. luckily it was, so he tried to not be an ass and smiled over at her. “ hey, i’m guessing you’re simplicity? “ he asked before he shot down the rest of his whiskey, setting it down so it made a nice sound against the wood of the bar. “ you can call me deshi - can i buy you a drink ? “ the shapeshifter gestured his thumb towards the bar before raising his hand to get the bartenders attention which wasn’t that hard since it wasn’t peak time for the bar really. “ i’ll get another whiskey neat and whatever she wants. “ he stated to the bartender as he shot the girl a quick look, just scoping out what he didn’t want to do blatantly when she walked in. she was pretty at the first glance, those eyes were really piercing and he had to say he liked that -it almost made him want to bring his dragon eyes into this form - to have something in common.

as the other practically slammed his glass down, athena offered a smile. “deshi, it’s nice to meet you.” she pulled out a seat from under the bar and climbed onto it, turning over to the man on the other side of the counter. completely oblivious where the other’s eyes were, she ordered herself one of the beers on tap. beer wasn’t exactly her favorite, but it’d have to do. after turning back, she realized she’d never properly introduced herself. “oh sorry, uh, you can call me athena. because that’s my name,” she added awkwardly. this already wasn’t going well for her. as soon as her beer was placed beside her, she took a large drink. “so, you have any ideas for what we should do tonight ?”

deshi wasn’t really a blind date person especially when it came to the person setting him up being a stranger also but he figured ‘new him, new attitude’ right? he felt lucky to have the arrangement in a pub, he had written his perfect date was over drinks so it only proved whoever did this set up actually read his submission and also if the person ended being a total dud, he could drink to make them interesting. the man was actually a little nervous, he wasn’t a dater nor was he used to not knowing what was around the corner for him so as he sit at the bar in the pub, his nerves were getting to him. deshi had tried to look nice, not dressed up like huge dork would be but he wasn’t wearing any old clothes or things someone could clock for being really out of fashion. of course he had his pop of red, his shoes being a deep blood red to go along with the black his outfit. he nursed his whiskey, his eyes wandering towards the door every once in a while, wondering when the person he’d been set up would walk in. 

athena stood outside the pub, just staring up at the sign. it was barely dark out, who the hell went to a pub that early ? part of her wanted to turn right around and head back to her dorm. she hadn’t really been up for this in the first place. she really only did it for bailey, and really, she would’ve just donated the money if she could have. the only thing stopping her from turning around was the fact that there was someone waiting for her. while she wasn’t exactly up to the idea, she’d be a little hurt if she got stood up. so with a sigh, she reached for the door and walked in, scanning the crowd. her eyes landed on one person-- the only person who could be relatively close to her age. that had to be it. everyone else around here looked like they were five years to retirement. she approached the other slowly, scared to just pop out of the blue. “uh, hey !”

maybe valentine's day and these pair ups will be good for you! they do say putting yourself out there again is the first step in moving on after the end of a relationship and even if you and zephyr never did date it might help!

“maybe. i mean, i’m not really looking for anything. i wasn’t when i first met him. but i guess you’re right– thank you. maybe i’ll make a new friend who can distract me. anything is possible, right ? who am i to ignore an opportunity ?”

“i mean, i’ve got tons. it’s really hard to make a short list. i guess my biggest regret is constantly trying to go back to my father.”

“uh, no we didn’t. i just don’t think we’re meant to.”

“surprisingly i miss carmen and charles. never thought i’d live to see the day i ever said that.”

“throw a party and prepare to see my best friend.”

do you think you'll ever move on from zephyr?

“i mean, it’s a slow process for sure. it’s not something you really get over– i’m sure you can ask anyone in similar situations. everyday is hard. i have nightmares about him all the time. perhaps i should move the photograph near my bed ? i don’t know, life just… isn’t the same without him. but i’m TRYING. i get asked about zephyr so often that i truly don’t believe that i am anything without him. he seems to be the best and most interesting part about me, so maybe i will never move on. how do you move on when a whole piece of you is gone ?”
