A (Happy) Birthday.

Dr. Ratio x Aventurine

A/N: Dearest most amazing @lovelynim, happy happy bdaaaay! It's been AGES since I wrote this pair so apologies in advance if it sucks!

Summary: Domestic birthday fluff. (Also on AO3)

Light tickles on his neck and ear. Urgh. Gentle kisses on his cheek. A tongue against his lips. What the hell?

Dr. Ratio never expected to be woken up like this, at literally five in the morning.

"Wakey wakey, Ratio~ Morning is almost here, and so is my birthday. In fact, it's already here."

Aventurine greedily kissed Ratio's lips some more. Ratio merely groaned and didn't kiss him back.

"Wish me a happy birthday?" Aventurine chirped.

"The only thing I'm wishing you is eternal headache, now go back to sleep."

"So cold. Is that how you speak to your lover?"

"Clearly it is."

When Ratio didn't respond to Aventurine's advances, the annoying gambler indeed went back to sleep.

Ratio was relieved when he was the first to raise later that morning, and he quickly took a shower. However, after he got out and barely got himself dressed, Aventurine already sat at their kitchen table.

"Make me birthday breakfast, and give me a happy birthday kiss?" he asked like an excited little child.

Aventurine's birthday huh.

Ratio knew him long enough to know about his past.

His birthday usually wasn't something they celebrated too extravagantly. After all, it was also the day of the Kakava and an impactful moment in Aventurine's life. They didn't talk a lot about it.

Dr. Ratio would acknowledge Aventurine's birthday casually in the past years, one time giving him a subtle gift and telling him, "I know it's your birthday. Accept this, I hope you will enjoy it," and there were even times when they didn't mention it at all.

Something told him Aventurine was feeling it a little more strongly this time, and he chose to cope by being annoying.

"It's just a normal day like every other day," Ratio reminded him.

"It's also the day when you should wish me a happy birthday," Aventurine said.

Ratio raised an eyebrow. "So it's your birthday. Well, congratulations," he said, and he wanted to continue his way to get dressed since his top half was still naked, but Aventurine caught his hand.

"That wasn't what I wanted to hear. Wish me a happy birthday, why can't you do it?"

"I'm not saying I can't. I won't."

"You're not being kind!"

"And you're not being sincere."

The smugness in Aventurine's smile disappeared. "Not entirely, Ratio. I want it to be a happy birthday. Can't you just indulge me?"

"Why the sudden change? You were never this annoying about birthdays."

"Besides my birthday, this is also our 1500th day together as a couple, you know."

Dr. Ratio's facial expression probably didn't give away how much that surprised him.

Time flies...

"You've been keeping count?" he asked. Aventurine nodded.

"After all, I do treasure my time together with my precious boyfriend. I want my birthdays to be happier too, and only you can help me sweetie~"

Aventurine looked proud, smug, mischievous, but Ratio could see the sensitive man hiding behind those expressions. He sighed.

"Fine, I actually do have a gift for you."

Aventurine perked up when he took his hand and guided him back to bed.

"Oh? Is it that kind of gift? Well, I won't say I'll complain, it's just rather surpris-ahhh!" Aventurine yelped when Ratio threw him on their bed. Climbing after him, Ratio immediately grabbed both of Aventurine's sides and clawed calmly.

"HUwah! Uwahahah! Rahahatio! What- whahahat?!"

"It's my gift. For your happy birthday."

Laughter was a great way to make a birthday happy after all. Aventurine didn't seem to comprehend this yet.

"Ahahahack! That's mehehean- ahahha you trihihicked mehehe!"

"I did not trick you. This is the gift I prepared for your birthday today. Don't tell me you do not like it?" Ratio asked while his fingers continued to dig into Aventurine's sides.

His T-shirt was moving up slightly, so he was eager to move his fingers underneath the fabric so he could tickle his lover's bare sides and ribs.

Aventurine howled and kicked his legs. "AHAHa-Rahahatio! Nahaahaha thihis isn't fahahair!"

Ratio studied his reactions quietly.

Everytime he tickled Aventurine, he thought again: I should do this more often.

It made the usually cocky gambler hmm, how to say it.... cute and helpless, and less annoying, despite the loud voice and wild struggles. He flailed his arms and tried to roll over, but Ratio manhandled him with ease.

When he grabbed one of Aventurine's arms and pinned it above his head so he could tickle his exposed underarm without mercy, his voice started reacing new funny pitches.

"RAHAHATIO! Plehehease aaahahaa!"

His bare feet dug into the bed sheets and he arched his back. Ratio noticed every movement. But he especially noticed the huge laugh on his face and the tears that sparkled in his eyes.

"I cahahahan't- nahahaha!" Aventurine continued to laugh. Ratio's fingers just wouldn't stop. Even when he vaguely thought, 'maybe I'm killing him', he somehow still couldn't control his body well enough to stop.

Until Aventurine weakly caught his arm with his free hand. He looked at him with those sweet, pleading eyes.

"Rahahatio plehehease! I gihiihihive!"

Staring at him, Ratio really realized once again that tickled-to-death Aventurine had to be the best version of him.

"Birthday happy enough yet?" Ratio asked dryly when Aventurine's hand moved towards his hand and intertwined their fingers. Ratio did not protest against the cheesy move.

"The happiest," Aventurine said breathlessly.

"And even happier if you'd dare kiss me right now," he said. Ratio was still pinning Aventurine's arm above his head. His other hand was caught by Aventurine's hand, and he stared down at his smile that was slowly getting back some levels of smugness and arrogance.

"Only this time," Ratio lied, and he leaned in and kissed those damn tasty lips. Aventurine moaned shamelessly and kissed him back with twice the amount of passion and with a lot of tongue.

The kiss was so much work that Ratio would almost forget the thing he had in mind. He pulled his hand free from Aventurine's hand and tickled his armpit and ribs again with quick clawing movements and wiggling fingers.

"HMPHHHahhahaha!" Aventurine laughed fully into Ratio's mouth, and Ratio couldn't help but smirk.

"A happy birthday indeed," he said. His fingers were moving on their own, so while he continued to kiss Aventurine mercilessly, the poor gambler was forced to laugh, giggle and moan tiredly through the entirety of the kiss.

But of course, he was dealing with that pretty well, and Ratio agreed: it wasn't so bad to give his lover some better, lighter birthday memories, and this was actually the perfect start.
