I didnt have very high expectations when I started Nier Automata and I can say it has been one of the most pleasant surprises when it proved me wrong. Also I didn't expect 9S to become on of my faves fron the game, but A2 is my favourite!
Tumblr media
Also bonus sketch of Kaine and Emil! I'm halfway through Nier Replicant and these two are my babies!! I love them so much!!! Also I changed Kaine's outfit because her original one is awful. I really hate her oversexualization...

It never struck me just how anti-war Nier Automata is the first time I played it.
My first impression was that it was about 2B and 9S' relationship, and how the battle they're eternally involved it effects it. But, it really isn't just about them.
It's about the centuries of non stop war they fight against the alien invaders of their planet. It's about how the androids and machines fight for long dead races, dead so long neither side recals a time when they lived. It's about how the Androids and Machines are the same, literally made with the same cores and parts.
It's about propaganda and how the efforts on one side only succeed to bolster the hatred of the other, stokeing the flames of combat on in an eternal cycle of misery and death.
It's about growing up, evolving, and learning how to love in a world raveged by endless fighting. It's about empathy, and choices we make to be kind. It's about misunderstandings and how they harm us. How grief makes us into hateful beings, how it makes us dead in less physical ways, how it makes us abandon all we knew in pursuit of something better than this.
It's not about 2B and 9S. It's about how war shapes them, for better, and for worse. It's about the horror they face in learning all they fought for was a lie. The horror of gaining empathy for the enemy as you kill and slaughter their people. Their children.
It's about what happens when you forget the enemy lives, and feels, and wants and wishes and dreams. It's about what happens when you remember they do.
Topical. Beautiful game, 10/10
