What people who are under felony probation should understand is – your constitutional rights during this period is surrendered. However, the rights you will be enjoying during this period will depend on the type of charge you’re convicted of.
By being under felony probation, a person may be asked to surrender their freedom to travel out of state, the right to own a firearm or ammunitions, the freedom from search and seizure without probable cause and even one’s right to vote.

Things to know before agreeing to felony probation
#1 You still have the chance to go to prison
When you are under probation, chances are, your moves are all calculated. It seems that you will be walking in a tightrope. And sadly, it will take you years to get out of it.
During this time, you may need to meet with your probation officer regularly. Doing otherwise will take you back to custody.
#2 Probationary supervision needs to be paid
But of course, aside from the regular meetings, you may need to pay for your supervision. These amount will depend on the count or state you are in. Once unpaid, it can be imposed as a debt as a civil judgment. Once you are unable to pay, it may be collected as wage garnishment.
#3 You can be subject to probation violation
“You can violate your probation without breaking another law”, says Atty Kia Champion.
For example you fail to pay fines, unable to attend meetings or complete any program then you could be violating your probation.
#4 You’re subject to travel restriction and moving to another state
Under probation, you cannot travel freely or move to another state. His can be changed though once your probation officer sees that you are compliant then you may be allowed given that you will have to contact the officer by phone or video communication.

#5 You’ll be required to apply for a job
Some may require you to find a job. This will be considered in compliance with your probation
#6 You can be search warrantless
Being under probation, thing is, you can be searched without warrant. You should submit to it once you are asked this applies to your home and person. This may include drug testing as well.
#7 Over 18, your probation is a secret
When you are already over 18, your family is not entitled to talk with your probation officer nor discuss anything affiliated to your case.
#8 Restriction on who to associate with is imposed
This is in defense of you contacting gangs especially if you are a former member of it, Atty Kia Champion says.

Rights During probationary period
Although you are under probation, you are still with constitutional rights during this period. Some of your rights may be surrendered but this depends on level and type of charge you are convicted of.
