thinking about miscommunication in isat. bonnie distancing themself from siffrin out of guilt for his eye and siffrin misinterpreting it to mean that bonnie hates them. siffrin dropping the "bonbon" nickname and calling them bonnie instead. odile's dry and sarcastic humor not meshing well with siffrin's tendency to accept everything said about their relationship with the others at face value & without complaint. siffrin's friendly teasing of mirabelle which she actually doesn't enjoy and just tolerates because it's their way of showing friendship. everyone teasing siffrin about his bad memory when it's actually something he's deeply insecure about. everyone assuming that siffrin is touch averse and never asking. ough

As a person with little memories, you often don't... Really realize a lot of things until people point it out or something makes you think about it. Like, let's say, I ride a bike, and people ask, wow, who taught you that?

And then you're like uh. I don't know? I never thought about it?

And THEN you think about it and realize. You don't remember. And that's very unsettling. But hey, it’s okay, it’s just a singular memory. Surely there’s others. Anyway!!!

Or, perhaps, hey did you use to do this when you were 12-15, and you're like UH. I don't know?

Or when you know things but don't know HOW you know them

Siffrin REALLY doesn't think about stuff because he was never given a reason to, it's not even because he's a little shit.

Bringing this post back because I would love to see more people release their own opinions on how Siffrin's eye affects him emotionally and physically out into the world.

there's barely any talk about it outside of how it effects his relationship with Bonnie, which don't get me wrong is great! But there's so much more to losing an eye then just the guilt someone else may feel about it y'know.

Like I know Siffrin was very much brushing the whole thing off and trying very hard to pretend it never happened, but that must have been pretty scary for them at first, suddenly being down half of your sight, probably in pain from the attack, and none of the comfort that a hug might have brought them because the party still thought Sif didn't like being touched. Like the actual event and events after losing the eye must have been genuinely terrible for him and he wouldn't have said a thing about it to anyone because to Siffrin their own personal comfort is completely unnecessary when thinking about how scared Bonnie must have been, how terrifying it must have been for Bonnie, and so forth.

Siffrin would rather pretend it never happened and pretend that it didn't affect him in any significant way than admit that the situation was at the very least uncomfortable for them, like I fully believe him when they say that losing the eye meant nothing to them because otherwise Bonnie would have gotten hurt, but feeling like he made the right call doesn't actually change how it's consequences effected him and the emotions however briefly they got to exist before getting repressed to hell and back they must have felt in the actual moment and direct aftermath were probably pretty intense.

Well would you look at that! Apparently I actually did have more to say about it lol!

I've been seeing some posts about siffrin being bad at his job that got me thinking super hard about it. Like Siffrin IS bad at their job but it's only because he's recently disabled, Like at the point we first meet him he doesn't seem to even fully accept the lost eye as being lost and they haven't adjusted to it being missing and what that really means.

Almost everytime Sif misses something in the house its because they couldn't SEE it, like the switch in the pillar, the key in the head housemaidens office, and i think the most obvious offender the counter.

Honestly the only things I can think of that he misses due to just, not getting it would be the secret library and the key in the diary, which I also find the diary super interesting because I feel it's pretty safe to assume they miss it because of how he values privacy of thought but that's not what this is about.

The point is Siffrin is struggling with his sight and no longer can spot things as easily as he likely is used to, and isn't giving himself any breathing room for messing up because in their mind they should be better at this because at some point not that long ago he WAS better at this, meaning if he failed its got to be his fault, that means he isn't trying as hard as they should or didn't look hard enough, either way it would be because of some kind of failing on their part.

But that isn't true, the issue isn't looking hard enough or trying harder or anything like that, it's because he's partially BLIND and won't ask or talk to the party about it, because as previously established he refuses to acknowledge it affects him and his ability to do their job.

And all of this ties in to their inability to talk about or even think about their feelings. One of the major themes of the game is communication and I think the eye is a pretty great example of Siffrin's general struggle with it and also is just a great view into the way he sees himself in general, which is.... not great lol.

Okay I'm done I have no more rambles, hopefully this was coherent and made sense lol. I have so many thoughts about Siffrin's eye and how that affects him and all that, it's so interesting. Put that creature into he blender to be thoroughly examined lol.

Something that has always felt like an interesting choice to me when reading the island comes back fics is the way it seems like the island coming back fixes all of Siffrin's memory problems, like it's not a bad choice or anything and honestly most of my my favorite isat fics are the ones where the island come back because of just how well written they are. I just honestly believe his memory problems are permanent now

I mean I highly doubt getting brain blasted by the universe everytime you remember something that vaguely reminds you of home would be healthy for your brain, it kinda feels like a scooper yknow like it goes in to get the specific memories but a scooper isn't exactly the most coordinated tool so other things get scraped out along with the target, and causes alot of damage as a result that can't really be fixed.

Now I do fully believe that the island coming back would make it easier for Sif to remember more basic words and things like that since they would have access to his native language again since that is absolutely apart of the problem and he might even have more childhood memories too

But generally speaking I think their memory would still be pretty bad, exhibit (A) being that one event you can get where they forget the names of the party who are all unrelated to the island and shouldn't be getting their names blasted out of Sif's memory, I honestly believe this is a pretty good example of how good Siffrin's general memory unrelated to the island wish craft blasting is actually doing, well I say unrelated more like he's been blasted so many times that it's affecting his actual general memory, which isn't something I think can be fixed by the island coming back.

And I honestly believe this to likely be the case for most of the islanders and anyone else that had a strong connection to it, I don't have much evidence for this specific thought since the only islanders we meet in the game are Sif and the king, and then the daydreaming one outside of them having a strong connection to it, but I believe how often someone gets memory wiped likely plays a pretty significant role to how much it effects their memory.

All that is to say I think it would be super interesting to explore the possibility of Siffrin's memory not getting fixed or really improving in any significant way outside of unlocking a few childhood memories and finally being able to think in their own language again, because imagine the pain of realizing a decent amount of your population has been permanently affected by a bad wish and it can't be undone, the damage happened and they WILL have to live with it for the rest of their lives, will it get any worse now that the island is back? No probably not but the island has been gone for so long that the damage done to these peoples memory likely ranges from moderate to severe and it can't be fixed, it's apart of them now, a lasting affect from the tragedy of losing their home they way they did and for how long it was gone too.

Now applying all of the former to Siffrin and think about how that could be explored as apart of the restoration of the island, how that could affect families finally getting to reunite with their loved ones, Sif's bad memory is one of his biggest insecurities in the game because of how paralyzing the thought of forgetting his loved ones is to them, and I think it would be so interesting to explore in a scenario where the island comes back, they get to relearn the constellations but their memory is still pretty bad and he forgets it all about a month later, that kinda of thing, I just think it'd be a hard hitting point in the lasting effects of what happened, kinda like how the loops will stick with him

And not just him but probably other islanders too.

Jeeezzzz this was a long rant lol, okay I'm done I just really love thinking about Siffrin's memory, and I honestly don't think enough people truly explore it in a more in depth way, because his bad memory is so important for some of his behavior, like their coin, the desperation to be close to the party, the desperation in not wanting to forget but knowing you're going to and how horrifying that can be when it's about people you love. Just thinking about it alot is all.

Guys, I've just thought of something terrible.

So me n @fermented-writers-block are talking about how the stars two concurrent timeloops would work, especially in the context of looping forward.

I was thinking about the base mechanics of looping forward: you can loop forward, but it costs you memories because it goes against the will of the loops (universe).

What if the memory issues surrounding the island are not directly caused by a wish, rather because the memory problems are an indirect result, because remembering subverts the wish, going against the Universes will.

Okay so a thought that has been intriguing me lately is the concept of Siffrin falling for Isabeau DURING the time loops rather than before or after, like I don't think that's actually the case or anything but the thought of how that might effect their dynamic in a relationship is super intriguing to me

Like I know if it were me and I found out my crush fell in love with me during a time loop I'd have some conflicting feelings about it yknow, and it makes me so curious

I fully believe they'd work past it but I also think it'd draw some complicated thoughts about the dynamic of their relationship to Isabeau even if they aren't what I'm thinking exactly.

Idk it's just so interesting to me and I think about it from time to time, how would it effect their relationship? How would it make Isabeau feel about their relationship? How would it make SIF feel about their relationship? It just makes me think

I could of course be over thinking it but it is very interesting to me.

I’ve been seeing the Grian void eye clip everywhere and it’s got me thinking…

What if… the Watchers stole his eyes?

I’m thinking either when he was first turned or after he was fully initiated.

I like the idea that it’s a tradition/ritual meant to sever ties with the mortal world. It’s supposed to keep the person from viewing the world like a mortal and stop the person from making attachments.

It’s also to help strengthen watcher magic because now it’s basically required to see anything. I also like to think that once a user gains enough control over their magic to control their sight it becomes imperceptible to watcher magic detection as it is has become more just subconsciously controlled.

Oh yea and the watcher masks are meant to help aid the transition and learning to use the magic.

Here’s the thing though, using watcher doesn’t make it so that you see like you once did. There’s two types of watcher magic sight one is essentially something like free cam so you can see anywhere anytime (the watching part of the watchers) and while yes it could be used to make sight normal again it takes a lot of focus and energy to do since you have to basically attach the free cam to your face and have it move when you do. Most don’t try to learn to do it because the other type of watcher sight works just fine. The other type doesn’t really let you see normally, it’s more akin to sensing the world around, so you mostly see a black void with every object outlined in purple including people so unless you focus more on a person you don’t see any real defining features unless they move a lot like the mouth and things. So things like scars, genuine emotions, and stuff are near impossible to see without intentionally focusing on seeing the whole person (still can’t see color even if they do this)

The eyes could also kinda be a sign of whether a watcher was forced or not cause there’d be more damage to a forced watcher since they’d probably fight back.

So for Grian, what I have in mind is that on Hermitcraft before word got out that he’s a watcher, he made the void of his eyes look normal through a transformation or illusion spell.

Honestly I have so many ideas on ways this could work for stories and lore and stuff. (So much so that every time I opened this draft to post it I added something more so it took me over a week to post)
