Lady of Thorns

Nobody knew what to call her. Part of it was because she never regarded anyone unless they stepped into the threshold of her garden. Then… they rarely came out, the gardens pristine and so beautiful it was unnatural.  The creatures that lived beyond the Garden called her Lady. Not the Lady, but if anyone asked what she was lady of- “Lady of the Garden,” or “Lady of Thorns” to some. The most beautiful, terrible thing in that garden. Sometimes they could hear her voice through the briars, and they turned far away. Her words had power like none other, when the garden’s roots spread deeper, further than any other. It was only on occasion, when she sat crooning to her garden, promising to adore and nurture it, as long as it loved and protected her. And so it did. It survived winters. Predators. Hunters. “Lady doesn’t even have bones in her garden any longer,” the cardinal whispered to the changeling telling the story. “The roses have all gone and grown.”
